great novel, wonderful, true life story

I was absolutely absorbed by this book. I looked forward to every time I picked it up to read. I must start by saying that I am Jewish and absolutely do NOT share the religious views of Corrie Ten Boom. But, this story is so engrossing and moving that my religious views were irrelevant. This is the remarkable story of a remarkable family that literally laid their lives out to save Jews in Holland during WWII. These are people I wish I could hug. Don't be put off by the religious views expressed. Those views caused heroic people to show mercy and empathy in the most brutal period in recent history. The views were not preachy. I only wish that I could do something good for any person that would give respect for the wonderful people in this story.

Nothing in the description informs the reader that this is an abridged version. Many key parts have been cut and section edited and changed so that they read dramatically differently. I ended having to re-buy the other version (the 35th anniversary one) so I could have the entire book.

I have read this book probably 6 times over the course of my life. You think I’d be tired of it by now. Not only do I love reading it and getting something new from it each time, I make sure I have a copy on hand to give out to others. Yes, it is that good. It is a true story of a tragic time in the history of mankind. It details the love, warmth and courage of a family of three; an elderly father and his two spinster daughters who risk everything to save their Jewish neighbors and strangers alike from the Nazi death camps. Read this book! You will not regret it!

Where to begin when it comes to "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom? I sit here at a loss for words because I know that nothing I can say will begin to display the emotions and thoughts swirling around in my mind. Ms. Boom's story touched a piece of me so deeply, I'm afraid that I will never be the same now. Seeing what she saw, hearing what she heard, things such as these will forever be with me.There are so many things that I have learned when it comes to this story, I would like to state just a few of them here below- not enough to give anything in this story away, but enough to draw you in so that you will want to read what this marvelous woman has to say."There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still." -Casper ten Boom passed on by Corrie."'But,' she said, 'this is what the past is for! Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives is the perfect preparation for a future that only He can see.'" -Corrie ten Boom"'There is sin in this world, and death and loss are consequences of that sin. But you know what? God feels it too. Every tear we cry? God sheds it too. He hurts with us because He loves us.' Her voice grew soft. 'I felt Him, Trent. When I was all alone, my shoulders shaking from grief, I felt His arms wrap around me and His peace embrace me, and I knew. I wasn't alone, He was with me.'" -Corrie ten BoomI cannot began to express to each of you enough the need to read this book at least once in your life time. Please, I promise you, you will not be the same after. You will laugh with Corrie, cry with Corrie, cry out with Corrie in the pain she had to endure, but most importantly God will touch your heart with the miracles He provided her with through all of this. Just take a chance, go back into history a little ways with Ms. Boom, you won't be disappointed.

Whether you are Jew, Christian, Catholic or pagan, this book of history is enlightening for your journey. There are spiritual mentions that shouldn't keep you from reading this book. Just as you would sit respectfully in front of an aunt at a Holiday feast listening politely to a tale, so shall you listen to this one in all its entirety. Every story should be heard. Tin Boom's story holds your attention from concert to cover, bringing you along as if you feel sorrow and joy along side. Encourage others to read it like I was encouraged to read it. Pass history on so that love is spread no matter what religion you are.

It's taken me 6 decades to finally get around to reading Corrie ten Boom's remarkable story. I'm in awe at Corrie's honesty in her weakness, but more in the faith in both Corrie and her sister,Betsy, that sustained them through atrocities I can only imagine....A faith that even enabled them to find joy in fleas! Reading this story has certainly put my own difficulties into perspective and has inspired me to look so much more closely at my own faith. I am truly grateful that I have been so blessed, but I know now that I have to trust God more in every aspect of my life. Thank you, Corrie ten Boom, for sharing your story and for sharing the love of God with a very dark world.

Riveting true story of occupied Holland during WWII. Could not put down, though I knew the unspeakable would occur. A good reminder for today of how fascism starts: First the "state" controls the media and commerce, then bullying comes, with rationing, brutality, curfews, disappearances, genocide. But the hatred, oppression and unspeakable crimes against humanity did not stop the love and good works of this extremely talented, intelligent and faithful family. Their love, their story, and the Resistance, has survived. With many family photos that remind one of one's own relatives only a generation or so ago, and make the story unquestionably come to life. An excellent, excellent read for lovers or history, mystery, or human drama.

For several years, my wife kept trying to convince me to read The Hiding Place. But I thought it sounded like a little child's book. So I kept putting it off. Boy, was I wrong! What an awesome story. I'd give it more than two thumbs up, but I only have 2 thumbs! Well worth taking the time to read, ponder, and absorb how an unseen power guides our lives far more than we realize. Thank you, Corrie Ten Boom, for sharing your experiences with us.

Very useful book. Very ilustrative.

This book gives a complete encyclapedic dictionary of common "dancer" injuries and how to remedy them. It has proved to be a very helpful reference book for me on a daily basis. #43,347 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

My heart sank when Kindle advised an estimated reading time of 11.5 hours! I think a good 75 percent of the book was about covering many miles by “sledge” and shooting caribou. Yet somehow I plodded along tho I will admit to flipping through some pages unread. The book was written in 1913 and I kept wondering how this same book would be written now with our technology and modern “things.”I’m amazed at how detailed the narrative was. Traveling hundreds of miles in snow and bitter cold he recorded many activities. The snow houses were interesting. Of similar shape to what we used to call igloos though not made of blocks of ice, they apparently provided a good deal of warmth. Yet the “prestige” of living in a traditional “white man’s above ground house” means they lack the natural insulation and require imported coal or other heating fuel. All that whale etc meat and blubber was not exactly appetizing. I can’t imagine a diet without fruits and veggies.Of particular interest was his meeting the so-called Blond Eskimos. They certainly DID look different from the other eskimos photographed. The book is peppered with lots of photos, which greatly enhanced the text. They were grainy but good when I enlarged on my iPad. Despite the warning that the modern re-publication of the book resulted in formatting errors, I found very few in the Kindle edition. Not annoying at all. While searching on the internet for a map, I came across a 2014 article (that emphasizes Inuit diet and ketosis etc) that was far from complimentary: It states “Ah yes, Vilhjálmur Stefansson—easily one of the least capable Arctic explorers and well known for stretching the truth. One of Stefansson’s early claims to fame was his supposed sightings of “Blond Eskimos” in Western Nunavut—a claim that was later debunked by DNA testing.” And:“Yes, “read Stefansson” if you want a Disneyland portrayal of the Inuit that isn’t supported by scientific observations and appeals to Westerners. Stefansson’s cooked and Westernized version of the Inuit’s diet became the cornerstone of future ketogenic diets—every single one pointing back to Stefansson as if he was a reputable source.”“Editor’s note: Tim “Tatertot” Steele, who lives in North Pole, Alaska, tells me that the natives uniformly regard Stefansson as a liar...]”Even more disconcerting was a very negative quote from Stefansson’s expedition partner (Dr. Anderson) but I couldn’t locate it for this review so am assuming it was in another article. The article referenced another book available on Amazon: Ada Blackjack: A True Story of Survival in the Arctic by Jennifer Niven. In a review that appeared in Booklist: “Vilhjalmur Steffanson, the scientist whose carelessness was largely responsible for the ill-fated voyage of the Karluk, once again embarks on a haphazard mission.”Disheartened, I continued but skipped over quite a bit. At the end of the book are many pages of sightings of animals, birds, insects, and vegetation which may be of interest to naturalists.Googling his name will reveal additional info.My own negative feelings toward missionaries who trade goods from “civilized” (tongue in cheek) society in exchange for religious brainwashing and “salvation” arose many times. The whole “thou shalt not work on the Sabbath” belief was so ingrained that several times theconverted refused to go and rescue people on a Sunday. Preying on the minds and souls of people who don’t understand many western concepts is particularly abhorrent. As a gal who always needs to know where the bathroom is, I was disappointed at the lack of details about the personal customs of the eskimos. Did they have a toilet area inside their snow houses? How do you go potty with all those heavy animal skin clothes? Is privacy while “going “ or having sex an issue? At what age do they become sexually active? What are their rites in this regard? And, lastly, I was hoping he would touch on something I read in a “white man living with eskimos” book many years ago. This author said they had a “my wife is your wife” attitude. Where is Margaret Mead when you need her?

One of the few great men of the Arctic! His time less account's have been proven over and over and observations have been guide book for many who followed. I read the book 50 years ago as a young survival instructor in Alaska.I spent time northern Canada, Barter Island, Pt. Barrow and inland villages. My time with the Eskimos are a highlight of my life. At 82 I shall not get back but the memories live on!

Really interesting read. This is a story of a people who spend most of their time looking for food. Never really thought about it before but they have no good way of preserving large amounts of food. They do smoke some but most of the time they are out on the hunt with maybe a couple of days worth of food for backup. The do cache some supplies but no guarantee someone else won't eat it. They cut and ate meat off the same washed up whale carcass for two years Makes our lives look pretty easy in comparison. In addition, you realize just how tough and hardy these people are. They walk everywhere and one guy walked 150 miles ... to pick up the mail and a few supplies. Even though there seemed to be a lot of game - they were normally successful - a military group starved to death because they did not know how to hunt.

This book was different from I expected it would make a good reference reading for a student in the study of the natural world of this region.I expected it to be his daily life with the Eskimo people.

I found the book very interesting. It clearly describes the brutal conditions the author was required to live in during his archeological studies of the Eskimo. It is obvious that he had to depend upon the Eskimo for his survival and the success of his mission. I wished that he would have given a better picture of the Eskimo culture . Over all I found it and very good read.

2nd reading - I liked it both times. His later books are trashj moeller

Some educational information with too many irrelevant details that make the book essentially obsolete. Books by Richard K. Nelson are significantly better with first hand experiences and observations, especially on sea ice and hunting.

Very informative book. Great history of exploration in the Artic at the turn of the century.

Amazon.com Review

While this might sound like a cookbook, it's actually a travelogue focusing on the foods of various regions in France. Instead of providing information on what visitors should see during their travels, Waverly Root reveals what they should eat. Root, who made his living as a foreign correspondent and has written several volumes on his penchant for food, is an excellent guide whose descriptions will convince globetrotters that there's much more to travel than sightseeing. The book, along with Root's The Food of Italy won the 1990 James Beard Cookbook Award.

I'm not one to write a review as I am happy with the reviews others submit and those reviews lead me to make the right choices……so what I have to say is redundant. However, I have to tell all readers that love France (not only its food), but everything about France, that this book will educate you about France's history and its relationship to its cuisine. I read it slowly so as to absorb the richness of a well written book. I've been visiting France, for over 20 years and so much of what I have learned by its residents now makes more sense; there are reasons they think the way they do about the food…..and are more than eager to talk about it in detail. You won't be sorry you spent time reading "The Food of France".

For this "foodie" (sorry for the term) who cooks and spends as much time as I can in France, this is the shorthand equivalent of "Larousse Gastronomique." Sure, it's dated, but it's accurate as far as it goes, and very well written, by an opinionated authority with a sense of humor. It describes French culinary classics in the context of their country's history, dividing the country into its general regions of "buttter, oil, and lard." the book is probably not for the beginning cook or traveler, but it suggests specialties to seek out wherever you might find yourself in France. Along with almost everything written on its subject in the 20th century (note, for instance MFK Fisher), it bemoans industrialization, tourist-driven erosion of food quality (and fast food was not even on the French horizon!), and the loss of highly local specialties. All true, but if you're interested in food and stay away from tourist centers, you can still find utterly delicious local specialties in France, from pastries, bread, and cheese at local markets to full meals off the main squares. We'll buy the Kindle version for our next trip.

Root was very much ahead of his time in recognizing and describing regional Italian food. Yet the writing style is certainly like a travelogue: driving north on X highway, on the east the soil changes from alluvial to heavy clay at marker 67 etc.I wish he had included recipes for some of the lesser known dishes he describes as many seem to have faded from current cookbooks.

I moved to Europe in the late 70s when Waverly Root still wrote on food, culture and life-in-general for the International Herald Tribune. At that time he was already advanced in age and had in fact invested much of the 20th century learning what makes the French who they are. This book represents a bit of the old way of perceiving France as the leading culinary and viticultural thought-leader of its time (a vision which persisted into the Kennedy years, but not far beyond). A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, and nouvelle cuisine and nouveau monde wines have changed the way sophisticated people think about food and drink.Nonetheless, the book -- the details, the imagery, the culinary analysis, the richness of the language, the enthusiasm -- remains an extraordinary vital resource on French cuisine. Whether you are an expert on France, or merely curious, Root gives you the lowdown on what grows where, how it is transformed into food, and what local people might drink with it. All within the rich context of French history and geography.Breathtakingly clear, Root divides Gaul into three parts: those that cook with butter, those that cook with olive oil, and those who cook with lard and goose fat. It is a simple and coherent framework which allows the reader to immediately comprehend the inherent differences in regional cuisines. In short, even if you know French food well, you will certainly find something insightful and amusing in this book.

This is by far the best book I have ever read on France and what makes it such a unique and beautiful country. Yes, it was written a good time ago, but unlike America history is something to cherish and is very present in France. Mr. Root captures the pure essence of France through it's food. I would strongly encourage anyone traveling to France or returning from a trip to read The Food of France. As a food writer from a day when writers told stories Mr. Root takes you into each of the regions of France provides you with tidbits of unknown and known history and the food that was shaped by it. Mr. Root knew his food very well and enjoyed it in a way that many would only hope to, a true pleasure in gastronomic reading.

The topic, broadly, is the relationship of cuisine to its Terroir. the text is incredibly engrossing and informative. This author's place in history and time -- an American, writing in the 1950's about knowledge acquired between WWI and WWII, combined with his writing talents, make this book indispensable to both the traveler and the chef. What an insight into what makes the French so... well, French. Root famously divides France into three geogra-culinary categories: those who cook with lard, those who cook with oil, and those who cook with butter. Helpful Maps, good index make it an excellent guidebook. I am so proud to have a good used hardcover of this book in my Library.

The quality of printing of this book are horrendous: the pages are double-printed, making them blurry and hard to read. I returned the first one I purchased and asked for a replacement, which was similarly defective. Now when I try to return this second defective book my account shows $0.00 to be credited to my account! Amazon fail. I’ll go to Barnes and Noble to get a copy of this book while I fight with Amazon for a proper refund.

The Battle of Arnhem: The Deadliest Airborne Operation of World War II, by Antony Beevor

Review

"Beevor conveys a clear sense of what was happening in each fight and the knock-on consequences for the others. What’s more, the compressed time scale and limited strategic scope of Market Garden ideally suit the author’s testimony-rich approach . . . Mr. Beevor is a highly accomplished architect of what the American literary scholar Samuel Hynes calls 'battlefield gothic': the nightmarish horrors and absurdities of combat which themselves become a badge of authenticity for war stories . . .  no one could be better placed to explore these topics.”—The Wall Street Journal“[The Battle of Arnhem] is destined to be a World War II military history classic . . . Excellent maps make the action easy to follow, and the author’s clear, quick prose makes for fascinating, informative reading. . . Beevor’s superb latest offering, in keeping with his established record of excellence, is a must-read for the general military history enthusiast and the WWII history expert.”—Publishers Weekly (starred)“The Battle of Arnhem brings a wealth of new detail to a major World War II disaster . . . Beevor brings to the familiar story a vast amount of research in German, British, American, Polish, and Dutch archives. As usual, his narrative bristles with specifics, including countless observations gleaned from eyewitnesses to every stage of Market Garden. Devoted readers of military history will enjoy the wealth of details."—Christian Science Monitor“In this new volume, Sir Antony Beevor takes a fresh look at this battle first popularized by Cornelius Ryan’s landmark A Bridge Too Far . . . Sir Antony describes the unfolding of the battle in marvelous detail with numerous recollections from both Allied and German participants. One aspect of the battle he covers much better than older narratives is the heavy fighting beyond the Arnhem bridge, the usual focus of Market-Garden histories.”—New York Journal of BooksPraise for Ardennes 1944“One of the finest narrative military historians now writing . . . What makes Ardennes 1944 so effective . . . is not just the vividness of the prose, the clarity of the author’s presentation of tactical events or his skill at evoking through description and careful quotation the look and even smell of the battlefield. Beevor also does a brilliant job of weaving together the grand operational and the tactical narratives, showing how the decisions of generals do, or do not, shape circumstances on the ground.” —The New York Times Book Review “A panoramic and intricately detailed account.” —USA Today “[A] searing account . . . A salutary reminder of that thin veneer detected by Freud between the civilized and the primitive in each of us. Ardennes 1944 ought to prompt some careful reflection on our modern age.” —The Wall Street Journal “[Beevor] has become one of the most respected, as well as globally popular, chroniclers of the struggle . . . Beevor’s books have hitherto gained less celebrity and sales success in the US than they deserve, but Ardennes 1944 may be the one to change that.” —New York Review of Books “Award-winning military historian Beevor examines the Battle of the Bulge in-depth . . . The result is a panoramic and remarkably frank treatment of the German attack, ordered by Hitler as a last-ditch attempt to reverse the momentum of battle in Western Europe. . . . Beevor skewers the pretensions and weaknesses of generals and details atrocities and mistreatment of both civilians and surrendering enemies by both sides. . . . [T]his is a treasure of memorable portraits, striking details, fascinating revelations, and broad insights—likely to be the definitive account of the battle for years to come. Essential reading for anyone interested in World War II.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review) “Even readers well-versed on the war in Europe will welcome this book. It is exhaustively researched and full of fresh insights and thoughtful explanations. Those who want to understand how the attack unfolded and why it failed will not find a more valuable addition to the literature on World War II.” —The Christian Science Monitor “Beevor (The Second World War; D-Day), who has won numerous awards for his works, demonstrates here why he is a celebrated historian and writer. Ardennes 1944, or ‘The Battle of the Bulge,’ is squarely focused on this critical World War II battle spanning August 1944 to April 1945. The author tracks troop movements and positioning throughout the long conflict, while accounting for decisions made on the field, in the war room, and all the way up the chain of command to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower. The writing is both intense and gripping . . . a wonderful read.” —Library Journal “Beevor paints a searing portrait of a world weary of war . . . Beevor’s battle descriptions crackle with you-were-there authenticity.” —The Boston Globe “To write the history of war is above all to tell its story. No one tells it better than Antony Beevor. He combines wide-ranging archival research, published sources, personal accounts, and firsthand knowledge of the terrain. He moves easily among discussions of policy and strategy, the personalities and interactions of commanders, and the viewpoints and standpoints of the people at the sharp end—not only those in the tanks and the foxholes but the civilians caught in the mesh of modern war. And Ardennes 1944 is arguably his best book to date.” —MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History “Beevor has the art of preserving the individual perspective on the battlefield while placing it among the perspectives of platoon, regiment, division, commanders, politicians and civilians . . . Beevor cares about the soldiers and the truth, an old-fashioned set of concerns that is balanced with modern literary skill. This book clarifies, without simplifying, the human experiences and political stakes of the battle for the Ardennes, bringing realism to the battlefield and coherence to the larger history of the war.” —Timothy Snyder, The Guardian    “Indispensible[LG1] .” —David Aaronovitch, The Times   “Ardennes 1944 is a book that plays very much to Beevor’s strengths, combining the view from the top with the view from below and vividly portraying the dark realities of military combat. . . . Beevor has delivered another perfectly judged episode of the second world war, a worthy companion to the works that made his name. Yet again, he has shown that he has the gift of alchemy.” —Roger Moorhouse, The Financial Times “What builds up is an exemplary picture of the misery and horror of this most appalling conflict, in which more than a million men fought in conditions comparable to those on the Eastern Front.” —Clare Mulley, The Australian   “No one has recounted it better than Beevor. His gripping, beautifully written narrative moves seamlessly from the generals’ command posts to the privates in their snow-covered foxholes, and confirms him as the finest chronicler of war in the business.” —Saul David, The Observer   “Beevor weaves a brilliant narrative out of all this drama. As in his previous books, his gifts are strongest in focusing on telling details from different perspectives. . . . a vital historical insight.” —Mark Urban, The Sunday Times   “The best military prose of our era.” —El País, Spain “If there’s one thing that sets Beevor apart from other historians—beyond his gifts as a storyteller— it’s because he is not afraid to look at the most uncomfortable, even frightening subjects, but does so in a way that does not threaten the reader. There’s rarely a judgmental note to his writing. It’s like having Virgil there to lead you through the underworld: he doesn’t leave you stranded amid the horror, but leads you back out again, a wiser person for having undergone the journey.” —Keith Lowe, The Daily Telegraph “The Master of War . . . The Ardennes is the latest of Beevor’s books on the campaigns of the Second World War. It is a superb addition to the canon which has taken us from Stalingrad to Normandy in 1944 and the final gruesome battle for Berlin, not forgetting the masterly single-volume history of the entire war. It is written with all of Beevor’s customary verve and elegance. His remarkable and trademark ability is to encompass the wide sweep of campaigns yet never forget the piquant details of what happened to the individual . . . He focuses brilliantly on the key moments that turned the battle.” —Robert Fox, London Evening Standard   “Beevor is as good on the rows behind the front lines as he is on the battles themselves . . . A sweeping, sobering read, written with all the confidence and aplomb that Beevor fans expect.” —Marcus Tanner, The Independent

This is the single most exhaustive and best description of Operation Market Garden ever written. Written with the benefits of an exhaustive research of the British, American, Dutch and German records, the book provides amazing detail to "The Bridge Too Far" in Arnhem, Nethlerlands. The whole plan suffered from the plain fact that it relied on a single road of attack by the British XXX Corps where going off the road was a near impossibility due to the wet, boggy polders, obvious to anyone who has spent any time in The Netherlands (they rarely use fences in pastures as a dug ditch will quickly fill with water creating a natural barrier). The failure to listen to Dutch military personnel about the geographical defeat of the plan was just another in a string of Montgomery ego led disasters. The utter evil -- absolutely barbaric and shocking to the conscious -- actions of the Nazi SS, the German commanders in The Netherlands, the Dutch SS and the average German soldier are properly detailed and the Dutch people would rightly demand a fuller accounting of the barbarous actions during those months. The author thoroughly explores the lack of planning by Montgomery and Browning, the willful self delusion of Montgomery borne from an ego that held little regard for the futility and needless death of British and American troops. Reluctantly and very mistakenly Eisenhower put American Divisions under the command of the British General Montgomery in what turned out to be the greatest loss of any American Airborne Division -- before or since. Montgomery should be a national disgrace to the British, that is clear. Eisenhower began acting as a politician in deferring to Monty's superhuman ego, and abdicated his role as general commanding in a war. The greatest suffering was then endured by the Dutch people. Epic in its tragedy. A lesson in failed leadership by the British and American commanding generals. A shock and outrage to the conscious in the inhumanity and pure evil of the German army. A story that needs to be retold -- and very well done. I would agree with the criticism that the battle maps were not helpful and could have been done better.

This is, without question, the absolute worst nightmare rendition of of World war two history ever submitted for either cogent research, or, descriptive prose. This book is the absolute nadir of describing any history of battle ever written. I read every page of the disorganized drivel I just paid for, with hopes the author would eventually attempt to clairify the reality of this great engagement. Sure, the author must have undertaken a Herculean effort to pile in disconnected prose, historical sequencing and sheer avoidance of cartographic references... But to what cause? Absolute obfuscation.References to battlefield charts are unfathomable. Don't waste a penny of your money, or, a minute of your time. It's simply an awful disservice to a heroic loss

The author always manages to take us inside the minds of the privates and the generals. His research is impeccable... especially the pain and suffering among the Dutch People. An amazing book!!

In mid-September 1944, the Allies launched a bold plan in hopes of ending the war in Europe by Christmas. Utilizing both airborne and land forces, the plan was to capture the bridges over the Rhine and then sweep directly into Germany. The plan was bold, but in the end, it proved to be foolhardy, for the Germans had several divisions in the area. To make matters worse, the British XXX corps never completed their objective; to relieve the paratroopers who jumped into Arnhem. Dysfunction was the rule of the day, and eventually, the Allies were forced to cut their losses and get out while they still could."The Battle of Arnhem" is a very good book about one of the classic Allied blunders of the war. Author Antony Beevor has written a compelling narrative about the plans and execution of the battle, from the Allied blunders to the German triumph. He also describes the terrible plight of the Dutch civilians who were nearly starved to death.I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the European theater of World War II. Many know this battle as "A Bridge Too Far", but it was much more than that; it was the Allies' attempt to end the war early. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way.

I much enjoyed reading this account of Operation Market Garden. It was an event I was already familiar with as I had read other accounts. I lost a lot of respect for General Montgomery, however. His idea of concentrating allied efforts to, in his view, win the war by charging into Germany via crossing the Rhine and heading to Berlin was wrong. He was a thorn in Ike's side and should have been replaced.
