Kindle Scout offerings tend to come in surges: There will be a plethora of vampire tales, then a plague of dystopias, followed by a month in which every third novel is a romance set in Miami or Beverley Hills. One recent surge offered multiple retellings of the Cinderella fairy tale. (I reviewed two others recently, "Isabella and the Slipper" Isabella and the Slipper and "Cinder Unit" Cinder Unit (Duplicate Book 1).) Here's another novel I nominated. Since it was selected, I got to read it for free. The Papadopoulos novel, however, is not presented as a fairy story; the setting is historical medieval France, and (mostly) realistic. Not only that, it weaves other stories like Bluebeard into the narrative.Cinderella and her step-sisters Fredegonde and Javotte are all older girls seeking husbands. In the parlance of the time, they are spinsters, although only Javotte is an actual weaver. The three with their mother Isabelle live on an estate which is soon to pass back to the hands of the local Duke, because non-noble women may not hold lands or other real property in this era. Thus the impetus to marry one of the three daughters to Duke Louis' son.Cinderella is not the innocent betrayed by her evil step-family, nor is she the porcelain beauty of the 1950s portrayed in the Disney film Cinderella. Instead, her loveliness is assessed by the standards of the time: a high, hairless forehead, lashless heavy-lidded eyes, and lips so thin they almost vanish. She connives to attend the Prince's ball separate from her step-family, because she fears their curious appearance will prevent the Prince from appreciating her own beauty.Fredegonde, or "Freddie" as her sisters call her, is actually a beauty of a different, more modern style. Tall, sturdily athletic, with sweeping eyelashes and tawny red hair, she manages her late father's estate, writes, and composes song lyrics. She loves her tiny sister Javotte, even though everyone in the family avoids getting too close to Javotte and her halitosis—something has left the girl with a single tooth and chronic bad breath. Both girls struggle to endure the company of their step-sister Cinderella, whose wit is applied mostly to poke fun at the others' shortcomings and flaws. In the Ducal chateau, meanwhile, the handsome knight Enguerrand teases Prince Louis, naming him "Galant" while subtly discouraging the prince from actually being gallant and valiant. Duke Louis mourns his mysteriously-deceased former wives, and plots to marry again. And Lord Mercier calculates how much he can charge for the wedding gifts, fabrics, and sundries for the upcoming festivities.I loved the clever way the "fairy godmother" was handled. You finish the story wondering, was there any magic involved at all? Because there certainly was something magical in the not-quite-happily-ever-after ending that managed to stay true to the original tale...Then danced past it just enough to keep it real!

Picture the classic Cinderella re-imagined in medieval France. Either one of her stepsisters or her stepmother must marry within the month or be homeless, as women not of the nobility cannot own property. The eldest stepsister Fredegonde, tall, homely, and redhaired, aims high for the duke himself. Her sister, Javotte, with bad breath and a single tooth, is a hopeless romantic in love with love. Cinderella, not quite as pure and sweet as in the original tale, is determined to one-up her stepsisters in the marriage market. Fredegonde and Cinderella jockey shamelessly for a good share of the book, neither of them coming off as especially likable. Your typical fairy tale this isn't. But it all ends well, more or less, although not for everyone. And the villain does get his just desserts.I would have scored this higher, but this really bore very little resemblance to the original tale. I understand the right of an author to take liberties, but Cinderella's personality was often as petty as Fredemonde's and Javotte was actually very sweet. And Isabel, the stepmother, wasn't at all evil. She was just sort of neutral. It was disorienting.I voted for this through Kindle Scout and was given a copy as a thank you after it won.

I loved this book. I never would have thought to tell the story of Cinderella this way. The step sisters are the protagonists and while Cinderella isn't quite the villain she certainly isn't so sweet and innocent as she is usually portrayed. Freddie longs to be independent and to take care of her family even giving up on the idea of love if it means securing her and her families future. Jovette is sweet and hopelessly romantic and has a talent for making tapestries. While the sisters are not considered beautiful by those around them they each have so much more to offer and with the help of their fairy godmother they are given some well help to be seen as more than their faults. This tale follows the journey of three sisters finding themselves and what it means to find love and to appreciate family. I wish another book would come out because I sincerely want to find out if there is any way for Freddie to get her happily ever after.Thank you to the kindle scout program for selecting this book to get published and giving supporters a free copy.

It sits on my desk within arms reach. I will never start to write unless I know it is near by.And I use it often. One huge mistake writers make is, using the same words too often. After a bit readers will notice certain words popping up over and over. When that happens those particular words begin to stand out like a lighthousebeacon in a storm.Soon readers will start to count them in their subconscious. Not something you as a writer want to have happen. This thesaurus will make sure you won't take your readers down that boring street..

I bought three thesauri at the same time. I do quite a bit of technical writing and I needed multiple sources to draw from.I ordered this title, along with Webster's New World Roget's A-Z Thesaurus, and Roget's International Thesaurus. The first synonym I needed was for "coordinate," as in "to coordinate..." Roget's 21st Century gave me 23 words and phrases, Websters gave only seven, and Roget's eight. I've found similar disparities among the volumes for numerous other words.Roget's 21st Century is a terrific little book, inexpensive, small, and easily stays beside my PC. The others, well, I wish I'd saved my money. But they'll come in handy at some point, I'm sure.

Should fiction writers use Roget's Thesaurus? I've read and heard arguments on both sides. Those who say "No" think that writers using It write overblown prose, using a long word where a shorter one would be better.I disagree. There are times when the first word that comes to mind is the easy word that does not get at the real meaning of a character's thought, or the feeling I want to convey. If I just write, "the room was cold," I've shortchanged the reader. How cold and why does the temperature matter? But if I show that people wear two pairs of thick wool socks just to sit inside, or get up three times in the night to make sure the baby's bed cap is on his head, or have another character remark that the mercury has frozen in the thermometer, the reader feels the cold. This thesaurus is not only a word-finder that lets me locate synonyms to vary my writing vocabulary, it jogs my brain into new was of thinking about what I'm writing. This book lies on my desk waiting to help me write better. It must work, because I've won one Spur Award and been a finalist for another.

This thesaurus is the best I've ever found, and the first one I've purchased in 25 years, since I bought my copy of Roget's. The editor has produced an exhaustive list of categories, which no other thesaurus has, that I've seen. However, I bought this hardbound after I bought the paperback. I thought the hardcover version would be larger and easier to read. Not so. The hardbound is the same dimensions and the same 6 - 7 pt print size as the paperback. I recommend the hardbound, though, because it's surdier and will last longer than the paperback. Either way, it's fine work!

It is a thick paperback and is what it is. But the paper is rough and the print is TINY to get it all in. So if you are young and have great eyes, it won't bother you.

This is by far the best Thesaurus there is; I got it in the nice thumb-indexed hard-cover version, but for the office, I also procured me the paperback version (without thumb index). If you want to browse a bit, hopping from word to word to simply expand your vocab, if you want to find synonyms and antonyms or just words from a certain field of knowledge that need not be a direct paraphrase for another word you have in your mind, this is perfect for you. I got me a used version for a very reasonable price, whose dust jacket arrived in a slightly tattered state here (well, it was a used book after all), but the book itself was in mint condition and its contents are unbeatable anyway. Full score for the book and a compliment to the dealer for serving me swiftly, uncomplicatedly and unexpensively.

The font is REALLY small, so if you're an older person (like me), be prepared to use your magnifying glass or reading glasses. But, other than that, it's a great book. I use it nearly everyday.

I think Roget's is the best thesaurus out there, but HOLY COW! THIS version is ridiculous!! I practically need a microscope to read it! Seriously, the print is smaller than the words on those little pamphlets in OTC meds! The font is smaller than 8. Again, I think Roget's is the best, but I can't use this at all! I wish I hadn't wasted my money.

What a waste of time. By the time I was 25% of the way through this book I was debating whether I’d bother finishing it. I skipped over much of it just to reach the ending. The book had the potential of being a good read but the main character, a Private Investigator named Jessie, doesn’t have the brains to run a business. In that type of job, who on earth would take on an assistant who was a schizophrenic that refused to follow orders? The assistant, who was on a stakeout for several days, drove her own car every day, and parked it close to the house she was observing, which in itself, is stupid. What made it even more ridiculous, her car was a Tesla, a car that would really stand out.Would you really allow your niece who lives with you, to spend time with your assistant once you found out your assistant allowed your niece to drive that car without a permit? Come on, get real! There were so many ridiculous actions taken by Jessie that it’s hard to imagine she hasn’t been killed a hundred times over. Unfortunately, she lives on to star in another book. I don’t care what happens to her. I won’t be reading about her again. Much better books out there.

This is the second book in the Jessie Cole series, taking up three months after the events in book one HER LAST DAY.Private investigator Jessie Cole and amnesiac journalist Ben Morrison continue working together in this offering. There's a devastated father trying to get a huge pharmaceutical company to pay attention to his demands after his beloved daughter dies, a kidnapped baby that's been missing for seven years, Jessie has her niece helping in her office along with a young woman first introduced in the first book, and Ben has Jessie looking into his past.I enjoyed the first book but liked this one even more - more info on the characters and lots of action.I'm now off to read book three DERANGED. I recommend this series if you like psychological thrillers.

After I read the first book, I drew some parallels to the Lizzy Gardner series, hoping that more time spent with these characters would make them shine on their own. And they did.As with the first book, there are several storylines going on at once. The main one is about a man who lost his daughter to a medical condition where the insurance company wouldn't pay for experimental drugs. He decides to take revenge on the CEO of the company. The killer was a horrible man, yet I felt some sympathy. Some of the conversations he had with Emily (the CEO's daughter who he kidnapped) were touching. Emily went back and forth between empathy and anger, just like me.Zee (the schizophrenic kidnapping victim from the first book) is back, working part time with Jessie, and I was so happy to see her character return. She gives the story some levity, as well as being a hero in her own right. She has her own method of doing things, which seems to involve chaos.Jessie is also investigating a cold case about a newborn who was kidnapped from the hospital. Though it's been seven years, the mother isn't giving up. That storyline was a bit crazy! My favorite parts of the book involved Ben, the reporter who helped Jessie find out what happened to her sister in the first book. Ben is starting to have memory flashes of his life before the accident, and they are...disturbing. He hires Jessie to really dig into his past, and I think he and Jessie should both be fearful of what she finds. Ben's story will continue into the next book. I'm not sure how I feel about him, is he a good guy or not? There was again not much of Colin, Jessie's sort-of boyfriend, I hope he gets a little more page time in the next book. Can't wait for the next installment!

*** 4.5 stars ***I have to say that after reading the first book I was a little worried that these characters would not develop into something more and I have to say I’m pleasantly thrilled that they did. This book was entertaining and held my attention. There are a few different story lines but they were written in a way that there was no confusion. However I would like to see less story lines and more focus on one with a subcategory. I would also have liked a more in depth and intense plot. I guess I’m just spoiled due to the fact I have read the entire Lizzy Garner series. I am having a hard time warming up to Jessie but its happening. Slowly but at least there has been progress. I would like to see more of Colin in the next book. Get somethings from his perspective. More with him and Jessie. And Ben. Dear God Ben. I hope he doesn’t turn out to be a serial killer. I love Ben and would be devastated if he in fact ends up being a monster. Please TR Ragan don’t turn him into Dexter. I have all kinds of theories about his past and I hope it doesn’t end up how it looks like its going to be.I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next book. Its going to be a looong wait. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it. I have a feeling that we’ve just touched on the tip of this story!!!

Why do some writers think that ending a pretty good story with a cliffhanger is the way to go? Hoping that you will buy the book that tells you what happened to the character in the book that you read months ago? It is a complete turn off to me and I hope this particular writer doesn't make a habit of it.

I started reading T.R. Ragan in the Lizzy Gardner series. I read the series and came across her Jessie Cole series. Just as I enjoyed the Lizzy Gardner series I've enjoyed the Jessie Cole series as Well. The characters and the story relate to real life. Having to juggle a job, life's daily demands and personal doubts. The book was a page turner, suspenseful and me craving to want more.

This book was very well written and the mystery of it just keeps you intrigued. I have enjoyed many books written by T.R. Reagan. She is a great writer. She knows how to hold your attention to the story. It makes you not want to put the book down. Thanks for being so good at what you do. I enjoyed this book so much. June P.

Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life

From Publishers Weekly

After two stirring memoirs, Senator McCain turns in a slim meditation on the nature of courage. Suggesting the definition of courage has been stretched thin in contemporary parlance, where it can be applied to acts as insignificant as cutting or not cutting one's hair, McCain seeks to return to the word's fundamental meaning not just of "the capacity for action despite our fears" but self-sacrifice for the benefit of others as well as for oneself. Although he addresses valorous conduct by American soldiers in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he is, as always, modestly self-critical of his own experiences in Vietnam (although he and his fellow POWs turned to one another for moral support on a daily basis, he confesses, "I was not always a match for my enemies"). In an especially moving chapter, he recounts the participation of his congressional colleague John Lewis in the nonviolent wing of the Civil Rights movement. Other sections discuss the Navajo leaders Manuelito and Barboncito, Jewish freedom fighter Hannah Senesh and Burmese dissident (and Nobel Peace Prize recipient) Aung San Suu Kyi. These compelling life stories stand up against the best passages of McCain's previous works. Alas, his writing becomes more vague and less interesting when he shifts to a more abstract discussion of the need for courage in the post–September 11 era. One of McCain's greatest strengths as a writer has been that he doesn't sound like just another politician, and while the drop-off in quality here isn't significant, it is noticeable.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–Senator McCain approaches the investigation of courage from a position of unease at how diluted a commodity it has become in our society, and at how shallowly the label is applied. In offering anecdotes of individuals whose actions embody the rarity of true courage, his well-drawn examples range from Navajo leaders to Colorado River explorers to Jewish freedom fighter Hannah Seneshand Burmese dissident and Nobel Peace Prize-recipient Aung San Suu Kyi. He reflects on the wellsprings of courage, defining it as conscious self-sacrifice "for the sake of others or to uphold a virtue," encompassing actions that may be spurred by honor, outrage, a sense of duty, one's conscience, or moral obligation. He is self-critical and careful to avoid personal aggrandizement, but coaches readers to believe that one can use "fear [as] the opportunity for courage," and, by tackling modest daily challenges, increase the probability of summoning deeper reserves when needed. The book is not a primer but is, rather, a declaration of why striving for courage is fundamentally important as an attribute of character. The anecdotes are the most crisply written portions; the text becomes less taut and more hazy when addressing abstractions such as the qualities and types of courage, but focus and momentum are usually restored, often by a signature McCain sound bite.–Lynn Nutwell, Fairfax City Regional Library, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Sen McCain clearly makes the case of why we all need to be courageous when the opportunity falls on us. He very well makes the argument that Courage is not an end goal, but rather the result of the way we lead our lives. To be Courageous, we need to morally clear in the daily choices we make that we put us in a position to show courage when the need arises. The book is filled with excellent examples of people who responded to the call to be courageous.

Well-written and provocative...it was a very good read, and I am glad to have the insight into McCain's feelings on this subject (even if I am angry with him these days). It arrived quickly & in brand new condition.

I'm a big fan of Sen. McCain for his courageous service to our country, he doesn't mention his bravery, even down plays it. Discusses others and there virtues and unselfishness to step up for a cause, at the risk of losing there own lives. I related it to 9/11, as did he. Those we wouldn't expect to be hero "material" can bee a surprise to us all. Not always centered around war. Quick read and worth the time.

So well thought out and well written. McCain is, as always, honest and upfront. He is unrelenting in his determination to define courage as something way more than mere endurance in the face of adversity.

John McCain uses the stories of several obviously heroic individuals to analyze courage; what it is and isn’t, why it is important, and why we should strive to have some by overcoming fear in our everyday adventures.

It's written from a true prospective as from one that has been there and has first hand knowledge of the brutal account. We learn from those that have lived through this horrific times. One one that has been there can actually tell the truth.

We no longer teach civics in public high school. We don't study and honor those who possessed great courage. Immigrants prepping for naturalization learn more than the average student. If every public school student were required to read about heroes like John McCain, we would be a stronger nation. Without history and courage, Big Brother can make what we value thought crime.

I will read this book many more times. As are all the books I have read by Senator McCain, this book is very well-written. His definition of courage had me re-examining my thoughts on courage. Senator McCain gets to the very essence of human nature, motivation, selflessness, and the impact of such qualities on human behavior. He paints an amazing picture of what it is to embody courage, even when you may not realize you are courageous. Many times this book brought me to tears, but that is a good thing! As I said, I will read this book many more times.

Review

"Dayal’s knack for a riveting, conscientious narrative – combined with a lifelong knowledge of the scene and a rare level of trust from all involved – leaves behind the sensationalism and various agendas so many authors and documentary makers have brought to bear on black metal, and treats it instead as the still vibrant and turbulent artform all genuine fans will recognise first and foremost, while still providing revelatory insights for fans both old and new." -Metal Hammer"Anyone who has picked up any UK metal mags over the past few years would recognise Dayal’s writing. And anyone who has ran into him at a gig over the past few years will recognise the burden of putting together a phone-book sized history of a metal subgenre that has thrived on half-truths, legend and scandal. Said burden could have―should have turned Dayal all shades of Senator Palpatine, but it looks like it has gone to press just in time." - Decibel Magazine"Offering an unparalleled level of detail, and spanning 600 pages, ‘Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult’ captures the progress of one of metal’s most dangerous and exciting genres." -Terrorizer"Author Patterson has pulled off the remarkable trick of covering 30 years' worth of extreme heavy metal, from its garage beginnings to the murderous second wave and finally to the disparate chaos of today. To his credit, Patterson doesn't repeat other book's mistakes by focussing solely on the Oslo scene of the early 90s, though those events (murders, church-burnings and grave desecrations) get their own in-depth chapters. His book adds plenty of previously unread interviews with the main culprits, leading to new perspectives on the original shortlist of innovators (Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer) as much as the modern and frankly confusing wave of bands. It's easy to recommend this book: it's the most ambitious work on black metal so far attempted." - Joel McIver, Record Collector MagazineUnlike other books and documentaries on the subject, Patterson approaches the genre from an insider’s perspective, providing an exciting account of nearly 30 years’ worth of black metal history, two decades of which he found himself firmly rooted; a purposeful tome meant to enrich, enlighten and “examine the artistic, musical, and spiritual development of the genre and the creative work, ideologies and often colourful lives of some of its most significant bands. - Zero Tolerance MagazineWith the arrival of British music writer Dayal Patterson’s excellent book, we have a collection of the best journalism and photo archival work of the lot. It completes the “unholy trinity” of BM books. It is an extremely diligent and well-informed publication that leaves almost nothing out of the history of the genre, containing many previously unreported facts and stories. This is no lazy collection of old interviews thrown together in haste. What I love about Dayal's book is the wide range he covers in this book. It seems like every book or documentary on black metal focuses on Burzum, Mayhem, and Varg Vikernes vs. Euronymous. Dayal touches on this briefly, but more as a side note. It's very refreshing to read a black metal book that starts with the guys who started it all: Mercyful Fate, Venom, Celtic Frost, etc. and how it progressed into what it is today. Dayal's look at modern bands of all subgenres of black metal really put this book over the top and make it the best black metal book out there. Lords of Chaos for years have set the standard, but that book was last revised in 2003, so there is a whole decade of black metal culture and goings on to report on, especially with the thousand different directions black metal has gone since then. Dayal really nailed it with this book and Feral House will continue to be my favorite publisher. Dayal puts every major (and minor) black metal and props for mentioning bands like Ulver, Samael, old Cradle of Filth, Beherit, Fleurety, Dodecahedron, Vlad Tepes, and especially Marduk. Marduk is my all time favorite band and get overlooked constantly, so it is nice to see some representation here. ANother great aspect of this book is the breakdown of scenes from various countries from around the world and the introduction to many of us such great bands like VON, which I had heard the name, but had to check out on Youtube, and am now depressed on missing out on those guys back in the day. This book is not just the best music book I have read this year (honorable mention: Al Jourgensen), but probably the best book of any kind period I have read in 2013. Props to Dayal Patterson and Feral House. This book is an encyclopedia and worth the money.

Evolution of the Cult is a fantastic guide to a massive amount of disparate, intimidating, and often indispensable extreme music. Order this and then get on YouTube to pull up album after album so you can follow the contents jam-by-jam. It's a great, well-written, and clear-eyed tome, and I can think of no better book to grab if you're looking to head out on a hell-cruise into the heart of the black metal underground. This is the best book on black metal music I've come across, both in terms of length AND depth.Make no mistake; this is not a jaundiced hit piece like the execrable Lords of Chaos. It's about the music first and foremost... and that's why it's so good. How often do you read about the odd group that is Master's Hammer, or about the struggles of a beleaguered post-brains-and-stabbings Mayhem struggling to find their way again before putting out the much-underrated Wolf's Liar Abyss?Exactly! And that's why you should order this thing yesterday.

After reading "Lords of Chaos," I was left with the impression that Black Metal was defined solely by Varg Vikernes' criminal racist battiness and the genre extended no further the bounds of Scandanavia. How wrong I was! "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" unveiled a world of black metal spanning as Canada (Blasphemy), Romania (Master's Hammer) and Italy (Aborym). I acquired many of these albums since reading "Evolution of the Cult" and eagerly delved into the realms created by these acts. I highly recommend this book for those who have listened to Darkthrone's "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" for the 5000th time and are hungry for more!

Great foray into BM. Much *much* better than Lords of Chaos. Gives a pretty good overview of the most important bands and takes a neutral stance on controversial issues, both within the BM scene and pop culture. I read this book with YouTube pulled up and just listened to album after album that the author goes through. As long as the book is, its only a start, as the author acknowledges. I hope to see more from the author in the future.

The absolute best book about black metal that you will find. It is informative, proveds readers with plenty of new old bands to check out, and doesn't spend the entire book focusing on the Mayhem suicide and murder. Dayal Patterson is the authority on black metal thanks to this book.

It contains the history of Black Metal the past and present including plenty of pictures and interviews so very informative for beginners plus it is not one sided to the events that occured and made it what it has become.

Great book! It's well researched and well written, with a clear and engaging writing style. The author covers in depth the sound and style of the music, as well as its development over time. He also covers the history of the participants, with fascinating interviews and historical perspective. This book also alerted me to some bands I hadn't heard before, and I've enjoyed tracking down their cds and checking them out.I appreciate the author's well informed, thoughtful, and objective attitude towards the black metal "scene." He neither condemns nor glorifies the violence associated with the scene, but rather does an admirable job of listening to the participants' explanations for what happened. In addition to writing about the music and the people who make the music, the author goes a step further, by placing both in a historical and artistic context. A great read, and a great resource!

This book can be accurately described as a thorough history of black metal and its evolution through the years into different forms and sub genres. It is very detailed and in depth and comes from the artists themselves, not from some outsider looking in who might make a biased opinion.
