I'm not one to write a review as I am happy with the reviews others submit and those reviews lead me to make the right choices……so what I have to say is redundant. However, I have to tell all readers that love France (not only its food), but everything about France, that this book will educate you about France's history and its relationship to its cuisine. I read it slowly so as to absorb the richness of a well written book. I've been visiting France, for over 20 years and so much of what I have learned by its residents now makes more sense; there are reasons they think the way they do about the food…..and are more than eager to talk about it in detail.You won't be sorry you spent time reading "The Food of France".

For this "foodie" (sorry for the term) who cooks and spends as much time as I can in France, this is the shorthand equivalent of "Larousse Gastronomique." Sure, it's dated, but it's accurate as far as it goes, and very well written, by an opinionated authority with a sense of humor. It describes French culinary classics in the context of their country's history, dividing the country into its general regions of "buttter, oil, and lard." the book is probably not for the beginning cook or traveler, but it suggests specialties to seek out wherever you might find yourself in France. Along with almost everything written on its subject in the 20th century (note, for instance MFK Fisher), it bemoans industrialization, tourist-driven erosion of food quality (and fast food was not even on the French horizon!), and the loss of highly local specialties. All true, but if you're interested in food and stay away from tourist centers, you can still find utterly delicious local specialties in France, from pastries, bread, and cheese at local markets to full meals off the main squares. We'll buy the Kindle version for our next trip.

Root was very much ahead of his time in recognizing and describing regional Italian food. Yet the writing style is certainly like a travelogue: driving north on X highway, on the east the soil changes from alluvial to heavy clay at marker 67 etc.I wish he had included recipes for some of the lesser known dishes he describes as many seem to have faded from current cookbooks.

I moved to Europe in the late 70s when Waverly Root still wrote on food, culture and life-in-general for the International Herald Tribune. At that time he was already advanced in age and had in fact invested much of the 20th century learning what makes the French who they are. This book represents a bit of the old way of perceiving France as the leading culinary and viticultural thought-leader of its time (a vision which persisted into the Kennedy years, but not far beyond). A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, and nouvelle cuisine and nouveau monde wines have changed the way sophisticated people think about food and drink.Nonetheless, the book -- the details, the imagery, the culinary analysis, the richness of the language, the enthusiasm -- remains an extraordinary vital resource on French cuisine. Whether you are an expert on France, or merely curious, Root gives you the lowdown on what grows where, how it is transformed into food, and what local people might drink with it. All within the rich context of French history and geography.Breathtakingly clear, Root divides Gaul into three parts: those that cook with butter, those that cook with olive oil, and those who cook with lard and goose fat. It is a simple and coherent framework which allows the reader to immediately comprehend the inherent differences in regional cuisines.In short, even if you know French food well, you will certainly find something insightful and amusing in this book.

This is by far the best book I have ever read on France and what makes it such a unique and beautiful country. Yes, it was written a good time ago, but unlike America history is something to cherish and is very present in France. Mr. Root captures the pure essence of France through it's food. I would strongly encourage anyone traveling to France or returning from a trip to read The Food of France. As a food writer from a day when writers told stories Mr. Root takes you into each of the regions of France provides you with tidbits of unknown and known history and the food that was shaped by it. Mr. Root knew his food very well and enjoyed it in a way that many would only hope to, a true pleasure in gastronomic reading.

The topic, broadly, is the relationship of cuisine to its Terroir. the text is incredibly engrossing and informative. This author's place in history and time -- an American, writing in the 1950's about knowledge acquired between WWI and WWII, combined with his writing talents, make this book indispensable to both the traveler and the chef. What an insight into what makes the French so... well, French. Root famously divides France into three geogra-culinary categories: those who cook with lard, those who cook with oil, and those who cook with butter. Helpful Maps, good index make it an excellent guidebook. I am so proud to have a good used hardcover of this book in my Library.

The quality of printing of this book are horrendous: the pages are double-printed, making them blurry and hard to read. I returned the first one I purchased and asked for a replacement, which was similarly defective. Now when I try to return this second defective book my account shows $0.00 to be credited to my account! Amazon fail. I’ll go to Barnes and Noble to get a copy of this book while I fight with Amazon for a proper refund.

Antony Beevor was educated at Winchester and Sandhurst. A regular officer in the 11th Hussars, he served in Germany and England. He has published several novels, and his works of nonfiction include The Spanish Civil War; Crete: The Battle and the Resistance, which won the 1993 Runciman Award; Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege: 1942—1943; and Berlin: The Downfall, 1945. With his wife, Artemis Cooper, he wrote Paris: After the Liberation: 1944—1949. His book Stalingrad was awarded the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, the Wolfson History Prize, and the Hawthornden Prize in 1999.

This is the single most exhaustive and best description of Operation Market Garden ever written. Written with the benefits of an exhaustive research of the British, American, Dutch and German records, the book provides amazing detail to "The Bridge Too Far" in Arnhem, Nethlerlands. The whole plan suffered from the plain fact that it relied on a single road of attack by the British XXX Corps where going off the road was a near impossibility due to the wet, boggy polders, obvious to anyone who has spent any time in The Netherlands (they rarely use fences in pastures as a dug ditch will quickly fill with water creating a natural barrier). The failure to listen to Dutch military personnel about the geographical defeat of the plan was just another in a string of Montgomery ego led disasters. The utter evil -- absolutely barbaric and shocking to the conscious -- actions of the Nazi SS, the German commanders in The Netherlands, the Dutch SS and the average German soldier are properly detailed and the Dutch people would rightly demand a fuller accounting of the barbarous actions during those months. The author thoroughly explores the lack of planning by Montgomery and Browning, the willful self delusion of Montgomery borne from an ego that held little regard for the futility and needless death of British and American troops. Reluctantly and very mistakenly Eisenhower put American Divisions under the command of the British General Montgomery in what turned out to be the greatest loss of any American Airborne Division -- before or since. Montgomery should be a national disgrace to the British, that is clear. Eisenhower began acting as a politician in deferring to Monty's superhuman ego, and abdicated his role as general commanding in a war. The greatest suffering was then endured by the Dutch people. Epic in its tragedy. A lesson in failed leadership by the British and American commanding generals. A shock and outrage to the conscious in the inhumanity and pure evil of the German army. A story that needs to be retold -- and very well done. I would agree with the criticism that the battle maps were not helpful and could have been done better.

This is, without question, the absolute worst nightmare rendition of of World war two history ever submitted for either cogent research, or, descriptive prose.This book is the absolute nadir of describing any history of battle ever written. I read every page of the disorganized drivel I just paid for, with hopes the author would eventually attempt to clairify the reality of this great engagement. Sure, the author must have undertaken a Herculean effort to pile in disconnected prose, historical sequencing and sheer avoidance of cartographic references... But to what cause? Absolute obfuscation.References to battlefield charts are unfathomable. Don't waste a penny of your money, or, a minute of your time. It's simply an awful disservice to a heroic loss

The author always manages to take us inside the minds of the privates and the generals. His research is impeccable... especially the pain and suffering among the Dutch People. An amazing book!!

In mid-September 1944, the Allies launched a bold plan in hopes of ending the war in Europe by Christmas. Utilizing both airborne and land forces, the plan was to capture the bridges over the Rhine and then sweep directly into Germany.The plan was bold, but in the end, it proved to be foolhardy, for the Germans had several divisions in the area. To make matters worse, the British XXX corps never completed their objective; to relieve the paratroopers who jumped into Arnhem. Dysfunction was the rule of the day, and eventually, the Allies were forced to cut their losses and get out while they still could."The Battle of Arnhem" is a very good book about one of the classic Allied blunders of the war. Author Antony Beevor has written a compelling narrative about the plans and execution of the battle, from the Allied blunders to the German triumph. He also describes the terrible plight of the Dutch civilians who were nearly starved to death.I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the European theater of World War II. Many know this battle as "A Bridge Too Far", but it was much more than that; it was the Allies' attempt to end the war early. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way.

I much enjoyed reading this account of Operation Market Garden. It was an event I was already familiar with as I had read other accounts. I lost a lot of respect for General Montgomery, however. His idea of concentrating allied efforts to, in his view, win the war by charging into Germany via crossing the Rhine and heading to Berlin was wrong. He was a thorn in Ike's side and should have been replaced.

i purchased this book when i was wanting to learn about computers extensively. i am writing this review almost a year after purchasing this book. it has indeed helped me A TON. i was wanting to get this book due to the fact that it was a 9-in-1 book that talked about many different subjects relating to computers. i also was happy that i did not have to buy several books just to learn about one thing. i use it now as a reference book in case i forget something or want to confirm something. overall, i am VERY happy that i have purchased this book, and would recommend it to anybody wanting to have a reference book for computers, or someone just starting to learn about computers.

This could be a great book but it seriously needs updating.

I haven't finished the whole book yet but I really like it so far. The only drawback for me that I can see is that it is for Windows 8 and my system uses Windows 7. Other than that I really do like this book and have learned a lot so far.

I returned the item. it wasn't what I expected.

As a Christian college professor teaching our general education capstone course, I help guide my students, who mostly come from non-denominational church backgrounds, through the process of thinking about how their faith tradition might shape their approach to living out their faith in the public sphere. The instructional team provides some examples of richly developed theologies such as the Reformed tradition, Catholic Social Teaching, and others from which the students are called to identify their own approach. As their instructor I have tried to model my personal background and understanding and this has led me to explore my own religious upbringing in what I can now identify as the Pietist tradition. Gerhrz’ and Pattie’s, The Pietist Option: Hope for the Renewal of Christianity, explores the impulses found in the Pietist practices and writings of the past and then suggest ways to embody them in our contemporary setting. Pietism is known for the drive to develop a deep and meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ as opposed to the “dead orthodoxy” of mere religion or biblical knowledge. But it is less well known for its commitment to the development of the body of the church as a community of believers who are motivated by that relationship to seek unity among Christians, to desire lives and communities to be transformed in the power of Jesus, and to expect that God “will continue to break into the world in unexpected ways, bringing new life where otherwise there is death.” (pp. 8) This happens when believers make a conscious choice (to select the option) to respond fully to the grace of God and let the Spirit guide their transformation. The Pietist Option is choosing a life and walk with Jesus not merely beliefs about him. As with the original pietists, the authors of The Pietist Option, identify areas where Christians and the church of the 21st Century fail to live up to the biblical calling. Then they lay out six proposals to renew individuals, the church and the world. Three of these resonated strongly with me. First, in chapter three, there was the call to approach the Word of God as an altar of transformation rather than a source of information or policy. While the latter is not unimportant, the former is what sustains us in both the difficult times but also in the mundane when we are most prone to wander from faithfulness. I also took notice of chapter five’s emphasis on Christianity as Life emphasizing a faith that engages the head, heart, and hands. I primarily teach science students and when asked to identify where their science studies overlap their faith, they tend to reach only for doctrinal statements or questions of origins. But I continue to push them to see their discipline as a source for understanding the physical needs and concerns of the material world (head), as an area of brokenness that needs redemption like the rest of society (heart), and as a potential set of solutions to health care, climate change, loss of species and other scientific issues (hands). I seek to help them understand that their disciplinary studies are part of equipping them for their life in service to God. This leads directly to chapter seven on Whole-Person, Whole-Life Formation which reflects the mission and vision statements of my own institution that seeks to “Shape Lives to Shape the World.” Again, the starting point is Jesus and a relationship with him which then leads to transforming lives and developing Christ-followers to bring healing and redemption to the community of faith and then to the whole world. Overall, I was most struck by the positive nature of the book as articulated in the Pietist impulse toward the belief in “hope for better times.” Traditional and social media both tend to highlight how things are going wrong, especially in today’s political climate. Christian writers are often indistinguishable from others in this way. But we cannot forget that the Kingdom of God has already begun. God is always on the move, bringing the world towards redemption and restoration. The church’s call is to be the witness and agent of the Spirit’s actions. The Pietist Option is to humbly choose to walk with Jesus and let him bring about transformation in ourselves, our churches, and through them, the world.

At first blush, it appears that The Pietist Option was written in response to a popular book by Rod Dreher entitled, The Benedict Option. But that sells the book far too short. After a careful reading, I don’t recall the authors ever mentioning Dreher’s book at all. The Benedict Option, for those who are unfamiliar, is a proposed approach to Christian life in the 21st century, a withdrawal into local Christian communities and away from the culture wars and the “barbarians at the gate”, so to speak, in order to more intentionally form deeply Christian people. It is, in sense, an adapted monasticism for the 21st century.While the authors spend a brief time in the “bad news” of why a book like this is needed, the overwhelming majority of the book is focused on moving forward, and they do so by drawing on the Pietist movement of the late 17th century. Pattie and Gehrz make a hopeful and compelling case not for opting out of culture, but for opting in - choosing to live deeply Christian lives through which we engage culture in the transformative power of resurrection, the Holy Spirit, and faith. To do so, the authors draw from the form and content of a formative document for Pietists written in 1675, Philipp Jacob Spener’s Pia Desideria.Spener’s Desideria laid out his hopes (the title translates as Pious Desires) for Pietists in six proposals for renewal. The authors take these six proposals and adapt them to current reality, the state of society and the state of the Church. Over the course of the book the authors consider the importance of the word of God, the priesthood of all believers, a living faith in which love of God and love of neighbor are paramount, the importance of unity and peace with Christians from other theological traditions, the call for our education to be transformational in addition to informational, and the proclamation of the good news of God’s love in word and deed. Each of these is drawn from Spener, then broadened and, where fitting, adapted to speak to our culture and day.I found the book refreshing and hopeful. In a day when division is the name of the game and the possibilities of real conversation (to say nothing of healing and reconciliation) seem beyond the pale of current societal, political, and ecclesiastical realities, The Pietist Option reminded me of my own denominational heritage and gave me hope for a better way forward. As Gehrz and Pattie make their case, they throw light and energy on a solid framework for what they refer to as their “hope for better days.”For followers of Christ looking for a way forward to “better days,” The Pietist Option is a much needed primer on the true nature of Pietism and its important contributions to Church History and our future, as well. The authors draw deeply from the well of their own ecclesiastical history and experience, providing ample examples and inspiration for how these proposals might play out in our day. If you are at all interested in what Pietism has to say to us today and how such a revival might transform the way followers of Jesus interact with one another and our world, then I encourage to read The Pietist Option. It is very accessible, highly readable, and thought-provoking.If I have any “criticisms" of the book, I can think of only one: I wish it had been longer! I would love to read even more about how Pietism might impact our lives and relationships in various ways. But perhaps that is to ask too much. For the authors never intend to answer all of our questions. They set out to prompt the reader to reconsider our way in the world and in mission, and this they have done quite well.

This little book is a treasure. I thought it would be reflections by Father Groeschel, but it is a book compiled by him of the prayers written by some of the saints. All of them are useful for quieting the soul for reflection.

I was very disappointed in this book because I generally love Fr. Benedict's writings, but this is too scattered, too pedantic, and too dry for me.

I saw a copy in our chapel and liked the prayers. They say how I feel, so I bought my own copy.

I have always had difficulty going to Adoration, but this book gives me a guide - a road map, if you will - of what I should be doing and prayers that I can say. I am using it weekly instead of daily, and it is so wonderful that my children are even asking to go to Adoration with me to say the prayers and read the passages.

Good and awesome prayers reminded me of the old church where I grew-up! Never found another place like it. Loved it.

I had a few second thoughts about buying this book knowing that all the content was available on line. After thinking about it for a while I decided to get it. In order to see what is available on line I need to search for it and not knowing what to search for won't get me to the content anytime soon.Although I believe this book will definitely get the beginner up to speed quickly, advanced users will not benefit as much. I was the subject matter expert for the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Learning Snacks so I had to learn the IDE extensively. I therefore did not learn very much from the material. I can say however, that this book's material is perfect for those who don't have the time to play with VS to learn all the little productivity tips this book offers.The book has a 254 page appendix available for download. Although this is great additional material, I would have preferred it be included in the book. I found the little key at the beginning of each tip a waste of paper and would have rather seen this content included.I really feel that beginners should definitely read this book, mid-level developers will learn plenty of new things, but those who live and breathe Visual Studio won't learn as much.The content covers everything I can think of that a developer should know who makes their living in Visual Studio.

I learned dozens of ways to speed up my development time, I lost count before the end of the second chapter!"Coding Faster" has a great level of detail, yet is still very approachable. (my 9 year old just started reading it because she loves shortcuts). One of my favorite features is the "Understanding ____" topics. Zain Naboulsi did an excellent job of capturing not just how the tools work, but how you should use them.Beginners will learn so many important topics and tips. Intermediates and Experts will find numerous ways to work even faster (and who doesn't want to work faster?)!!!I highly recommend this book to anyone who uses Visual Studio!

Love it...im not much into VBA but this works...i usually do actionscript and some macros...this is set into plain language i understand
