John Dean felt privileged on being invited to be Richard Nixon and the White House’s legal counsel. Highly intelligent and skilled, Dean recognized that his main task was building a business in the White House and wrongly assumed he would have all the connections and advice necessary for the job. He also realized he had spent so much of his life working, he had no meaningful relationships outside of that professional career, so he again wooed and married his old girlfriend, Mo. It wasn’t long before his surrealistic, high-flying dreams began a slow, odious descent from legal counsel to firefighter, to fellow conspirator, to defender, to criminal and finally to prosecutor. This then is Dean’s story of Watergate, the ultimate demise of Richard Nixon and many of his staff members who never learned the lesson that power has limits! It all began with a break-in of a psychiatrist’s office to get the psychiatric records of Daniel Ellsberg to smear him and progressed to a larger break-in of the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. in June 1972. Five men were arrested for the latter break-in and Dean clearly describes the White House interference trying to get these men freed and paid hush money. It didn’t help that the men were carrying a large amount of cash ultimately found to be connected to the Committee for the Re-election of the President (Nixon). The remainder of the story concerns the cover-up attempted by Nixon’s henchmen: Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, Colson, Strachan, Mardian and others. What made it ten times worse is that everyone was caught in lying about the event, about the money used to hush testimony, about the use of pivotal figures quickly followed by their being discarded, and numerous hours and money spent in trying to deny the truth and basically save butts. At first Dean’s job seemed to be what he calls being a “firefighter,” putting out the truth before it burst into the public scene via media. As one reads these pages, it’s hard to deal with the mix of feelings of feeling sorry for these misguided men and then getting angry at the relentless justice that pursues them for their clear, untrammeled guilt. Dean portrays Richard Nixon as the wily, devious manipulator who plays dumb but is playing each of the characters toward his own end of being acknowledged as innocence. But he failed to realize that his Presidential staff would slowly unravel in fear of being indicted and eventually jailed; after each implodes, devastating testimony is given that is both convicting and self-serving, including for certain time spans Dean’s own reporting. While these men were prosecuted and served time in jail, except for Nixon who was forced to resign the Presidency, the truth has been spoken despite attempts at distorting, denying and placing blaming elsewhere.Blind Ambition: The White House Years is vital reading for a nation concerned with the abuse of power and the checks and balances systems of government that are intended to stop events like Watergate from happening and/or being kept hidden. Power has boundaries! Highly recommended reading!

Assuming you take the portrayal at face value, allowing for a small admixture of self-service and exageration, this book is a must-read. You will learn a ton about the workings of the Nixon White House in general; and in particular, the cover up in response to the Warergate scandal. There's nothing like an insider's perspective to portray the (not very attractive) human element in such large historical processes. After I stumbled across a claim that Dean testified that most of the book is grossly inaccurate, I read a few other hostile critiques. Most of them are written by people with an axe to grind. My common sense tells me that the book is mostly plausible. I mean, Dean sets out to draw himself as a weakling, lacking in integrity and a sycophantic coward. Not sure why he would take this angle unless he just wanted to make a clean breast of things. I mean, he'd already been convicted of obstruction of justice and sent to prison. What would he have to gain by distorting events at such a late date? Anyways read it and decide for yourself.

I don't remember Watergate, I was too young to care. So reading this book, I am just understanding the parallel between then and now but with one glaring difference: even at their most evil, The Mad Men type of the Nixon era remained civil in their discourse. Better than the punks running the halls right now.

It may seem strange that just after ordering a new copy of "Blind Ambition" by John Dean, today, that I am writing a review.Actually, I have the paperback edition and have read it several times. I wanted the hardback for the larger print size. This is an excellent book, not just for taking the reader behind the scenes of Watergate, but for displaying the true personality of Richard Nixon. The description that Dean gives of Nixon throughout the book corroborates the statements by Bob Haldeman and John Erlichman.Blind Ambition is a tale of a President obsessed with only one goal - to make sure he got re-elected.Richard Nixon was a man of insecurity and self-doubt, and these traits were strongly reinforced when Nixon lost the 1962 California governorship to incumbent Edmund G. "Pat" Brown. It was Lawrence O'Brien, who was responsible for leaking about the Howard Hughes loan to Nixon's brother, Donald, that played a part in the 1962 loss of election to Governor. Now, O'Brien was National Chairman of the Democratic National Party. Nixon worried about what "goods" O'Brien had on him now. Thus, the DNC Headquarters at the Watergate Complex were broken into; a third-rate burglary was turned into a major cover-up along with other crimes and White House horrors. The discouraging remark to add to the above is, after you read this excellent book, you should try to see the TV-made movie, based on the book. The movie was well done, with Rip Torn playing Nixon, and doing the best job of anyone I have seen.Unfortunately, no commercial version of the movie was released. It was a 4-part miniseries. Once-and-awhile,the channels of STARZ shows it. You should record it, if it is shown again, as it is a very good presentation, faithful to the book, and almost non-existant.Two other outstanding Watergate books, in addition to "Blind Ambition" highly recommened are "Watergate-the corruption of American Politics and the Fall of Richard Nixon" by Fred Emery (a mini-series was also done on that) and "784 Days That Changed America" by Barry Sussman (with another rare television production shown only once by Nancy Dickenson and Television Broadcasting Corp.

Even after all the years since Watergate, John Dean's well researched and brilliantly written book is spot-on and still, oh so, gripping. Watergate turned Dean's life around; Dean's books have turned the entire Washington den of corruption on it's head. It couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch. Don't stop with just reading "Blind Ambition;" read all of his DC inner circle investigative books.

I am by no means a big fan of "business books". Most feel like they're thrown together quickly and read like dirge. I was pleasantly surprised by Switch -- which both reads easily and is absolutely relevant to the problems we all face in our work (and personal) lives. It breaks down the process of change into three easily-remembered and compelling constructs, and gives lots of practical examples for each construct. I found myself incorporating the concepts from Switch into my daily activities immediately, and my zeal for the model hasn't diminished over the past couple of months (the typical half-life of a business book is days in my experience). If you deal with change in any aspect of your life -- this is an excellent book. If you think you *don't* deal with change -- you're probably not paying attention!

Switch is a book about managing change by the Heath brothers (Chip and Dan). Chip is a professor at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and Dan is a Senior Fellow at Duke University' Social Entrepreneurship center. The two have teamed up before -- in 2007 they released their critically acclaimed Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die. This latest effort focuses less on the stickiness of the idea and more on the change process itself. What should a change agent do to implement lasting change in a hard-headed organization that desperately needs it?The book is organized into eleven chapters in three parts: Part 1, Direct the Rider; Part 2, Motivate the Elephant; and Part 3, Shape the Path. The titles come from a vivid metaphor by University of Virginia psychologist Jonathan Haidt. In his book, The Happiness Hypothesis, Haidt likens a person to a rider on an elephant. The rider is the rational side of a person: the part that tells him to eat better, exercise more, and stop procrastinating, for example. The elephant is the emotional side that doesn't want to work to lose weight or exercise and would rather stay put; let's say willpower vs. won't-power; but why should that be? Whatever is autonomous and ingrained by habit belongs to the elephant. The rider is theoretically in control, but it is exhausting to continually tug on the reins and direct the stubborn elephant. Eventually the rider relents and the elephant goes back to doing what he's always done. Sound familiar? Before going much farther, you should know that two things separate Switch from so many other glib books about change: first, the book has a very solid psychological basis. Despite its accessible style, scores of major psychological findings and studies are reported and undergird the book's practical formulae for change. Second, Switch is not a self-help book. I have no doubt that the book could be used in this way, but it is really a book about how to change things. It is primarily directed toward organizational change, though its principles are much broader. And there are many surprises. The first big surprise occurs in the very first chapter."We know what you're thinking -- people resist change. But it's not quite that easy. Babies are born every day to parents who, inexplicably, welcome that change. Yet people don't resist this massive change -- they volunteer for it. In our lives we embrace lots of big changes. So there are hard changes and there are easy changes. What distinguishes one from the other?"And the surprises keep coming. Like the two researchers who dramatically and permanently got folks to reduce their saturated fat intake. Or the doctor who saved over 100,000 lives and counting in American hospitals on schedule (18 months) by getting thousands of doctors and organizations to change their practices. Or the American who went to Vietnam and changed the face of malnutrition. Or the student who saved an endangered species in a Caribbean country that didn't give two hoots about it.What do all these stories have in common? For one, none of these change agents had the sufficient budget or authority to succeed; yet, they did. How? Every one of them gave clear rational direction to the rider by finding the bright spots, scripting the critical moves, and clearly pointing to the end goal. All of them motivated the elephant by emotionally connecting with it, and they shrunk the apparent change by carefully communicating progress. They refused to underestimate their people. Instead they provided them with a newfound identity that let them to grow into the challenge. But there was more.As the authors note, many times what looks like resistance is really confusion or even the result of misaligned incentives. That's why the path needs to be shaped by making manageable changes to the environment, building sound habits, rallying the herd, and reinforcing the new habit until it becomes a way of life.Well, maybe that sounds like a lot of work. I think it is. But speaking from firsthand experience, it will be a labor of love. And if your heart is not in the change and you do not think you can derive reward from the process, perhaps you are selling yourself short -- or, maybe you're the wrong person to lead the change and you should stop kidding yourself. And perhaps that is what I like most about this book. It does not promise a panacea. It tells it like it is without the jingoism that has become the substance of many change management essays. If you are leading organizational change, the book will provide a solid prescription for achieving lasting results because Switch uses real research, reports real experiences, and provides real guidance. Here, my recommendation is enthusiastic.

Change is hard. Any change. Everywhere. In business, in personal life."Switch" is a blueprint to change. Any change. In any environment. The book is condensed wisdom on how to change. It's deeply rooted in psychology, yet written in a simple, effective language so anybody could understand and apply it."Switch" gives you not only theory but also real life examples of people changing when change is hard.If you want to change something in your life - the "Switch" is your ultimate guide.

Ever want to loose weight and you’re like me you love chocolate chip cookies? You love them so much that your 4 year old calls you the cookie monster. Are you responsible for some change in your company but don’t really have the power to make that change? Maybe you’re in charge but the entrenched ethic/patterns are totally contrary to the change that needs to be made? This is the book for you.Chip and Dan Heath explore how many organizations made the Rider (our thinking brain) and the Elephant (our feeling brain) both adopt a change. You’ll see this 2 brain thinking explored in other books like Thinking, Fast and Slow.In Switch Chip and Dan assert that our Rider is going to generally go where the Elephant wants to. With great effort it can overpower the Elephant for a short time (like when I swear off cookies) but eventually the much more powerful Elephant will win as the Rider gets tired.Switch doesn’t claim to give you all the answers to make effective change at your organization, it does give you lots of great stories and examples of how others made change and then pulls out practical application you can use to help make changes in your organization. One of the best takeaways is to make change easy. Don’t give a big overarching change policy. Give clear concise easy to carry out directions. If you’re looking to cut short term costs because you have no money maybe that direction is “We’ll always choose the cheapest option even if the long term cost is more”.With that direction all purchasers have a clear direction when making any purchasing decision. There are many more great takeaways in Switch and I highly recommend you read it.

Let me start by saying I'm an entrepreneur, running a profitable internet startup. The author neglects to mention that the vast majority of people who've achieved a 4 hour work week got there after years of working 70 hour work weeks. The author's sexism was insufferable. He assumes all his readers are men, and there are many "in jokes" at women's expense. I put the book down when I got to the line: "practice picking up girls in order to build your confidence - even if you're married". Now there's some really bad advice.

The author attempts to promote his working lifestyle for the reader broken down in four steps. I have to start by sayings this book is written at a very low reading level and a lot of needless filler. The author breaks it down in four steps D E A and LD is for definition and is probably the only part of the book of any substance. If you’re under 23, naive, and never stand up for self you might get something out of it. It’s mostly work mindset a lot of people have developed over a year or so in the work world.E is elimination which is his time management section. Honestly there is some good advice , however, there are way better books on the topic. He advocates the low information diet which basically being willfully ignorant.A is for automation. In this section he advocates for first automating/ outsourcing as much in your life as you can to save time and money. But the main focus is setting up a business online that sells things of little value very overpriced and attempting to automate that. Having worked in online marketing, I can tell you the information here is outdated, vague, and not very thorough. If you want to set up a business online I would recommend reading a different book. He also advocates calling yourself an expert and teaching courses on topics you have no authority in. Ultimately, this is where the book falls apart as this is his central way to live the four hour work week, which if you take a look at his own life he isn’t living that way.For L is for liberation and I took his low information diet and stopped reading. Conclusion: this book is for naive, weak, dummies who hate their jobs and will take any terrible advice to give them hope. Ultimately this book is like his own online business which sold a product of little value he wasn’t an expert in. Which is what this book is.

I had heard a lot of people rave about this book before I finally picked it up and decided to read it for myself. I'm glad that I read it, but I don't think it was quite as life-changing for me as it was for some of my friends. Don't get me wrong, Ferriss makes some excellent points and he's got some really great tips and tricks in here, I'm just not sure how universal they really are.First of all, when I picked up the book, I didn't expect that he was literally working only four hours a week. I thought he was just talking about ways to spend less time working, but that "The 4-Hour" just sounded good (since he now has a whole line of books with titles that start that way). Nope. Turns out he really only worked four hours every week for a few years. I hate him. Now, with his series of books and everything, that's not true so much, so I hate him less. Now his job is much more similar to what I actually want to do.As I said, Ferriss has some great ways of eliminating clutter and busywork, including things you don't even think of as busywork. I've already started implementing some of these tips at work, and they've come in pretty handy so far. I keep meaning to get rid of a bunch of my physical clutter, but my laziness keeps getting in the way of that. I'll get around to it in the next few weeks.I also appreciated his philosophy of taking mini-retirements throughout life, rather than one long retirement at the end of life. I never did understand the point of retirement, so Ferriss's plan sounds much more appealing to me. As he put it, retirement should be nothing more than a fail-safe in case something happens and you are physically (or mentally) incapable of working. My thoughts exactly. My main problem with his philosophy is that it really only works if you have a product that you are not actually making, but that you can sell. For example, even if I were to quit my day job and write all day every day, I would still be working a lot. Granted, that would make my job a whole lot more portable, but I could never get away with only working four hours per week (at least not until after I sell that bestselling novel, which is such a realistic plan!) In order to do it his way, I would need to have something that is already produced, or that someone else is making (clothes, dietary supplement, etc.) where all I have to do is collect the money that comes in from those sales.Of course, that's a lot harder than it sounds. His ways of eliminating the useless from his life are really quite impressive, and not to be underestimated, but I still wonder if someone in their twenties, who is just starting out in life, can really make his plan work? Some of his success stories include people negotiating working remotely, because they have built up value in their company. Someone who has only been working at their current job for a year or two does not have the kind of leverage necessary to do that.Additionally, he talks about the trick to getting out of your job so you can go have that great once-in-a-lifetime adventure. He mentions considering the worst-case scenario and the fact that worst-case is not necessarily all that bad. One of his points he brings up is that, if he loses his job, he can get another one fairly easily. Well, great for him, but the original book was written before the job market collapsed, followed by this lovely "jobless recovery". I was recently unemployed for eight months and it was not fun. I, too, thought I could get another job within a few months, but that did not turn out to be the case. So, if I go spend all my money on a mini-retirement now, and then come back only to find that I can't get a job for another year, I'll be screwed. Yes, even that worst-case scenario isn't that bad. I could always move back in with my parents, but I'd really rather not. I love them, but they have enough to deal with right now, and the last thing I want to do is burden the people around me because I decided to go globe-trotting for a few months. Timothy Ferriss told me it would be fine!

An excerpt from the book:"Practice the art of nonfinishing. This is another one that took me a long time to learn. Starting something doesn’t automatically justify finishing it. If you are reading an article that sucks, put it down and don’t pick it back up. If you go to a movie and it’s worse than Matrix III, get the hell out of there before more neurons die. If you’re full after half a plate of ribs, put the damn fork down and don’t order dessert. More is not better, and stopping something is often 10 times better than finishing it. Develop the habit of nonfinishing that which is boring or unproductive if a boss isn’t demanding it."This book has no redeeming qualities. So, I've decided to put it down, and I won't be picking it back up. For this one bit of advice, I thank the author.Maybe some people get something out of it. For me, it was a huge waste of my precious time. I like the concept of lifestyle design. I think it is a valid concept. However, his egocentric advice is useless to someone in a different stage of life. This book is NOT one size fits all.I only hope I can get my money back.

The free sample is written simple easily understood English and promises an approachable and instructive book. The rest of the book is written by a person who obviously has no idea how to write clearly and and has no respect for his readers. It is a slapdash effort that gets worse and worse as it nears the end as he struggles to use as many big words as possible in order to achieve his desired page count.I kept working hard to get to a payoff that never came.Like the old joke" there's got to be a pony in here somewhere".Some word uses are frankly irritating such as repeatedly using the the word "nuance" when he means "aspect" to just give one example.I felt cheated. Don't waste your time.

I liked the book, and although I am not entirely sure yet that it will work for me, it gave me some insight as to what goes on with addiction, procrastination and laziness. I was addicted to cigarettes for 13 years and gave them up 40 years ago. On the third try, I was finally successful using a similar program to this with a slow reduction of nicotine. Going 'cold turkey' has never worked for me, but slow change has. Today, I battle with overweight and lack of motivation from too many years of diet failure. I have some other bad habits, like staying up late, and knowing that it is bad just doesn't help me stop doing it. I have a lot of interests in life and I feel the pull of them distracting me from my goals all of the time. What this book did for me was that it helped me to see how the pleasurable things I enjoy were pulling me away from those goals, and the unpleasant things required for accomplishing my goals were so unpleasant in my mind that they were keeping me from doing them. So, I made a list of my goals and a list of the 14 psychological weapons and strategies in this book, and I applied each one to the 4 goals I listed. While I'm finding that I am making progress on the 1st goal, the last 3 haven't gone so well yet, and that being because my goals and life, in general, are very time consuming. I thought I would divide my time up each day into 4 time slots for the 4 goals, but it never seems to work out. However, being able to look over each of the 14 strategies before I start working on one of the goals seems to be helpful. I thought that maybe I'll have to work on only one goal until I've mastered it or formed a new habit. When I quit smoking, I was entirely focused on that one problem, how much I hated it, and had to get rid of it. The problem with diet and exercise is that it takes up even more of my time to focus on and is complicated by arthritis, now that I'm older. I also run out of gas sooner than I did when I was young. Focusing on just one thing makes everything else in my life (like my housework) fall apart, so the problem now becomes a matter of balance. Now, I've given myself a 5th goal, that of having balance in my life. Yeah, I really needed this book. I just hope I have enough years left to make it work.

At the small price for the Kindle edition, I decided to give this book a try.Very disappointed. There is not really any new advice here. Main points seem to be making the action more pleasurable and the procrastination habit less pleasurable, plus controlling environment. But you're left to your own device how to apply that.In the last chapter, the author gives examples where the tips are applied. In all cases, the advice is very (too) short. In some cases, the advice is just silly or unhealthy (sleep on a bad mattress, drink more coffee!).There are no real life examples, no real cases or no user feedback. It's just theoretical.Off course, the advice in the book can be added to whatever you're already doing. But it doesn't offer the insight the title promises.I think Self Discipline in 10 Days by Theodore Bryant is a much better choice. In a strange way, this book is kind of motivating: it seems way to easy to get a book published, I may try my own.

First couple of chapters sounded promising for a somewhat different approach to help with procrastination and other bad habits. But the second half of the book was disappointing when it came to solutions. It left me feeling sucked in and then let down. The beginning text served more as a sales pitch that convinced me to purchase the book--that's about all. Sorry.

Not an enjoyable read. Very thick writing. All theory and no tangible tools to use. Would not buy again.

The book is written like the author did most of his writing in academic situations where he had to stretch 10 pages worth of thoughts into a 50 page paper. Excessively wordy, and uses footnotes simply to add his own thoughts. It's a philosophical treatise on psychology. Meaning he pontificates on his own thoughts or on his observations of other people, rather than accurately describing his own experiences and how he changed.I was looking for solutions on how to stop procrastinating, not somebody's random rambling on what factors cause somebody to procrastinate. Not even sure I will finish the book. It's a good example of why publishing companies screen manuscripts and why editors exist. It's a waste of the $8 I spent on the book. Maybe if it had been only $2 I wouldn't be so annoyed.I mean, who reads a book to get a footnote on the "central limit theorem" from statistics that takes up half a page.

Interesting premise but a little too arrogantly written for my taste. It would have been a thousand times more readable if he'd had a little intellectual humility and put forth his theory/anecdotes forward as just that: theories and anecdotes. Can this help people? Maybe. Was it enjoyable to read? Not really.

The solution to motivational troubles is not grit or willpower, but understanding and introspection. Once you grasp the first principles behind the psychology of motivation, you will be able to intelligently control your actions. Roman's book taught me this, and has been a valuable addition to my life :)

"Solaris""(TM) 10 Security Essentials "describes the various security technologies contained in the Solaris operating system. The book describes how to make installations secure and how to configure the OS to the particular needs of your environment, whether your systems are on the edge of the Internet or running a data center. The authors present the material in a straightforward way that makes a seemingly arcane subject accessible to system administrators at all levels. The strengths of the Solaris operating system's security model are its scalability and its adaptability. It can protect a single user with login authentication or multiple users with Internet and intranet configurations requiring user-rights management, authentication, encryption, IP security, key management, and more. This book is written for users who need to secure their laptops, network administrators who must secure an entire company, and everyone in between. The book's topics include Zones virtualization security System hardening Trusted Extensions (Multi-layered Security) Privileges and role-based access control (RBAC) Cryptographic services and key management Auditing Network security Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) "Solaris""(TM) 10 Security Essentials "is the first in a new series on Solaris system administration. As I mentioned in my review of Solaris 10 System Administration Essentials, I bought the two books together. I read the other book first and was disappointed by the hand-waving treatment of important topics and sometimes outdated concepts. I also felt misled by the author attribution. While it was my mistake to infer Sun engineers had written the book, "Solaris System Engineers" still misrepresents many of that book's contributors. If I had written that content and dared call myself a system engineer, I'd imagine my employer would want to know what I mean by that phrase, followed by a quiet resignation.Thankfully, this book is quite different. It is, for starters, attributed to "Sun Microsystems Security Engineers" and there's no mistaking that by the quality of the content. The first two chapters present exactly what I think such a volume should include, namely, a motivation for the subject and an example-driven overview of all the aspects of security that enter into administering this operatiing system. These chapters are simple, clear, and set a solid foundation that makes the sometimes-dry content to follow easier to digest. The chapters that follow could be longer, but I think the content mostly delivers on the "essentials" idea. The treatments aren't comprehensive, but they're enough to get started in several areas and explore what the Solaris tools make possible. Chapter 3, "System Protection with SMF," highlights a few aspects of Solaris' Service Management Facility that are often overlooked, and provides useful examples the reader can work through. I also liked Chapter 5, "Privileges and Role-Based Access Control," despite the 4-5 unnecessary screen shots of Solaris Management Console. This topic often gets mired in half-finished explanations of the configuration components. Here the roles of these components are laid out in a deliberate, patient manner that makes it easier to connect the dots. Most software engineers are not great writers. The easiest thing for many of them to do, it seems, is to transliterate from design documents and/or code to an exposition of features and possibly how they are implemented. Some chapters follow that dull, dry pattern. A beginner, grateful for any kind of help, might not mind. But an editor who insists the writer dig deeper for the intended audience would have helped a lot here. A detail-heavy topic like Chapter 10, "Solaris 10 Network Security," tends to suffer from too much show and not enough tell. The imbalance is strongest in Chapter 8, "Key Management Framework," which is all of nine pages -- closer to "skeletal" than "essential" but oh well. In fact, if you read in order, starting with Chapter 6, "Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM)" and Chapter 7, "Solaris Cryptographic Framework," you can almost hear the breathing get more labored as you go. The going generally gets tougher to the end. The last chapter, "Configuring and Using Trusted Extensions," is welcome relief from that trend, but it would also benefit from a discussion that motivates the reader: is it potentially useful? How? If it's merely cool to a lot of users, that's ok to me, but please do tell me what fun I'm missing.Overall, the information provided in this book is strong and useful. It is certainly more accessible than a lot of existing documentation. On price: if I could save $15 or more by printing the PDF of the book, I would happily live without the binding and the nice cover. With that in mind, I wouldn't pay retail for this book, which I find a shade too thin.

A very good starting place to further harden an obserdly hard operating system. For those that have an interest in IT security, this is another useful point of referrence -- Microsoft types waste not your time, this far and beyond what you all think of security.

Good book

Just as it says on the cover, it's essential. I've had it for a couple days and now I can't live without it. It's answered so many nagging questions. Yay Solaris!

Although this book was written in 1985 many of the concepts and anecdotes in it hold up well. The landscape has changed to more personalized messaging opportunities, but Ogilvy's main points about facts, emotion, narrative, and connection still applies. He seems to be a fan of balancing creative with research and had the foresight to understand that both were changing with the times. No doubt if he personally was still around there would be some additions to account for new trends and technologies but the concept of finding what works best for the medium would stay the same.Ogilvy made his name on print and TV, so most of the anecdotes are along those lines. It is also amusing at times to see the changing social norms that make some of the tropes and hooks feel outdated.Good read as a part of a comprehensive look at advertising but don't think this is the only thing that must be read, or that it should be taken as gospel.

Great book for a newbie learning about marketing! This book doesn't have all the answers you may ask about marketing, but it answers a lot! He gives good basic guidelines that you should follow, not just as a marketer, but as a marketing firm and company. This is an old school book, so it doesn't include anything about digital marketing. But if you do any marketing outside the digital world, this is a great guide! Some chapters are better than others, depending on what you want to get out this book. I found the information for large marketing firms,TV ads, ads for travel, and ads for international firms to be boring, because that doesn't relate to me, but everything else was well worth my time! You might feel the same way, but remember, the marketing industry is big, with so many roles to play in it!

Let's face it, Ogilvy made great headway for the advertising industry. I'd even go as far as saying that his advertising methods are among the best the world has ever seen.If you're new to the business, interested in the business, or even an old ad dog running out of tricks, you need to own this book. The best part about this book has got to be the visual references of some of the most successful ad campaigns since the dawn of advertising. If you don't take away some new ideas, you need to read it again. Some of the techniques might be slightly outdated, but you shouldn't rely too heavily on one book for inspiration and information anyway. Why reinvent the wheel when you have the soundest principles in advertising at your fingertips? Although Ogilvy's book is almost 25 years old, it's jam packed with timely instruction, insight, and examples. Or perhaps because it is 25 years old. Ogilvy quotes colleague Bill Bernbach:"It is fashionable to talk about changing man. A communicator must be concerned with unchanging man ... The creative man with an insight into human nature, with the artistry to touch and move people will succeed. Without them he will fail."Ogilvy had insight in spades, practical experience, common sense, a passion for research as well as creativity, and above all, a relentless focus on selling. Pick any few paragraphs at random and all those qualities will shine through. Among the many ideas I found really helpful--1. Branding means giving your product personality. (For example, the man in the Hathaway shirt wore an eyepatch.)2. Facts sell better than hype.3. The principles of direct response apply to all forms of advertising.4. Creativity is worthless unless it sells.5. Copywriting is the heart of advertising.6. Use the brand name in your headline. Otherwise 80% of readers may never see it.7. Long copy sells.8. Analogies, big words, and naming the competitor confuse people.9. Pricing cannot be determined scientifically.10. Excellent graphic design is simple graphic design.11. Corporate advertising is worthwhile.12. Always include a promise in your headline.13. The era of the blockbuster brand is ending. (Ogivly detected the "Long Tail" 20 years before most of us!)14. According to Ogivly, "...advertising is no more and no less than a reasonably efficient way to sell."But this summary doesn't do the book justice. He makes solid points nonstop. Not surprising for a master copywriter and former door-to-door salesman, he writes in plain English. He offers "big picture" reflections on the advertising industry, including an impassioned defense of advertising against charges of hucksterism. He offers detailed tips that are just as important, mainly on print advertising, direct response, and dealing with clients.Educational, authoritative, fun to read. A+

This is not a textbook and it is not a new book, so you won't read about any kind of internet advertising and you're definitely getting one perspective (but you couldn't find a better perspective if you had to choose just one). If you want an overview of the core principles that are true for ALL ad-like communications, this is a must-read. The medium might change, but the principles remain the same -- and nobody knew the principles like David Ogilvy. For those wanting a current view of the ad world -- especially involving internet or social media -- read this book FIRST and then buy any of a number of books on current practices. This will teach you the fundamentals.
