There aren't many Umbria-specific guides out there. This one is strictly 'okay'. It has lovely photos and highlights many of the major towns and sites. That said, it lacks the satisfying walking tours, museum tours, and other historical lessons that characterize the Rick Steve's guides. We mostly read it before our trip and in the hotel room. It didn't seem useful enough to carry with us during the day to make up for its space/weight. Wikipedia had more information about the sites were seeing.Sadly Rick Steves does not have a true Umbria guide, which is unfortunate. His other Italy guides are generally filled with great walking tours, useful restaurant suggestions, and some (occasionally painful) humor.I don't regret the purchase, since it was cheap, but it is one of the lamer travel guides in terms of content -- lovely pictures aside. Other supposed Umbria guides I've seen were just tiny subsections from that same company's "general" Italy guidebooks.
My only complaint is the very small print -- difficult for older eyes to read. Let's face it -- baby boomers are a huge group of travelers and need to have their physical limitations e.g., vision attended to
Eyewitness guides are my go-to for accessible and easy to find information. They are always well organized so that sections are tabbed and easy to find. The pictures, graphics, and maps are very helpful.
Slim lightweight volume to carry. Good succinct info for a 7 day trip I am taking in spring. Good maps with good detail for driving.
Good book for overall info, pictures and to help decide where to visit. Actual travel logistics, hotels, etc a bit light -- but that is what other guide books are for.
The guide provided a nice, concise overview of the region. There were good write-ups on all of the old hilltop towns that we wanted to visit.
