We're getting spoiled with our online GPS and technology, but sometimes that isn't available in certain countries. Jamaica is a perfect example. This map has been a life saver on my frequent road trips there. I wouldn't rent a car without it.

Review

"A great battleship of a book - formidable, majestic...armed with anabundance of revealing information, guided with discerning literaryskill.... Mr. Kluger invites one to admire these moguls of tobacco theway one appreciates, say, Lenin - as brilliant strategists andresourceful technicians ...single-minded in their determination to satisfy [a mass want] and heedless of the human cost of their profit making." A behind-the-scenes history of an industry "whose structure, power, andgrowing vulnerability are so richly illuminated by this monumental andtimely book."-- The New York Times Book Review"[Ashes to Ashes is] monumental...elegantlywritten.... It will probably be the definitive volume of the subject ofcigarettes in the 20th century."-- Time Magazine"Lively, entertaining, awesomely comprehensive.... The quality ofKluger's work astonishes throughout: He actually persuaded many toptobacco executives to talk with him.... Getting the kind of good stuffKluger pulls together is just about miraculous."-- The Washington Post

From the Inside Flap

No book before this one has rendered the story of cigarettes -- mankind's most common self-destructive instrument and its most profitable consumer product -- with such sweep and enlivening detail. Here for the first time, in a story full of the complexities and contradictions of human nature, all the strands of the historical process -- financial, social, psychological, medical, political, and legal -- are woven together in a riveting narrative. The key characters are the top corporate executives, public health investigators, and antismoking activists who have clashed ever more stridently as Americans debate whether smoking should be closely regulated as a major health menace. We see tobacco spread rapidly from its aboriginal sources in the New World 500 years ago, as it becomes increasingly viewed by some as sinful and some as alluring, and by government as a windfall source of tax revenue. With the arrival of the cigarette in the late-nineteenth century, smoking changes from a luxury and occasional pastime to an everyday -- to some, indispensable -- habit, aided markedly by the exuberance of the tobacco huskers. This free-enterprise success saga grows shadowed, from the middle of this century, as science begins to understand the cigarette's toxicity. Ironically the more detailed and persuasive the findings by medical investigators, the more cigarette makers prosper by seeming to modify their product with filters and reduced dosages of tar and nicotine. We see the tobacco manufacturers come under intensifying assault as a rogue industry for knowingly and callously plying their hazardous wares while insisting that the health charges against them (a) remain unproven, and(b) are universally understood, so smokers indulge at their own risk. Among the eye-opening disclosures here: outrageous pseudo-scientific claims made for cigarettes throughout the '30s and '40s, and the story of how the tobacco industry and the National Cancer Institute spent millions to develop a "safer" cigarette that was never brought to market. Dealing with an emotional subject that has generated more heat than light, this book is a dispassionate tour de force that examines the nature of the companies' culpability, the complicity of society as a whole, and the shaky moral ground claimed by smokers who are now demanding recompense

This is the finest work on the critical subject of tobacco that I have ever read, Mr. Kluger's research is incomparable on a subject that so badly needed it. Earlier tracts on the subject were either incomplete or so didactic as to become opaque. The tragedy of tobacco production is that the moral failure was not seen as the crime it clearly was. This book explains authoritatively and in measured tone how the crime played out and is still playing out. The further tragedy of this story is that it has become a blueprint for deadly production in other industries e.g. fossil fuels, pharmaceuticals. This is not a story of designing a product but of designing a deceptive means of selling a deadly product. Delightfully, Mr. Kluger also writes very well, turning a dreary and disgusting history into the dramatic tale of depraved capitalism.

This is a long but generally fascinating book. I was rarely less than interested and to me it was a disappointment to get to the end and have unresolved issues raised (simply because the story was ongoing when written). There is a short afterword to this edition that takes the story from 1996 to 1997. The author spoke to a lot of players in the story and this comes across in the telling. This is a work of journalism as well as history. Mostly fact-based journalism - the author does express views through the story but often covers a variety of points-of-view before arriving at a conclusion. The main story threads are the growth of the tobacco industry, development of an understanding of the health issues and the cigarette industries responses to them, the marketing of product, government responses, the growth, changes in various of the main companies over time - especially the rise of Philip Morris to the major global player (It is this story I found the least interesting - there are a lot of discussion of company politics and paragraph introductions to some fairly insignificant corporate players), and the growth of the anti-tobacco forces. I thought the coverage of a major court case (Cipollone v cigarettes companies) was particularly gripping. My wife read the updated kindle version when it arrived and didn't find many text errors at all. This is the first non-fiction work I have read on the kindle and I missed the ability to use an index, but it is useful to have the bibliography here.Overall I can highly recommend this work but hopefully the kindle version can be corrected to become as fascinating a story as the paper version.

The primary competition for this book's potential readership is Allan Brandt's The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America . I say Brandt's is the better choice mainly because Kluger becomes so bogged down in minutiae that I found myself skipping many paragraphs (e.g., recitations of the accounting jargon associated with tobacco company stock transactions, exhaustive biographies of minor figures, overly technical discussions of the biochemistry and histology of tobacco-borne diseases, etc.) In contrast Brandt's eloquence and pithiness made me not want to miss a single word.

There is no question but that the book was exhaustively researched and tells you everything you might want to know about the tobacco industry over the past 100 years. Often it was compelling reading as well. But it seems to me it could have been a good deal shorter and still have gotten the main points across--say under 450 pages rather than 750 pages. It seems that every fact Kluger ever uncovered went into this book. As a general matter, I also found the book much more interesting when it was talking about the "bad guys" (i.e. the tobacco industry and particularly their advertisers), rather than the efforts of the various anti-tobacco groups to show the harmful effects of smoking. I found those sections comparatively tedious. No question that the book is quite an accomplishment though and I would certainly recommend it although I didn't find it necessary to digest every word

Mr Kluger's tome contains fascinating insight into the nuts and bolts and agendas of entiites involved with 19th and 20th C. E. history of combusted cigarettes, cigars and experimentals. Not all of it can be taken at face value, but it does cover a huge amount of information over the many aspects of this staple of the US economy.

The strongest part of the book follows the business side of tobacco. The author is especially adept (as you would expect from a novelist) at sketching out the players in the history of tobacco. He is also very good on the history of various cigarette brands, their composition, advertising, their ups and downs, sales strategies. This is the best part of the book. A number of wonderfully told stories and incidents pepper the book. The author weaves this information into a steadily growing body of evidence that smoking is harmful, and then pits the industry figures against scientists, and tosses in politicians and anti-smoking groups as the battles go on. The book has one glaring weaknesses, obvious to anyone. The author badly needed an editor to exercise control over his tendency to go off course and to go overboard and tell everything he knows about something. For example, the business diversification of Philip Morris is really tangential to the story, and should have been cut. The author's style is encyclopedic, which is not a problem at first, but it wears the reader down by the halfway point. The author seems very weak in essential areas of chemistry and biology. At one point he even refers to cellulose as "protein-like". He struggles badly with the effect of air and flue drying on the chemistry of tobacco, particularly nicotine. He seems to miss the boat on ammonia technology and the rise of Marlboros. But maybe that information came out too late for him to include it.

The author takes you to the depths of the smoking industry and their relentless effort to increase their profits and disclaim all the health and moral hazards of smoking.

If you were hoping that this series would have you loving Zuko's dear mother even more than you already loved her from the show, prepare to be disappointed. I'll try not to spoil it too much, (though with that said, spoiler warning anyway) but I will say that despite the fact that in the TV series she appeared to have made some kind of completely selfless sacrifice to save Zuko, that wasn't *quite* the case. In fact, in the 3-part series "The Search", Ursa is quite a cowardly, spiteful, and most of all selfish woman. Her self-centered actions resulted in her own children's suffering while she went off and lived her lifelong "dream". Many of the Fire Nation's royal family struggles were actually almost as much her fault as they were Ozai's. This is a bit of a disappointment since she was supposed to be the one member of the family who really loved young Zuko, but after reading this it seems she didn't quite care about him *that* much. (End spoiler content)The more I read about Ursa's past, the more and more I came to dislike her. I just felt like the story was trying way too hard to get the audience to feel sympathy toward her, and yet as much as I wanted to, I just couldn't.Well, I know one thing now. Zuko didn't inherit his ability to be kind even to those who would kill him from his mother. That being said, I did enjoy the story. It wasn't quite what I expected, which is a good thing.

If you don't want to read my long raving over this part, here's a quick summary. I love this book. Not only did it give me everything I wanted to see, like Ursa confronting Ozai, but it gave me things I didn't even know I wanted to see. The political situations are intense, the artwork brilliant, and every line spoken by the characters sounds like them. Even the love triangle (which I did not like) was handled well enough. It's a very satisfying conclusion on pretty much every level. Now for the lengthy part:In The Promise, we saw Avatar trying to branch out from the adventure storytelling and move into a more political setting, which sort of worked, but it kind of lost the fun adventure which made Avatar Avatar. In The Search they returned to their traditional story telling. It was an excellent story, but it didn't really evolve the world because it was so much like watching the original series. In Smoke and Shadow, they finally got it right. This series delves into the struggles of restoring the world order while also keeping the spirit of the original tale. When I finished the second book, I felt very iffy about it. I wanted to see them deal with Ursa's fear of Ozai . . . they didn't. I wanted to see the Fire Nation unraveling before Zuko's eyes . . . it sort of did. I wanted them to keep Azula out of it so that she could have an entire trilogy devoted to her . . . the didn't. So, a lot was riding on this book convincing me that everything the did or didn't do in Part 2 was a good idea.As indicated in my 5 stars, they were very successful.Azula was handled brilliantly. I dare not give away what happens with her, but by the end I was actually happy that they brought her back. Her motivations are very different than what they were before, and what they do furthers both her character and changes the nature of her relationship with Zuko, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how that develops in subsequent stories. The drawing on her in particular is flawless. Every look she gives, every line she says is just so, Azula.I also like seeing the political situation escalates. It moves from mild unrest to full out riots, and the way Zuko handles the situation is very interesting. I like seeing this series challenge it's characters with real problems of being in power and trying to find the best way to solve them and struggle to do what is right. It's a great way to evolve the story from the simple adventure we saw in the TV show to young adults trying to rebuild a broken world.Ursa was also handled very well. In Part 2 she was shoved to the background and mostly a worrying mom, which I didn't like. However, the transition between her worrying about Kiyi to facing her greatest fear - Ozai - is so good that it actual makes me glad she got so little focus in Part 2. Again. this story did a great job of not giving me what I wanted, but instead showing me what I didn't realize I wanted.I do have two complaints it would be that Ursa's confrontation with Ozai feels rushed. It played out the way it should, but it was only a few panels long. I felt like that really deserved an extra page or two. Even so, it's satisfying, and the ending, which focuses on Ursa, still feels very earned. The second has to do with the love triangle. Let's just say, I pretty much hate them on principle. I actually like Kei-Lo and Mai together and think Zuko should just get over her, but they have to keep throwing this forced drama in my face. I mean, it's not terrible. It doesn't ever feel like Mai is leading Kei-Lo or Zuko on, it does seem that she is legitimately confused, so it doesn't ruin her character for me, and the fact that Kei-Lo is useful beyond being a plot device is good. I just wish they could move beyond this stupid cliche and quit trying to force us to care about characters we already care about. In spite of those two complaints, I think this is a wonderful conclusion for the story. It evolves Avatar universe, gives fantastic character development (Ukano is done very well, too), and still has a nice level of humor. If Part 2 left you on the fence, but this, because it certainly makes everything in Part 2 worthwhile.

This series ends on a real cliffhanger mystery and now I have to wait even longer for it to come out.If you like the previous series, then you will definitely like this one.All the characters are here and crazy, mad Azula adds a certain painful urgency as she tromps through the books bringing destruction to everyone she touches.Prince Zuko has been transformed by his experiences, in the anime series, it seemed that the only character who needed to grow up and change was Aang, but Zuko had his own painful growing pains and he's truly the Zuko we all came to know and admire by the end of the series.Toph wasn't in this series, which was a big letdown, she's my favorite character and I really hope the writers bring her back for the next story.

As a huge fan of this series, though admittedly not until after the series had nearly ended on TV, I want to love every bit of ancillary Avatar: The Last Airbender fiction. I got so hyped for the live action movie, and was so let down. I wanted mote Avatar, more GOOD Avatar, and eventually went searching for news from the creators of the cartoon. That's when I stumbled on the existence of the comics, and I knew I had to buy them. So I gathered up old Amazon gift cards to alleviate the strain on my wallet, and bought The Promise and the first two parts of The Search (part three was not published yet) all at once, and I am so glad that I did. The art is beautiful, and the story so immediately captures the tone and pace of the cartoon that before long it was like watching the show again, which was in turn like revisiting an old friend. This is the installment in which everything come to a head. Why is Azula playing nice with the others? Answered. Where is Zuko's mother? Answered. Is Zuko actually Ozai's son and the heir to the throne of the fire kingdom? Answered. We learn so much here which develops Zuko's character, Azula's character, the character of Zuko's mother, heck, we even get good character stuff for Aang here, as well. It is slightly unsatisfying at the end, as I really wanted to see Azula resolve some of her issues here and maybe make a move toward redemption, and I don't think that anything that happens in this comic can really be taken as that. More than anything, though, I am disappointed that it ended at all. I just want this series with these characters to continue forever!

Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome: One Woman's Desperate, Funny, and Healing Journey to Explore 30 Religions by Her 30th Birthday, by Reba Riley

Review

"Hilarious, courageous, provocative, profound ... Reba Riley brings the light for seekers of all paths, reminding us that every journey of transformation begins exactly where we are. If the 'Pray' in Eat, Pray, Love had a gutsy, wise, funny little sister who'd never been to India, it would be Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome." (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature of All Things)"Whatever your beliefs or lack thereof, whether you pay heed to a savior or a spirit animal, you should read this moving, funny, thoughtful book. Reba Riley has traveled the unlikely mystic's path and come back with an enormously entertaining, immensely hopeful report." (A.J. Jacobs, author of The Year of Living Biblically and My Life as an Experiment)"PTCS is a brilliant, emotional and audacious rampage through religious sensibility, an exploration I recommend without hesitation. Enjoy!" (Wm. Paul Young, author of The Shack and Cross Roads)"Riley's debut gently offers...a powerful love that is greater than any single religious expression." (Publishers Weekly)"Reba Riley is a natural-born storyteller and writer who I expect to be reading for many years to come." (Brian D. McLaren, author/speaker at brianmclaren.net)“If your soul has ever doubted, if your feet have ever lost their way, if your halo's always just a little askew, or if your heart has been wounded by a faith community, Reba Riley's humorous, honest memoir about exploring the ‘Godiverse’ is just the thing for you.” (Sarah Thebarge, author of The Invisible Girls)"Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome is real. Been there done that. If you have been there too, this book is going to let you know you are not alone. Prepare to be encouraged to leave outright abuse of spiritual power and dogma of the kind that kills the soul. Prepare to survive. Courageous and wonderful, Reba Riley to the rescue!" (Frank Schaeffer, author of Why I Am an Atheist Who Believes in God)“Riley’s book is so compelling; beautifully written, exceedingly funny, and refreshingly honest. As she described her journey of spiritual and physical healing, I rooted for her with every page. Riley’s story is also compelling because it is our story, our journey. We can identify with her spiritual pain, her questions, her prejudices, her fears. Her experience proves that if we are willing to open ourselves up and listen, we too can find God everywhere and know the Love that is for us all. It is a book of profound hope.” (Kristen Vincent, author of A Bead and a Prayer)“Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome is a literary and philosophical triumph. Reba Riley reveals the strength of spirit through the vulnerability of flesh with tears, laughter and soul-stirring moments of profound revelation. Her first book—certainly not her last—is so much more than a memoir about faith; it’s a celebration of all that defines the human condition.” (Christian Piatt, author of postChristian and Pregmancy)“Written with beckoning eloquence and humor, Reba Riley describes an amazing interfaith journey through the depth of her broken humanity in a quest for healing and the face of God. Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome is a most valuable and inspirational guide to those on a path toward enlightenment, and especially to those seeking healing from spiritual abuse. It should be on the shelves of every counseling center and divinity school.” (Franklyn Schaefer, author of Defrocked and a United Methodist minister)

Interesting, but everything written should be taken with a grain of salt because it feels like she went through some of these religions so quickly. For instance, the Jehovah's Witnesses. As someone who grew up with that, I was concerned with the impression of them she shared, which was unfortunately, very short. She described the woman as "kind," however, what she experienced is an example of love bombing. I'm surprised she wasn't aware of this after she'd already been in a controlling religion. Jehovah's Witnesses are taught to make the religion look good. They will get in trouble if they fail to do so and they are even told that if someone dies at Armaeggedon because they turned them off, that blood could be on their hands. The kindness is not sincere. She also described the evangelizing as "selfless," however, this is not the case. They are taught to get as many "hours" of door knocking in as they can every month. If you are baptized and don't do this, you are considered a bad influence. Some are even so desperate for hours that they will lie or exaggerate on their time cards. People also want hours for bragging rights because door knocking is really the only thing Jehovah's Witnesses are allowed to pursue (no college or serious hobbies) so why wouldn't you want to share the one accomplishment you're allowed to have? Minus the electricity, it is comparable to being Amish in strictness and people don't realize this because of the "kindness" and love bombing which will disappear and turn into strict and formal shunning if you step out of line. It is a fundamental group and though they don't live in their own little communities, they might as well for how they are taught to isolate themselves and put up walls between themselves and all outsiders. I remember one of the most horrifying things growing up was being told that all these non-believers were going to die and that we were not to cry for them after Armaeggedon as birds fed on their corpses.I don't think the Witnesses are truly bad people, but they are lied to and manipulated by their leaders, who do well to cover up the secrets of their past, such as the fact that it is actually technically a sect (the original religion still exists), they have failed to predict the exact date of the end of the world several times, and more.Due to the author's interpretation of this group, I'm not sure what to make of any of her impressions, really. Because of that, I don't truly feel like I learned much. Still, I appreciate her sharing her experience. I just think people should know that some of these fundamentalist groups she explored have a history of emotional/psychological abuse and readers should know what they're actually getting into.

A very timely and honest book. I have PTCS. Your words, revealing your inner thoughts and emotions were thoughts and emotions I have experience. I could have initialed each one of them. I have read many books in my 68 years of living but never have come across one like yours. It is right on the money for so many today. Having spent over 25 years as an Ordained Minister in a Pentecostal Denomination, also growing up in a Pentecostal Ministers home, I have counseled so many but of course your not suppose to entertain the doubts your to re-direct their thoughts. Until I had my own horrible experience at a Mega-church and that all changed. If I were still counseling I would recommend this book to every single person struggling with the church drama. When someone mentions they are a Christian you become nauseated and the Christianese just sends you up a wall it's time for this book. Thank you for writing this book. If you are having doubts, questions and the whole thing is starting to make you sick, this is the book for you. 5 stars for sure.

I fell in love with this book almost instantly, this is a breath of fresh air. Coming from a cultish background, myself, I was blown away reading Reba's journey. So many things hit home in a way I have never experienced because it is generally not acceptable to speak out about religious trauma. Regardless of your religion, it seems there is always someone to tell you that "you're just bitter because your heart isn't in the right place." or "If you prayed hard enough..." or "well that was THAT church, you should try mine." So many people with answers, and not enough people with empathy. Not enough people to be understanding. Reading PTCS was like chicken soup for MY soul. Finally someone else to be honest! Someone else to not be ashamed of her truth. Even better, she walked a journey I can only hope to attempt one day. I am still in the place where the idea of entering a church makes my palms sweat, and my heart pound, and I am instantly prepared to defend myself. Maybe one day I can make peace, not only with my past, but with the idea of religion. Reba's writing made me feel like she is a kindred spirit to me (down to the frog pajamas). I have never met her, but I feel that she is a soul sister to so many people who have survived trauma... trauma from the one place we all were supposed to feel safe, loved and connected. I have been speaking out for years about my upbringing through my blog, unfortunately I am still in that very painful place. I am so happy to have a loving book to recommend to other's who seek out closure. I hope they can laugh, cry, have chills and feel a sense of connectedness just like I do.

This is my first Leesa Bow read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Charming the Outback has vivid descriptions of Broken Hill and the Aussie Outback, which I enjoyed. I haven’t been that far west, but this country girl could relate to a lot of the settings, having spent a lot of time on properties and in country towns myself.I really liked Maddy. Luke annoyed the crap out of me. It was a nice conclusion, though I thought Maddy had better chemistry with someone else in the story. You’ll have to read it to find out what I mean. Well executed 5 Stars.

Charming The Outback is a beautiful story filled with love, angst and determination. I loved watching Maddy and Luke grow both individually and together. Their story felt genuine and real.

This was just what I needed. Charming The Outback is a well rounded and robust romance with great characters and a love story that may be low on angst, but is high on gaining reader attention and providing enjoyment. This is the first book I have read by Leesa Bow, and even being a stand-a-lone, it features characters from another book, so if I’d read Winning The Player first, I would’ve enjoyed catching up with Aubree and Hunter again. I haven’t but I didn’t feel I was missing out on anything. This time we have Maddie who is Aubree’s best friend and Hunter’s cousin. She’s a total city girl from Adelaide, and owns her signature look of beautiful clothes and Jimmy Choos.Luke’s family heritage is a sheep station in the outback. It’s a long way from anywhere, hot, dusty and full of flies. It not a field of Geology which is what he really wants to do, but when family places a demand on him, it’s the family station life first and foremost with no time for shopping and high city living. He doesn’t believe Maddie would cope, and doesn’t want to force that life on her so he dumps her without a word and moves home.Things is, Maddie loves Luke, and wants to see if the Aussie Outback is something she can adapt to, so she takes a teaching contract in his small town to test the waters. But, the Luke she finds back in his home town isn’t the Luke she’d spent 10 months getting to know and love. He’s angry and doesn’t want a bar of her, trouble is, it seems the locals are quite taken with the new primary school teacher, and he doesn’t want anyone else near her either!Luckily for our couple, they’re supported by a great group of secondary characters especially as Maddie is out to prove to Luke that she isn’t the high maintenance city miss that he believes her to be, and that she’s more than capable to learn, change, and most of all, compromise. On his part, Luke has to realise his mistake in breaking things off in the way that he did, and make an attempt to fix things. I have to say I loved this book and if you are the type of reader who loves a good solid small town romance, then this is definitely for you. 4 Stars

After reading and loving Winning The Player last night, I needed more by Leesa Bow and couldn't wait to pick up Charming The Outback. I've spent the afternoon unable to put down this addictive 5 star read and have just finished it. The story of Maddy and Luke was emotional and the author writes in such a way that you're there with the characters every step of the way. I liked that Charming The Outback followed on from Winning The Player and we get to catch up with some of the characters, but this book can still be read separately and enjoyed just as much. However, I recommend that you read Winning The Player if you haven't already because you get to see how Maddy and Luke first met. Plus you'll learn more about Aubree and Hunter who are another couple you'll love just as much.Charming The Outback gives the reader a chance to learn more about the Australian outback so many of us have seen on the TV or in films. You'll see how tough life can be, but how everyone comes together and gets the job done. It was so warming to see how welcoming the locals were to Maddy, and the author gives us some lovely characters who become like friends to us just as much as they do to Maddy. Again, Leesa Bow weaves fact and fiction together so beautifully, and you can tell that she has first hand experience of being in Broken Hill. If I ever made it to Australia, I'd definitely want to visit Broken Hill and see the gorgeous sights that this very talented author allows us to visualise with her clever descriptions. As with Leesa Bow’s other books, this book is well worth the 5 stars I've awarded it. This author is one who I'd happily one click without even reading the blurb because I know I'm guaranteed a fantastic read!

The new addition is more clear on the how-to, less overwhelming. And they only recommend the curriculum that is tried and true. Less guess work.Parents do need to know that the authors mean for you to choose from among the recommendations. You are Not expected to fit in every single thing. They thought they made this clear, but they have recieved complaints about 6 or more hours of schoolwork every day.You are supposed to decide what is most important to you, or come up with a year-round schedule that balances it all.We save art and music, and science for Summer, but continue with math all year long. History and writing we do in the Fall/Winter.We use Dou-Lingo free online for Spanish. It is quick and is less involved than Rosetta Stone. My son is learning to speak Spanish from the neighbor kids he plays with, which is more a real-life application he can actually use, along with the formal word training he gets online.I also highly recommend the podcast downloaded for a small price from the authors' website. You'll see they are much more human and like the rest of us than the book makes you think they are. Its not meant to be heavy and grueling, or perfect and ideal. This is very doable if you catch the way it is intended to be used. This edition simplified it for me.The schedule recommendations, once I understood that they are just showing the different subject possibilities to choose from and I'm not actually supposed to do every one of them, are one of the most helpful features of this book. And the steps and how-to's were more clear this time around.

Love love love this book. I was a little hesitant to purchase since I have the older version, but there is so much that has been updated. The literature selections by grade level alone make this money well spent.

Wow... some funny reviews below. I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend whose homeschooled Kindergartner loves learning and has been reading for close to two years. I've been an English teacher for ten years and have grown increasingly disenchanted with both public and private schools; I've watched bright, creative, passionate young people have the love of learning sucked out of them by a flawed and over-burdened system, or, worse, fall between the cracks because they have learning differences, despite the fact that they have amazing minds. To the readers who assert that this book is for rigid, obsessive parents, I would urge them to read it again. It's not about rigidity, but about fostering excellence, which does take some hard work. I'm sure that this style of homeschooling is not for every child and every family, but it provides hundreds of resources, and I think there's something here for everyone. Granted, if you're not interested in a Classical approach, you may want to look elsewhere. But I would urge you to consider it, even if it sounds foreign or daunting. And now for my snotty asides: the reviews that are rife with spelling and grammar errors, and insist that the methods in this book are too demanding for children, are a bit hard to take seriously, you know? Other reviews are clearly written by parents who are intimidated because of how little education they themselves have... but the wonderful thing about homeschooling is that you get to learn WITH your children. It should be exciting to you, and if it's scary to confront all of the science, math, history and literature that you don't know, so much the better! Don't we want to teach our children to seek knowledge, and to try things that are difficult? And what better way to do that than to model it ourselves? If you are a lifelong learner, your children will be too.I have the greatest respect for those deeply religious Christians who indicated that while this book has much to offer, it's lacking in religious education, and they make up for on their own with Biblical study, many of whom include Biblical languages in said study.I have less respect for the reviewers who are worried that the lessons of "those evil Pagan Greeks" will teach their children to question. Here's my favorite quote from a reviewer below: "I pray God will open the blind eyes of those lusting after intelectualism (note the spelling error) and lead them to True Wisdom of God! What good is Homer and Shakespeare to the soul?"What good is Homer and Shakespeare to the soul!?! Don't you actually mean What good ARE Homer and Shakespeare to the soul? I don't even know how to begin to answer that. It's a clear case of "If you have to ask..."I begin to see why literacy rates amongst the middle class are declining, and most high school students will never take Calculus. Buy the book if you're a homeschooler or teacher interested in educating thoughtful, interesting, interested critical thinkers.

Background: I bought this book two years ago when my oldest was about 3. I did not read this cover to cover because it is not necessary to do so. This is a reference book. I read the parts that are important to us which are easy to find due to the well organized indexes and references provided in the book. I homeschooled my son's pre-K and we are getting ready to homeschool K this year. I followed many of the suggestions in this book, ignored others. I still feel this book was a great base to start out.About the book:It is intended as a comprehensive guide to choose homeschool curriculum for each academic year of your child's school years. They have a few recommendations for each topic and how to approach various subjects with flexibility.I don't believe you need to be a classical homeschooler to find this book a useful addition to your library. Whatever your homeschool philosophy it is always good to be informed about other ways of approaching teaching your children and having so many well organized resources in one place can come in handy sooner or later. You never know what will work for your child. You just have to try it and see.I know that many times I found myself googling "reading lists for preschoolers" to then remember they have a good list in this book by age. They have whole long pages on social interactions, time you should spend with your kids doing homeschool, learning reading before writing and so on.Highly recommend.
