***I won this book via the Goodread Giveaway program. This has not influenced my opinion.***This is a hodgepodge of thoughts, history, feelings, and experiences experienced by the author as he takes a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with his mother and sister. Mr. Russell is a conflicted lapsed Catholic who is also a conflicted lapsed son. His journey helps put everything in focus.I found the writing to be cerebral. The organization was jarring with tidbits from childhood mixed in with history of the sites and present tense observations. Basically, this is a journal.Overall, it was boring and disjunct. I couldn't connect.

Fascinating book. When I first heard this verdict my immediate reaction was that it was an example of money trouncing the 1st ammendment, an outright attack on the media. After reading this I have moderated my position. In the way that British libel laws are too restrictive to free speech, in my opinion, so, too, are unfettered '1st ammendment' exercises in the US too lax. The issue is, however, that libel can be hard to discern from intentional harassment and character assassination.Like pornography though, you know it when you see it. It is more a matter of justice than law.We have been witnessing this phenomena in the last several years with email and apps like twitter: picking on, 'trolling' people while hiding behind an electronic shield. Trump has raised this too a new (lower) level, as we have seen. This book is well worth reading. The plaintiff in the case, a public figure, is not a sympathetic character, nor is the defendent, media gadfly Gawker. The verdict was possible thanks mainly to the millions of dollars supplied by the conspiracy. The justice of that, to me, was that Gawker also had deep pockets, much deeper than the plaintiff. The book draws, sharply, the effect of money on the legal system, and that justice comes, unfortunately, at a price. Money can keep an otherwise just cause or suit from reaching a jury. Illustrates the point, begs for a solutionGood story, well written, fascinating.

When I bought this book I thought it was something completely different, it happens to me to buy books driven just by instinct and the cover, but I liked the surprise even if I wasn't prepared to read something like that. Now, you can like it or not, you can agree with it or not, but it is well written and it put your brain at work, so that I welcome it and I would suggest to read it.

Kent Russell is an incredible author. I enjoyed his first collection (I'm Sorry...) but this single is even better. He has an incredible approach to writing about family and religion, two inherently difficult things to write about because they're so personal and easy to slide into saccharine platitudes or faux objective indifference. It feels like a conversation with a hyper-literate friend.

Being Catholic myself, some parts of the story were quite interesting to me, and I could identify with some of the thoughts and feelings expressed. I didn't care for the manner in which the writer ended the story. It was a quick read so I'm not sorry that I read the book.

I enjoyed the whole book! It is informative, funny, emotional and a lot more. I a not good with words otherwise I can describe it better. I hope this book reaches a lot of cold and fallen away Catholic or anybody who is s searching for the meaning of life and existence.

The book was a little hard to get into. I had thought about not finishing it but decided to go ahead and read to the end. The parts relaying the actual trip was easy to read but the philosophical part were a lot harder. You have to have a good background in religious literature. Many time I wished he would have just put it in “plain” language.

While a good story, the author is a little overboard on his use of rather good obtuse words. No doubt he is very knowledgable and is fairly accurate with bible history. I don't quite understand why he spelled the Christian word for God with a lower case "g". Particularly since he was felt baptized again at the end?? Anyway not a bad read.
