Pretty good read. I'm not much of a history buff but had always been curious to learn more detail about the old west and how the history of conflict with the natives unfolded. I'm glad I started with this - it was fascinating to read a famous warrior's story in (pretty much) his own words. It was interesting to read Geronimo's descriptions of native traditions including rich creation stories, festivals and rites of passage, and battle and raiding. Geronimo himself attests to things like how warriors were not obliged with any moral boundaries toward anyone outside their own tribe, tribes they have close relations with, or others who've managed to reach a friendly understanding with their tribe. (So raiding and marauding white pioneers on the plains at random was not taboo.) It kind of reminded me of (what little I know about) the ancient European tribal systems such as the Vikings and the Goths. It was also interesting to learn about their justice system, in which warriors who can't/won't follow the unwritten order of things in a tribe are kicked out, then often band together as outcasts. It was to these outlaws he attributed atrocities such as live scalpings and torturing captives for kicks. Assuming he was telling the truth that would explain a lot about possible precipitous misunderstandings between the tribes and the US government regarding native-white relations on the plains and how they affected the course of US history. It's a pretty quick read; I definitely recommend it.

Portions of this story were apparently edited by the person to whom they were told, and other portions are labeled as being his own unedited version, particularly parts that were highly critical of high ranking military personnel. But I expect that this is mostly so that the person recording Geronimo's story would not get in trouble for the criticisms Geronimo made of officers who made treaties with the Apaches that were not completely kept in most cases by the people who were responsible for protecting and supplying the Apache people who agreed to the treaties, and in a few cases the outright treachery where leaders who surrendered were killed and occasionally whole groups that surrendered were slaughtered.Very believable account overall of escalating violence as interaction between first Apache and Mexicans increased, while originally there was little contact with "whites" North of the Mexican border. Later the same pattern repeated north of the Mexican border. Finally Geronimo tried to arrange a treaty with General Miles that he believed would be kept well enough that his people could live adequately protected under it and that the United States would do at least most of what they had promised. This treaty was not fully kept in Geronimo's opinion, but his own people fared better under it than many other Native Americans, so to that extent it was successful.President Theodore Roosevelt had to order that Geronimo was allowed to tell his story in his own words and his white friend was allowed to write it down and publish it, and even then certain bits critical of the United States were apparently edited out, and other parts that are critical of the United States are identified as being Geronimo's personal opinion and not necessarily accurate.Still, we are very lucky to have this much information of these events from this point of view.Recommend this book to anyone interested in American History, and to many readers who just like a good story.

A better title might be "Geronimo: In his own words". I am giving 4 stars because of the poor quality of the transcription, not the content of the story. While the observations and disclaimers of the narrator irritated me at times, they served as a reminder of the culture of the times. My father was born in 1912, not far from Fort Sill. I grew up in Arizona in the '50's hearing about Geronimo and his exploits from family friends who had lived on the Apache reservation. This was the first time I understood the chronology of many of these events. It appears to me that there is enough blame to go around. It would be a good thing if the true story of Geronimo was more widely taught and appreciated. Personally, I think he might have been flattered to think that his name is invoked when paratroopers bail out of an airplane, and stealth operations are planned.

The author is a gifted communicator.In addition to sharing the scientific research (in a non-boring way), I love how the author included examples from real people that explained how these principles helped them. Practical ideas that ANYONE can do...and that EVERYONE should do.

Ive never been and probably will never be a book enthusiast. Especially as a busy adult, i only read books with the value i want to learn in my life. This book was recommended and i made time to read it everyday because heres the shocker, i actually genuinely wanted to. It was easy to read, no the vocab but the font, the page space, and its point made the read enjoyable and applicable and definitely shed value to learn this mental state of really how to maximize your life be how to be truly, yourself at its..comfort. Youll get what i mean. It totally makes sense and im glad this book was taught me and gave me a new perspective to never forget.

I bought the book based on a segment I saw about the author on my favorite TV show, CBS Sunday Morning. I also saw the author's TED talk and found that interesting. The book I must admit, I found a bit disappointing. It seemed as though 90+% of the book was devoted to substantiating the science behind Ms. Cuddy's work but less than 10% on how to actually apply it. Overall, the book left me with the feeling of, 'is this all there is?'

I know Amy Cuddy's original research on changing body language to change your chemistry has been brought into question but I'm a believer. I've seen and experienced firsthand the benefits of power posing, positive mental attitude and reframing emotions (nervousness to excitement). I believe enough that not only did I buy the book, I bought a copy for a coworker who I'm coaching in the area of public speaking. She read it and had many take away ideas to improve her presence. I recommend the book for individuals who haven't yet focused on how they can improve their presence whether for public speaking or just around the office.

One of the most important books I've ever read. Any Cuddy is a remarkable author and researcher who has opened a world of insights in this powerful book. I've just finished my first reading, and instead of beginning the next book on my list, I'm going to read this one again. Highly recommended!!!!

I came late to Amy Cuddy's TED Talk, only having seen it about six months ago, but eagerly pre-ordered this book since I was intrigued by the ideas from Dr. Cuddy's research. While I'm glad I read _Presence_ and did pick up some interesting information, it felt as if the main principles -- standing in power poses to achieve confidence -- were already covered in her talk.The first 2/3 of the book is mostly a recount of research studies that show how the body can change our mindset. The studies that Dr. Cuddy cites were interesting and I liked reading them, but the nitty-gritty of how to implement these changes in your life were really only apparent in the two chapters before the final one (which just included stories/emails of people who had changed their lives based on seeing Dr. Cuddy's TED Talk).I had been hoping that this book would go into more depth about how to implement the poses. While interesting to read, if you've seen the TED Talk, this book won't offer much new information about how to power pose.

I 'm usually a big fan of lonely planet's travel guides but this one was more a source of annoyance than of help. I have to say that I bought the Kindle version, which probably made things worse.We spent most of the time in Northern Thailand and the coverage for that area was extremely spotty. Yes, the guide covers the tourist magnets but when you venture just a little bit outside (and not far) there is very little information. Chiang Mai is covered well, but the way this chapter is structured makes it a major pain on a Kindle. All information is listed by geographical sections of Chiang Mai, and it was really difficult to navigate the information on the Kindle because you always only see one page. I had to endlessly scroll back and forth to see in which section I am.Another issue was that the cities, towns and points of interest were often spelled differently in the guide than they are spelled on the official street signs or popular maps (sometimes Lonely Planet uses a completely different name, that maybe is theoretically correct but is completely useless in practice when nobody else uses that name). As others have pointed out, this book is way too big for the average tourist. It also, strangely, lacks many pictures. If you're going for under a few weeks and want to hit lots of the big sites, go with the Lonely Planet Discover Thailand (Travel Guide) instead. It'll save your back not to have to lug around the bigger book. You can then look online for more off-the-beaten-path ideas. If you're thinking of moving to Thailand, this seems a great resource.

I spent 5 weeks in Thailand in 2010 and my lonely planet guide made the difference between a good trip and a great trip! I felt like I had an insiders view into local culture. I'm planning my return trip, and it has been really cool to see the updates for places I traveled to nearly nine years ago (they also seem to be consistent with website updates for some of my most memorable adventures). This book is great for both the budget and no-expense-spared traveler as it will let you in on the local secrets!

This was a NECESSITY on my trip to Thailand. I read the entire thing over on my plane ride there and felt SUPER informed, 10x more informed than I already was from searching through thousands of search engines before my trip. There are so many recommendations of places to go and things to see. Also, many off the beaten path places to visit. I would totally recommend getting this if you are planing to visit Thailand. It will definitely come in handy, especially when you don't have cell service and need a good old fashioned book / pull out map to help you out.

Who wants to carry a guidebook that weighs as much as a phone book on their month-long trip to Thailand? Not me. Sent it back when I saw the guide's size (and weight).

This book is so helpful, especially when traveling to remote areas, like Thailand, where you may not have wifi or cell service. It has all the highlights you need. I just wish it had more color imagery to get you more excited about some of the places.

Definitely a big book, but with lots of information and maps included. Even with the internet I love traveling with a guide book!

This is a math text with the primary goal of teaching students the mathematical concepts necessary for other courses dealing with finance, insurance, and investments. It presents the basic core of mathematics needed to understand the impact of interest on the world of investments, real estate, corporate planning, insurance, and securities transactions. The value of a good foundation in the mathematical principles of finance and interest becomes apparent if you peruse the mathematics found in an investment or financial management text. Basic ideas like the present value of an annuity, the net present value, the internal rate of return, and discounted cash flows are often burdened with cumbersome notation and messy formulas. The novice learner with no previous experience often finds these to be difficult and perplexing. This text has avoided the tedious arithmetic and transcription of data from finance tables by requiring the use of financial calculators. We emphasize the use of technology with preprogrammed features, but in the advanced sections we also encourage students to program their calculators. We feel this exercise will give them an understanding of the formulas and how their financial calculators perform the various computations. Because this is a problem-solving course, students will have to demonstrate an understanding that goes beyond the numbers spit out by a calculator. This understanding comes from recognizing and diagramming the structure of the problem so that the application of a formula is natural and not just an educated guess. Our goal is for students to understand well those few underlying principles that play out in nearly every finance and interest problem. After years of experience teaching this subject, we have developed certain simplifying techniques that have helped many students to have a successful experience in their studies of finance and interest. One of the most interesting principles involving the numbering of payments we have named the Fence Post Principle. This tricky little idea shows up in all walks of life, but especially in business matters. We have also found that the use of the effective interest rate makes calculations involving general case annuities just another annuity calculation without the frustrations inherent in the equivalent payment method. Students are often frustrated trying to decide whether an exercise requires present value or future value, so we teach them how to recognize certain scenarios and clue words that simplify the decision process. Most of our students reach the point at which they always get the present value/future value issue correct. This text is intended to open the door of financial understanding to many other academic majors besides business, accounting, and the actuarial sciences. Over the years we have received considerable feedback from former students who have expressed appreciation for how this course prepared them for dealing with personal financial matters and investments. Although there are many exercises dealing with business and finance, there are many others that deal with practical issues and the profound effect of interest on the value of money. In fact, the time value of money is the basic principle underlying everything we do in finance. Those who grasp the significance of this principle are not surprised when confronted with a situation where $100 cash can actually be a larger piece of money than, say, $108 located a year from now. To emphasize this principle, we have coined a phrase called the Golden Rule of Finance: Monies cannot be added or reconciled unless they are valued at the same point in time. This concept drives the development of formulas and equations of value so pieces of money can be moved both forward and backward on the time line. Once the student understands where on the time line he or she wants the money, it is an easy matter to pick the right mathematical tool to get it there. We have tried to personalize the exercises by using first names of individuals as the players in the finance problems to be solved. Most of the names of companies used are fictitious, with a few exceptions. Using the names of real companies can lead to misunderstandings if the data are not factually representative of the financial status of those companies. All problems (even a few with names of real companies) have been made up to serve the same function as any other laboratory learning situation. They are as realistic as possible, but your day-to-day financial dealings will of course be somewhat different. Interest rates are always in a state of flux, so rates in problems and examples that seem a little high for today's market may be too low in a year or two. In the summer of 2003 the prime rate had dropped to 4.00%, an impossibly low figure from the perspective of the mid-1990s, when it hovered around 8% to 9%. Backing up another decade to the 1980s, you find that the prime rate was generally above 9%. Adaptability of the Text We envision that this text can be adapted for use at three different levels. They could be identified as sophomore, junior, and senior; but basic, intermediate, and advanced give a better picture. The basic level would serve as a first course aimed at an audience that certainly includes, besides others, finance, management, and accounting majors. The intermediate level would provide a good background and introduction for those headed toward the actuary and insurance professions as well as financial management. The advanced level provides the additional opportunity to apply stochastic processes to finance and interest theory. Basic Level For those who wish to cover this material at a sophomore level in a business or accounting program, the theory sections can be omitted without loss. For this use the authors presuppose a working knowledge of only basic algebra, arithmetic, and percents, but nothing more than what would be covered in a couple of years of high school math. Content: Cover Chapters 1 through 8, but omit the theory sections 1.10, 2.6, 3.3, 3.8, 3.9, and 5.7. This level should concentrate on the Concept and Calculation sections of the exercise sets. Intermediate Level Those using this text at the intermediate level would need at least an introductory-level calculus background that covered differentiation and integration along with limits and summation notation. Content: Cover the basic material in Chapters 1 and 2 in about three class periods, cover all of Chapters 3 through 8, and four sections of Chapter 9. Give special attention to the theory sections 1.10, 2.6, 3.3, 3.8, 3.9, 5.7, 9.1-9.4. These theory of interest sections are very important to those headed toward the actuary field. Programmable calculators should be used for the Chapter 9 material. This level should plan to do a representative amount of the Concept and Calculation exercises but should do all of the Theory and Extension exercises. Advanced Level Those at the advanced level should not only have a Calculus prerequisite but a mathematics statistics class with adequate experience with the normal distribution from an applied as well as a theoretical standpoint. This material will assume the student can handle expected value, variance, covariance, and the lognormal distribution. Content: Cover the same material as the intermediate level with only 1 or 2 class periods on the basic material of Chapters 1 and 2, plus all of Sections 9.5-9.9. This level should plan to do a limited amount of the Concept and Calculation exercises, all of the Theory and Extension exercises, and all of the exercises in Chapter 9. Notation There is a fair amount of diversity of notation among finance, investment, and actuary work. Our goal in choosing notation was two fold: (1) Keep it as simple as possible for the student learning this material, and (2) use dual notation where possible to make future transitions to other texts as smooth as possible. We have used all the basic interest theory notation that is familiar to those in the actuarial field but have tried to use more user-friendly notation in areas where the very compact methods of notation are easily forgotten with disuse. As an example of this, in Chapter 9 we use a notation for present value of a variable payment annuity with arithmetic difference. The nice feature of the user-friendly notation is that those teaching actuarial science students can use the SOA notation with our text with little or no difficulty. To the Student The style, presentation, and features of this text are presented with the student in mind. You should have a sense that you are sitting in our class as we make every effort to help you grasp the concepts. After we introduce and explain new concepts and principles, we try to have several relevant examples to reinforce and clarify those principles. Your goal in the study of the mathematics of finance and interest should be to gain a solid understanding of the few, but important, concepts presented in this text. When you understand what a formula does, it will be easy to remember. It will be a tool in your hand, not a burden on your back. In fact, there are not very many formulas, and what there are have been presented so they are not a mystery. Even within the theory sections every effort has been made to simplify and focus on the key elements. You will be using a financial calculator to perform all the tedious tasks like multiplying two ten-digit numbers, but punching buttons to get the correct answer is far less important than the underlying concepts. Plan to make extensive use of time lines to organize and visualize the exercises. A good time line often makes the needed steps and choice of a formula jump right out of the given information. You should carefully study the examples in the text and even work them out on your own. But if you merely use the examples as templates for working the exercises, you may find yourself deficient in the ability to reason out test questions that ire slightly different. Strive for understanding. Some words of caution and direction are in order about exercise sets. The exercises are divided into three types: concept and short answer exercises; calculation exercises; and theory and extension. As a further student help, Appendix D contains a complete worked-out key for all of the concept and short answer exercises, for the odd-numbered calculation exercises, and for theory and extension exercises. Such a key is a valuable aid to learning, but it can also be the road to ruin if you believe that copying the key is doing the homework. Each section's homework remains incomplete until you understand and are comfortable with the concepts in that section.

I like this book. Gives a good overview of the areas where interest rates are useful for our everyday lives. Requires no high-level quantitative skills to digest the contents of the book except for high school Algebra and some conceptual understanding of basic Calculus. Would recommend this to someone who wants to get a reader-friendy yet rigorous book on the application for interest rates.

This is the fourth streetwise map we've purchased! Easy to carry easy to read. Best Street map in our 24 years of buying travel maps.

The map is devoid of useful reference points or detail of the cities. The roads and cities are there in monochrome. but the Umbrian borders and landmarks are hard for the eye to locate. I am traveling to Umbria this month and I'll take another more useful map, probably the Michelin, not streetwise. I have purchased other, more useful, Streetwise products in the past, but this one is a waste of $.

This map of Umbria will be pretty worthless if you are planning a driving trip there. it is divided right down the middle of Umbria on two sides so you keep having to flip it back and forth to get a sense of the geography - and many of the lovely smaller roads are omitted. Get a detailed map from the Touring Club or Michelin instead. it also lacks detail insets for the key towns you will want to visit. bought this and found it so useless, we left it behind.

Map was not detailed enough to use on my driving trip thru Umbria. Also map on 2sides making it difficult to follow when driving.

This is a lousy map. It's totally worthless as a driving guide. Dont waste your money on it. Their city maps are great. Not this one
