Wish I'd come across this when It came out as there still would have perhaps been a way to influence my brother to find a strategy for staying here on Earth, despite the challenges.Kevin doesn't glorify the event in unrealistic terms. He delves into what it took for him to stay as well as possible following his recovery from this lowest point in his life.He continues to share his story and works like a champion to help others find a way to step back from that ledge. Having been touched with family members suffering with depression and suicidal issues, I was actually afraid to open this book, but Kevin tells his story in such an honest and non dramatic way, it is therapeutic to read about what someone else's struggle is like. I think it can be really helpful for mental health workers who have not experienced this and need to see what it is rally like to experience mental health issues and psychiatric care and the problems with access to medication. If you have a chance to learn more about Kevin, I encourage you to, he is incredibly inspiring.

Ever since I saw Kevin Hines on the 2006 documentary film, "The Bridge," I knew his story was unique. In his book, Kevin shares his life events before, during, and after his suicide attempt at the Golden Gate Bridge. He also gives the reader an insight into his mind as he struggles with bipolar disorder. As soon as I received "Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt" in the mail, I could not stop reading as I kept turning the pages day and night. Not once did I get bored with this book as Kevin has a way with words, especially when describing his own mentality. I must give him praise for sharing his personal life with brutal honesty. Each chapter tells its own story. Even after jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and surviving such an attempt, he does not live "happily ever after": Kevin admits that each and every day is a challenge to live life to the fullest as there is no "cure" for bi polar disorder or any other mental illness. In this beautifully-written memoir, Kevin Hines does not hold anything back. Kevin reminds everyone that life is truly a gift that should not be taken for granted. Suicide has never, is never, and will never be the solution to any problem. He also gives advice on how to reach out to others if anyone is going through a difficult time with a mental illness. There is help. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt alone in this world due to life's struggles. In reality, no one is alone: Kevin shows that he cares about others who can relate to him by giving hope through his words or encouragement. But if you want depth, this is not the one for you.Part One gives you a preview of the scope of Treasury's work but there was no depth to the discussion. Especially if you work for a manufacturing firm. For example, the part on accounts receivable management - this is a big deal in any company because this is cash from operations. The book just breezed through it. There were no discussions on Treasury's role in setting and enforcing credit policies. Or best practices in AR management.As for Part Two: Financing, you are better of reading Brealy Meyers.For Part Three: Risk Management, its good that the book breezed through different hedge instruments. In real life, manufacturing companies barely used hedges against currency and interest rate.For Part Four: Systems. I wish there were some illustration on payment transaction specifically how Treasury system ties up with different office systems such as Payroll, Procurement, Customer Management, etal.

I got a job as a treasury analyst. Even though I got a MBA degree and majored in Finance, I had no clue what treasury analyst does. So I got this book 2 weeks before I started working. It was a perfect book for me. It gave me a quick overview of what treasury department does and helped me reviewing what I've learn that can apply to treasury job. It is also very practical and easy to read. I finished it in less than a week. It is definitely far from enough for get deep knowledge about treasury, but was perfect for my case.

I'm moving from an administrative support role into a treasury analyst role and this book is excellent. It is well written, offers comprehensive coverage of many activities within a corporate treasury department, and helpful with my jump start into the treasury culture.

I work on a Corp. Treasury FX Risk Management Desk as a technologist and this book has given me great insight into the structure, roles, and charter of each of the various groups within the larger organization. Very highly recommended from that perspective alone.

This book is not what it says it is. It has nothing to do with Treasury at all. If you are looking for a book to teach you how to run your treasury department , this is NOT the book.

I bought this book to preapre for a major interview. I think it gives you a good overall descriptionof the Treasy Management. If you have a few days for cramming for an interview then this is the way to go.It also helps that the autohor is a CPA. May be the hedging part could be a little bit more detailed but, ithink the goal of the author was to give you a general description instead of getting into very detailedstrategies.I am sure you will find this book useful as i did!

In his novel the "English Major" he has his character eat a steak in a Montana diner that's downright arousing. "My porterhouse had a labial rose rareness and I thought about how things get confused with desire."In another of his stories, "The Great Leader," a character favors menudo, a Mexican dish made with tripe, because as he says, "the labial texture made him horny."Harrison also likes to quantify his food. His main character in "The English Major" has the best French fries of his life at that same diner in Montana. Seven is the number of whiskeys another character in another book prefers to have in one sitting. At a tavern near Casper, Wyoming, one character enjoys "one of the top five burgers of his life in the category unfrozen half-pound patty."As you might expect food is also classified and equated with sexual desire in a number of the essays in "The Raw and Cooked," this collection of Harrison food writing which is mainly reprinted from columns he wrote for "Esquire" and other magazines.Everything he does and experiences, Harrison approaches with gusto, even more so with food and food writing. Food, luckily, is also the inspiration for this collected volume that is satisfying in way not easily described. I bought this after seeing Jim Harrison on an episode of an Anthony Bourdain show about Livingston, MT. This book fully lived up to my expectations, and I went on to read everything else by this author I could get my hands on. I was inspired by his work.

The author's inclinations towards excess and defense of gluttony can be off-putting. Nonetheless, I got some good cooking ideas from him. Despite his eating habits he lived to a fairly great age, so chaqu'un a son gout (pun intended.)

If you enjoy fine, articulate commentary, this is the book for you. JH comments upon food, nature, sex...all things of a sensitive nature.... and does it memorably, zestfully and with humor. The one irritation for me was the "name dropping", but one could say that habit contributes to the understanding of the author's personality. Jim Harrison's a bit of an "open book", and one comes to feel a sense of familiarity with him. I haven't read his poems, but look forward to the experience. For me, this book will stay in my library pending another reading or a search for a remarkable recipe. It can NOT be categorized as a "recipe book", however....more a source for technique.

Jim Harrison walks in a world where people routinely stuff animals inside other animals, saute the sweetbreads to feed the cat, and routinely have soft-shell crab FedExed to their remote writerly outposts. This is evident from reading "the Raw and the Cooked", a collection of his food essays which appeared in Esquire and Men's Journal, among other barometers of male taste.(...)Harrison is at his best detailing those hidden corners of America that are quickly vanishing from our contracting universe where new advances in cuisine are largely limited to colored ketchups. And we both decry the flavorless but universal boneless, skinless chicken breast kept on menus everywhere for its entirely unprovocative nature, usually presented with all the flare and originality of an Alvarado Strret whore. The lengths to which Harrison will go NOT to eat a boring meal are fun to read, as is his continually incongruous Republican bashing. His writing is as relevant to your life as you would like it to be.Where Harrison gets off-target is in his frequent name dropping of business and personal associates. Do we really care that he's pals with Harrison Ford or has made moon-eyes across the table with Winona Ryder? Save that for tarpon fishing trips with Hunter Thompson and Jack Nicholoson. Also, some of the contents of his backwoods pantry seem a bit fantastic, especially for those of us who live 400 miles away from the nearest specialty grocer. Fresh serranos, ground chiltepins, dried posole, etc are all instantly at his fingertips whenever necessary for an impromptu midday snack. It does liven up his writing, however.(...)

Well, there certainly is more than enough erudition in all of these reviews. How about just enjoying the food, as Jim Harrison does? My copy is worn out from making the most fabulous meatball recipe on this earth! I have read all of Jim Harrison's books, but totally enjoy his take on life in his non-fiction particularly. Get over the fact that he overdoes the name-dropping.I lived in the U.P. for many years, but never heard of him till I moved to New York and discovered his books and magazine writing. An amateur food writer? I beg to disagree. If measured by how badly he makes you want to frequent the dives (even more than the four star restaurants) to try the meals and experience the ambience he so deliciously describes, then he is the best of food writers. He also solved a mystery my husband and I both suffered from - gout! This book is a steal at any price, and a joy to read for food and wine lovers.

Donna is a bona fide genius of autism. I don't know why the psychiatrists, psychologists and doctor's of all descriptions aren't hammering down her door to pick her brain on how to understand autism better. I mean she HAS autism, had no meaningful language till 9 years - who else to ask how it feels, what it looks like and means to live with autism? She is a very sensory person whose ability to empathise is very strong and in some ways it seems was hard won. Her work changed my son and family's life for the better. Essential reading - especially for those whose kids aren't as visual or who don't act like Temple Grandin! Her ability to compassionately break autistic and other behaviours into mentally edible parts is a joy to read. I had a highlighter with me the whole way through the book.

Invaluable book for any parent who is having trouble understanding what makes their autistic child tick. Very informative and helpful.

This book is a masterpiece! I'm not easily impressed and I've read many books on autism, this one is head and shoulders above them all. There is a HUGE amount of information packed into this book covering everything from dietary and environmental influences to anxiety, mood and personality disorders which all cluster together and underpin an individual's ASD. Describing it as a "fruit salad" with each individual having different pieces making up their ASD is genius. It is a book you will return to again and again for help and understanding. I think a good basic knowledge of Autism would be an advantage before reading this book or else it may blow your mind, but I think everyone should read it, in fact I'd say it is essential to gain a far deeper understanding of ASD, there are so many stereotypes and misunderstandings that Donna has successfully smashed. Every person who has a child/spouse/relative/student/friend on the spectrum, individuals who have ASD and professionals who work in this field would all greatly benefit from this book it is worth it's weight in gold, this book does not get anywhere near the recognition it deserves, it should be winning awards!!! Thank you Donna Williams for sharing your incredible insight and experience, this book is a much needed gift to the world.

This is an excellent book for parents, educators and other professionals who teach/live/work with people who have autism.The "jumbled jigsaw" is what is so sadly misunderstood and mislabelled by many; sadly, many such "experts" apply the Procrustean Bed tactics to the autistic population. This helps none and hurts all.Raun Kaufman, the child for whom "Son-Rise" and "Son-Rise II: The Miracle Continues" was written, said in "Son-Rise II" that "expert" is the biggest misnomer for that very reason above. He was diagnosed with severe autism in infancy and for the first nearly three years of his life displayed behavior suggestive of Kanner's Autism. Early intervention turned the tide for Raun; now an adult, he has no residual behaviors or tendencies of this neurobiological condition. He is also currently the CEO of a company.Raun rightfully points out that had many people listened to these so called "experts" who recommended institutionalizing people with autism, many rays of light and hope would never shine. Raun Kaufman; Walker Stacey; Gunilla Gerland; Sean Barron; Tony Randazzo; Ben Levinson; Jeremy Kephart; Ryan Hamilton; Georgiana Thomas; Donna Williams and countless others whose stories we don't know have provided the Voice of Hope for many. Each of these above people had or still have autism to varying degrees; each have either written or have been the subject of biographies about living with autism. Each one of these people and countless others have lent their voices; their experiences and their explanations of autism so as to help encourage tolerance. Donna Williams and her scholarly books, this included have certainly helped move that process along. Had the so called experts' advice been followed, think of the loss we would all be suffering today. Just read Annabelle Stehli's books about people who have been successfully treated with Auditory Integration Therapy and who are no longer autistic; Karyn Seroussi's and Lynn Hamilton's sons were successfully treated with a special diet as was Tony Randazzo, who had an allergy to milk. Patricia Stacey's son Walker Stacey and two of Catherine Maurice's children were eased of the autism spectrum with ABA and Floor Time. Jane McDonnell's son Paul ("News From the Border") offers his own insights into living with autism; he was helped by general acceptance from others and his own desire to adapt to the neurotypical world. Paul was informally treated with ABA; he was able to see what constituted acceptable behavior, yet at the same time recognize his autistic tendencies and keep them in check. This is still another valuable book that the world at large needs.The point is, autism is as varied as there are individuals who have it and so the approaches have to be tailored to meet each individual's needs. Instead of dismissing people with autism as their label, Ms. Williams has once again brilliantly demonstrated how important it is to encourage talents and interests. She is married; an artist and author as well as having a plethora of credentials. Her works are valuable and needed; this book deserves a place of honor.At present the count is 1 in every 150 births...autism is on the rise. There is a real need for literature like this and the sensible approaches that Ms. Williams has written about here and in her other works. Autism does effect everybody on Planet Earth - whether or not you have autism, there is a 100% chance that you are related to someone who does or work with someone who does or just know somebody on the spectrum. Autism is an in-your-face condition that is all the more prominent due to the increase in statistics.Institutionalizing people creates a silent underclass. It appears to do no good and is not an effective method in "treating" autism. Autism is not a mental illness; it is a sensory neurobiological condition that affects sensory responses and language. I've beaten on the Different Drum for years to get that message across and Donnna Williams brilliantly accomplishes that in her books.Be sure to read this and buy some extra copies to give to others.
