The Video Poker Edge, Second Edition: How to Play Smart and Bet Right, by Linda Boyd

From Publishers Weekly

Former math teacher Boyd's guide to winning bucketfuls of change is not for the casual casino-goer: readers will come across sentences like "the mathematically correct way to play any dealt hand is based on the stated payout table in conjunction with statistical probabilities"; be required to keep straight variances, expected returns and expected values (some are percentages; some are currency equivalents); and learn how to read seemingly cryptic charts before sinking their teeth into the meat of Boyd's strategies. But, for the left-brained set, Boyd's book is a boon: she excels in breaking down which hands to play, which types of video poker games offer better chances of payouts for large and small bankrolls, betting strategies and the different types of casinos and games readers can expect to find across the country. Readers who already know their way around a Harrah's will want to skip the sections dealing with gambling addiction, budgets and casino etiquette and cut to the discreetly pocketable payout charts and the approximately 40 pages Boyd dedicates to strategy. Savvy video poker players could win back the cover price in a night.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

What you will learn from the books and games is that you STILL won't win at Video Poker. BUT, you will probably last longer than if you had played YOUR way. I've played hundreds of this game following THEIR recommended strategy and I keep losing. More slowly than if I had played my way, though. I suppose I should give the book a 5 star rating for saving me all that money I would have lost in the casinos.

I love this book! I wanted to learn how to play Video Poker because I kept reading that playing it is a lot better than playing the slot machines. So I decided to search for a good book on this subject and found this one. It proved to be interesting reading and had some very good information on how to play the game. It also offered good advise on the best Video Poker games to play because of the better pay offs. There is a lot of information on all of the different kinds of Video Poker games in most major casinos. I'm going to Las Vegas next month to try my luck because this books suggests practicing at home before going to a casino and spending money before knowing how to play the game. So I also bought a CD on how to play and I did do a lot of practicing. This book also includes Video Poker strategy cards that can be cut out and taken to the casinos with you which are perfectly legal to use. If you are interested in wanting to learn about Video Poker, I suggest getting this book.

A wealth of knowledge. Not just playing technique, but also technical information. I always suspected that some machines were not random, this book tells you how and where to look to figure out if you are getting a fair game. I also enjoyed the history and etiquette information. It kind of opened my eyes to a whole different side of the gambling world that I did not realize existed. Recommended.

The secret to winning is finding a good machine with high payout. Good luck with that, because the best I've seen these days (2018) is about 91% payback ! Probably in Nevada or A.C. for higher payout than that.

What this book really should say is, "get training software, and you won't need a book."Nonetheless, a good guide to the games and paytables if you are the type who would rather learn by reading than doing.

shipped qwikly and condition as promised- good vid poker over view, things change really fast and percentages by machine are no longer valid

The video poker guide book is a great value, have learned a lot by reading it,up your chances substantially if your a video poker player!!

Great book to explain strategy, what to look for, and has a great cheat sheet.

A New Way to Enjoy Sherlock HolmesIt isn’t mandatory for a book about Sherlock to be a new mystery starring Sherlock. In this clever new series, Gemma Doyle, manager of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, uses Sherlockian logic to figure out a crime scene she reluctantly stumbles into.Gemma has come to West London in Cape Cod for a fresh start after her divorce. She manages the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium for her great uncle, Arthur Doyle, a Sherlock Holmes aficionado. He bought the building for its address: 222 Baker Street. Next door (220 Baker Street), Jayne Wilson, who co-owns Mrs. Hudson’s Tea Room, has become Gemma’s best friend and confidant. The two shops are connected, benefiting both businesses. The story kick-off: While tidying up after twenty-four women on a bridge group holiday sweep in, shop, and leave, Gemma comes across a bag wedged between some books. Inside the bag is what appears to be an original edition of a magazine containing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s first story. If not fake, it could be worth a fortune. Gemma finds a postcard in the bag with the name of the hotel where the magazine’s owner must be staying. After stashing the magazine in her great uncle’s safe at home, she and Jayne set out for the hotel to ask a few questions before returning the magazine. They find a dead body, and the game is afoot. The characters are deftly drawn: Gemma isn’t the Sherlock Holmes fan both her great uncle and Jayne are, but her mind works, ironically, like the Great Detective’s. She can take every little detail and arrive at accurate conclusions in a way that disconcerts local police and even wrecked a fine romance. Jayne is her Doctor Watson, sensible, anchored, and yet secretly thrilling to the adventure Gemma drags her into. Other quirky characters move the plot along: great uncle Arthur who, despite being in his 90s, has wanderlust and is on a trip in this story. The author’s brushstrokes are just enough to make him vivid by his absence. (This reader hopes he pops up again in a future book.) Then there is Ruby, the grumpy clerk at the shop cash register; Irene Talbot, the journalist hungry for a story; two book collectors (one hunky, one boring), who take an interest in the magazine; Detective Louise Estrada, out to pin a murder rap on Gemma; a dysfunctional family of would-be heirs . . . and many minor characters breeze through the pages with life and humor. Gemma, as a matter of fact, has some very funny lines throughout. This is a mystery that is both satisfying in the puzzle sense and disarming to a reader who lies cozy mysteries with endearing sleuths.

For anyone that has more than a passing interest in the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, "Elementary, She Read" is a must read! Gemma Doyle (no relation to Arthur Conan Doyle!) has come to West London (Cape Cod) to manage her Great Uncle Arthur's bookstore - "Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium". Located at 222 Baker Street, of course! I mean - that was one of the selling points when her Great Uncle bought the shop. Uncle Arthur is a great fan of Sherlock Holmes, and Holmes memorabelia. Gemma has added other Sherlockian items besides the books and magazines because, well, because they sell! A cat lover myself, I adore Moriarty, the resident cat. Moriarty loves everyone except Gemma, and her former boyfriend (and current police detective) Ryan.Gemma finds what appears to be a rare magazine containing an original Sherlock Holmes story - placed in amongst her books and magazines by a very strange looking woman, while the shop is filled with a woman's tour group. Emma and her best friend Jayne (who runs the adjoining Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room) set off to return the magazine to the woman who left it in the shop. They find her ... dead in a local hotel. Jayne calls the police, and when they arrive, Gemma is thunderstruck to see that her ex-boyfriend Ryan has returned from Boston, and is lead detective. He is not too friendly, but the other detective, a female detective, is going to present even more problems!A dead woman, her wayward son, a second dead woman, and a boatload of greedy people move this story forward at a very crisp pace. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I think that you will too!

Gemma co-owns, with her Great Uncle Arthur, two businesses. One being a theme retail store that specializes in all things related to the character, Sherlock Holmes. The other business is the "Mrs. Hudson Tea Shop." These two businesses reside in New London, Mass. You can almost guess the addresses. The mystery begins when a woman blends in with a tour group and leaves or hides a famous, or is it?, Magazine featuring Sherlock and said to have been printed in 1887. The value could be almost half a million dollars but if it's a fake... well, no one is going to know for awhile since the woman that left the book is dead and the magazine is now in police evidence protection.Gemma has an unique ability to pay attention to the smallest details. She puts theories together using this ability. The police are not so charmed by Gemma and since the bodies keep being found by her and best friend, Jayne....well, you can see why they must investigate the murders to save themselves.I found myself liking this book very much. I look forward to reading the next volume in the series.

Except for the denouement, which I skipped. Too many mistakes in details that should have been found. It was raining., it wasn’t type of thing. And I always think the Holmes noticing of details and inferences drawn therefrom are silly. She knew he was divorced because he hesitated before saying the word wife. Could just as easily have been because they weren’t married. The fake tension introduced to shore up the story- two people meet...instant dislike. Silly. But good enough that I read it all the way through. So three stars.

I liked this story. Who I thought murdered two people didn't. When I can't figure out who the murderer is, I consider that a good mystery. Gemma and her good friend and partner, Jayne, stumble onto not one but two dead bodies. The police are very suspicious of them both but especially Gemma. Gamma runs the Sherlock Holmes Bookstore and Emporium, and it's seems everyone is after a valuable magazine that was left in her store by one of the victims. A clever plot.

For a first book in the series it was very intriguing. The concept is very good as are the characters. The storyline is worthy and the murderer isn't as easy to figure as you think.

It was terribly poignant to read this old (late 70s) guide to NYC because the World Trade Center and its observatory are prominently described. This is still a helpful book; without it I am not sure I would have included the Morgan library on my to do list for the next time I'm in NY and now it is near the top.

It has amused me for a long time that inhabitants of a particular place often know less of its main attractions than people who come to visit. Helene Hanff and Patsy Gibbs take a job assignment as pretext to change this for themselves in their hometown, New York. As someone who moved to the city a few years ago I found myself laughing and nodding many times. I too have failed to see many of the places Hanff mentioned. I took plenty of notes and will surely visit the sites next week. Promise!

As the years go by, this little gem becomes less of a book for travellers and more of a book for history lovers. It is as much a celebration (or lament) of what-is as an obituary of what-was and the chapter on the World Trade Centre is particularly poignant. Apple of my Eye is also a celebration of friendship and of personalities as distinct as the New York neighbourhoods that contributed to their formation. An enchanting read for friends and lovers of this wonderous city, past and present.

Love Helene Hanff wish I could have met her.

Aficionados of glorious New York City MUST have this book in their library AND/OR give it as a gift. This book along with E.B. White's book of vignettes are a pair!

I love this book the way I love New York City.I foundmyself smiling as I read. This book brought back memoriesof living in Manhattan and showingNew York to visiting friends. It'sa very good weekend read.

A little dated, but still a hysterical book!

This book is a treat. It was written before the world trade center tragedy, but describes so many things that I've been impressed with about New York. There is a lot of amusement and truth on most every page. I'm so glad I found a copy to enjoy. New York is always changing.
