I live in Jackie Speier's district, so I bought this as soon as I saw her on the Today show. Her story is incredible: she has survived so much tragedy and heartbreak, including the Jonestown massacre, and survived to be a truly inspiring public servant. This is a quick and lively read, I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend this book - it will restore your faith in politics.

Jackie Speier is an American Congresswoman from Northern California. She was born, bred and raised there. With a strong interest in politics at a young age, she became an assistant to Congressman Leo Ryan. She accompanied him on a trip to Guyana to investigate Jonestown in November 1978. Jackie returned home on a stretcher. She survived the airplane shooting at Port Kaituma. Her boss and mentor, Leo Ryan, was killed along with three other journalists and a defector.Jackie recalls everything about that trip to Guyana. Leo Ryan was a man of principle and courage to investigate the People's Temple and Jonestown. He genuinely cared about people in general.Jackie recounts coming home; survival and life afterwards. She writes about her personal and professional career in politics. Jackie Speier has been elected and served as Congress representative from Leo Ryan's district. The book covers Jonestown but not in depth. After she was shot five times, she recovered and survived. She would rebuild her life and pursued a successful political career. She has lost a husband while pregnant with her daughter. She would remarry and represent Leo Ryan's district in Congress. Jackie has had a remarkable life. She is truly fearless.

Powerfully honest, thoughtful, inspiring and poignant. If you want or need inspiration to motivate action in facing and overcoming challenges this book is for you! Generosity of spirit shines throughout.

In the late 1960's Jackie Speier (pronounced SPEAR) began working on weekends, summers and after school as a volunteer in the re-election campaign of California politician Leo Ryan, as well as volunteering with the American Red Cross while she was still in high school. She continued working as an aide for and with Ryan through college and law school, taking on a paycheck and more and more complex projects. After law school, she took a position as Ryan's legislative council and moved to DC.On November 14th, 1978 Jackie accompanied Ryan along with several of his aides, newsmedia and concerned family members of Jones' followers as they flew to Guyana to assess the situation in Jonestown and, if needed, to rescue those trying to escape the influence of cult leader Jim Jones and his People's Temple in Jonestown, Guyana. Things did not go as planned. On November 18th as they began gearing up to leave Guyana with a growing crowd of cultists wanting to return to the US, Ryan was shot and killed on the airport runway with over forty bullets in his body. Jackie took five. Jonestown became one of the most tragic genocides in modern times, with over 900 dead. And Jackie, who lay on the tarmac at the airport for over 20 hours before rescue, had an unthinkable battle to face, with nerve damage to her right arm and hand, a chunk missing from her right leg, and gangrene in all five of her wounds. After skin grafts and several surgeries, she spent weeks in the hospital and had lots of time to decide where her future lay. And it lay in serving the public, and never again becoming a victim. She first served in the California State Assembly before following in the footsteps of Congressman Ryan. She is still working in Congress, representing California Congressional District 14 and women everywhere.Jackie Speier has a loud voice in Washington DC. She fights, undaunted, for women's rights, consumer safety, and personal privacy. She brings to DC her varied life experiences. Jackie is a wife, a mother, a widow, a woman who has had to face personal adversity. She comes from a long line of strong women. On her mother's side she is the great granddaughter of victim's of the Armenian genocide, her mother was born in California the third of six children of immigrant Armenians. Her father flew in World War II for Germany, trekked across Russia and worked as a medic in China before landing in San Francisco and then bringing his mother over from Shanghai, where his parents - Catholic mother, Jewish father - had fled at the outbreak of WWII, to California. Grandmother Speier was Jackie's lodestone. As the daughter of California residents who pulled themselves up by their bootstraps into the middle class, she is an American. And she speaks forcefully and with great heart for all women in America.I received a free electronic copy of this memoir from Netgalley, Jackie Speier, and Little A Publishers in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

I thought I knew a bit about Jackie Speier before reading this memoir, but WOW! Was I ever wrong! Her well-told tale of courage and determination has put her in a category all her own as far as I am concerned. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone with her background and her passion working in Washington. I am now a big fan. What a story!

Having lived in Northern California for many years (moving to the Bay Area just after the massacre in Guyana and moving away in 2007), I was familiar with Jackie Speier's name and a little of her background. This book filled in the gaps and increased my admiration of her a thousand times. She is so courageous and committed to a life of service to her community and her country. Everyone she represents should be proud and grateful to have her in their corner. She is a tireless fighter for so many worthwhile causes and I admire her so much. Jackie Speier for President!

So glad I read this book. She is a very amazing woman. Her account of the Jonestown massacre/suicide has helped me understand what actually happened back then. A great read and plan to give as gifts this year.

What a story the author has here. And it is a true story. What an adventure. She had been through Hell and back with the nightmare with Congressman Ryan and crew in Jonestown, she survived, they didn't. And just the events of her life were tragic, then uplifting, then tragic again, and she always comes through not only as a survivor but a mentor to all of us. Amazing story!

From the Back Cover

Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, Second Edition is intended to teach residents the principles of succinct and precise operative dictations for a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. Designed as a portable resource, the book provides typical dictations to guide the resident. Comprised of 226 procedures, this new edition comprises the majority of procedures commonly performed by general and vascular surgeons. For each procedure, a list of common indications is given. This list covers 95% of the situations in which a particular procedure will be used. A list of essential steps follows. These can be used to mentally rehearse the procedure before it is performed. The next heading, Note these technical variations, introduces a list that is intended to prompt the surgeon for particular things to note and dictate within the template. A list of possible complications that are typically associated with that particular surgical procedure follows. Finally, a template operative dictation is provided. Common opening and terminating sequences (for example, how to enter and close the abdomen) in all laparotomy dictations are included. The volume has two primary objectives. First, it is designed to serve as a source of model operative dictations that may be individualized and used as templates. Second, it is intended as an aide-memoir, giving the surgeon a short list of pertinent information about each procedure. Ample space is provided to allow each surgeon to add notes. By reviewing this introductory material before scrubbing on a procedure, the trainee surgeon will enter the operating room better prepared to participate actively and to learn as much as possible. At the end of training, this book, with the notes accumulated by the resident, will serve as an invaluable review resource analogous to the individualized notebooks many surgeons keep. Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, Second Edition is intended for practicing surgeons, who may modify each template to reflect their own individual practice. It also serves as a concise reminder of essential steps in those operations that may be only rarely performed.

From the Back Cover

The true story of how a group of chefs fed hundreds of thousands of hungry Americans after Hurricane Maria and touched the hearts of many moreChef José Andrés arrived in Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. The economy was destroyed and for most people there was no clean water, no food, no power, no gas, and no way to communicate with the outside world.Andrés addressed the humanitarian crisis the only way he knew how: by feeding people, one hot meal at a time. From serving sancocho with his friend José Enrique at Enrique’s ravaged restaurant in San Juan to eventually cooking 100,000 meals a day at more than a dozen kitchens across the island, Andrés and his team fed hundreds of thousands of people. At the same time, they also confronted a crisis with deep roots, as well as the broken and wasteful system that helps keep some of the biggest charities and NGOs in business.Based on Andrés’s insider’s take as well as on meetings, messages, and conversations he had while in Puerto Rico, We Fed an Island movingly describes how a network of community kitchens activated real change and tells an extraordinary story of hope in the face of disasters both natural and man-made, offering suggestions for how to address a crisis like this in the future.

The preceding review by B. Dixon is comprehensive and ably covers all the bases, so this is just an addendum. For those who are not typical readers of nonfiction, this is immensely readable. I suspect chef Andres is a straight-talker and this text echoes his style. Also, one can see the hand of co-author journalist Wolffe, in particular the challenge it must have been to collect all the facts, quotes, stories, and background information, and then organize them into a timeline along with an interesting narrative. Finally, as Andres notes, the simple desire to help others was the genesis of the idea to feed the hungry, and the efforts by all chronicled in this book are representative of the best that Americans offer consistently under crisis conditions. Some folks traveled to Puerto Rico, many were already based there, most were born and raised there. The supply chain, fuel, coordination, transport, refrigeration, facilities, communication – all were critical elements to be managed and executed. The bulk of the daily cooking of sancocho (stew) and making sandwiches was carried out by local chefs and volunteers. To prepare these 3 million meals took a lot of time and energy under challenging conditions, but they did it.

The Washington Post just reviewed this book and found it "riveting." The text of Tim Carman's review is below, but I recommend you search for the original yourself -- it includes lots of photos and links that are also valuable. With “We Fed an Island,” chef-and-restaurateur-turned-relief worker José Andrés doesn’t just tell the story about how he and a fleet of volunteers cooked millions of meals for the Americans left adrift on Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. He exposes what he views as an outdated top-down, para-military-type model of disaster relief that proved woefully ineffective on an island knocked flat by the Category 4 hurricane.Andrés also points plenty of fingers. At President Trump. At the Federal Emergency Management Agency. At the American Red Cross. At Puerto Rican politicians who let their own people down. No one is spared Andrés’s critical eye, including the chef himself.Although it contains moments of real pathos, the book is not a saccharine, self-serving tribute to the work of thousands of chefs, line cooks, food truck operators and other volunteers who heeded the call to help from Andrés’s nonprofit organization, World Central Kitchen. It’s a manifesto asking governments and nonprofit groups to rethink the way they feed people after a natural disaster.Co-written by Richard Wolffe, a veteran journalist who has collaborated with Andrés on a pair of cookbooks, “We Fed an Island” is as close to a page-turner as current-affairs nonfiction gets. There are good guys and bad guys. There are obstacles faced and obstacles overcome. There are winners and losers. There is an outrage on virtually every page. My advance copy of the book is so full of dog-eared pages, highlighted passages and marginalia that it looks like a scholar’s copy of Shakespeare’s collected plays. In “We Fed an Island,” José Andrés criticizes the U.S. government and the American Red Cross. (Ecco) “It was already clear to me that this was a deadly serious humanitarian crisis,” Andrés writes about his first days on the island, right around the time Trump told reporters that his administration had received “tremendous reviews” for its response on Puerto Rico.“It was also an untold disaster, hidden from view and lied about by our public officials,” Andrés continues. “My mission was to help my fellow American citizens, and to tell their story to a world that was living in the dark.”Puerto Ricans were living on the edge even before Maria hit the island, and Andrés and Wolffe make sure to spell it out. They lay out the yawning inequalities between Americans on the mainland and those on Puerto Rico: The lack of voting rights, the devastating effects of the Jones Act of 1920 on the island’s economy and the substandard benefits given to those living below the poverty line. They make the case that Puerto Rico is, if not a de facto colony, then at least a territory full of second-class citizens. When Maria struck the island last September, it laid bare many of the problems affecting Puerto Rico: The crumbling infrastructure that left folks without running water and electricity for weeks; the huge number of impoverished residents whose EBT cards (a kind of social assistance credit card) wouldn’t work without an Internet connection; and an entire economy crippled by debt. Just as important, the storm seemed to reveal an indifference from the Trump administration, as if all but confirming the island’s second-class status. As the authors point out, Trump spent the first weekend after Maria mostly at his private New Jersey golf club, fulminating about Kim Jong Un and the National Football League.Andrés arrived on one of the first commercial flights to Puerto Rico, landing in San Juan on Sept. 25, five days after Maria made landfall. It was the same day that the first Trump administration officials visited the island. The chef saw a humanitarian crisis and stayed to help. FEMA administrator William “Brock” Long and Tom Bossert, a White House homeland security adviser, stayed the day and returned to Washington to brief the president.“My original plan was to cook maybe ten thousand meals a day for five days, and then return home,” Andrés writes.Instead, Andrés and the thousands of volunteers who composed Chefs for Puerto Rico remained for months, preparing and delivering more than 3 million meals to every part of the island. They didn’t wait for permission from FEMA. They didn’t even wait for FEMA funding (though funding eventually came from the agency). They just started activating restaurants, churches, food trucks and, eventually, the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan. They quickly scaled up their production of sandwiches, paellas, stews and, really, anything that would provide more comfort than the field rations known as Meals Ready to Eat, or MREs, the food often passed out after disasters. Under certain conditions, MREs have a shelf life of five years.“I like to say that a hot meal is more than just food,” Andrés writes. “It’s a plate of hope. An MRE is almost hopeless.”These grass-roots culinary efforts didn’t always sit well with administration officials or with executives at hidebound charities, in part because Andrés was no diplomat. He trolled Trump on Twitter over the situation on Puerto Rico. He badgered FEMA for large contracts to ramp up production to feed even more hungry citizens. He infamously told Time magazine that the “American government has failed” in Puerto Rico. A chef used to fast-moving kitchens, Andrés had zero patience for slow-footed bureaucracy, especially in a time of crisis. In the book, Andrés and Wolffe save their most scathing criticism for the American Red Cross, the multibillion-dollar charity with the federal charter “to maintain a system of domestic and international disaster relief.” In a chapter titled “Seeing Red,” the authors use the organization’s own words and statistics against it. Of the more than $65 million raised to help the victims of Maria, the Red Cross spent only $30 million on emergency relief and recovery efforts, they write. “The Red Cross generously gave themselves 9 percent of that leftover cash — or $3.2 million — for their own general management costs,” they add.If Andrés is tough on charities and the administration for their response in Puerto Rico — he writes Trump didn’t earn the “10” rating that the president gave himself — the chef is equally hard on himself. “And I certainly wouldn’t give myself anything more than a five for my own, because there was so much more we needed to do. We failed to reach so many people who needed so much help.”After dealing with so much red tape and mismanagement (remember the disastrous $156 million contract that FEMA awarded to a small, inexperienced company to prepare 30 million hot meals?), Andrés wants the government and nonprofit groups to rethink the way they handle food after a large-scale natural disaster. He wants them to drop the authoritarian, top-down style and embrace the chaos inherent in crisis. Work with available local resources, whether residents or idle restaurants and schools. Give people the authority and the means to help themselves. Stimulate the local economy.“What we did was embrace complexity every single second,” Andrés writes. “Not planning, not meeting, just improvising. The old school wants you to plan, but we needed to feed the people.”Andrés and World Central Kitchen have embraced complexity. An organization not originally designed as a food relief organization, WCK has, in the aftermath of Puerto Rico, sent chefs to Hawaii, Guatemala, Indonesia and other locales to feed locals in need. In fact, Andrés is donating 100 percent of his net proceeds from “We Fed an Island” to World Central Kitchen, which will help continue its work to feed those who can’t feed themselves when disaster strikes. The money might even help keep a promise that Andrés made to a 10-year-old volunteer named Lola. The daughter of a food truck operator in San Juan, Lola worked every day to make sandwiches, disregarding Andrés’s pleas to take a break. “I was so impressed with her,” he writes in the book, “I promised I would pay for her college education.”It’s a promise, Andrés told me, that he won’t forget.

After living through hurricane Maria and the harrowing months that followed, I tried to avoid reading any more stories about what happened. It just brought everything back. However, when I came upon this book I decided to buy it as a gift for my son, who had worked as a volunteer at José Andrés' World Central Kitchen at El Choliseo after the hurricane. I began to read it before giving it to him … and could not put it down! This book tells the true story of what actually happened. What Chef José Andrés accomplished was extraordinary, but the story behind it is even more impressive. It is a story of sheer willpower, against insurmountable odds, of making contact with the people, of partnering with the many wonderful chefs we have in PR, with our local producers and our local resources. It exposes the inefficiency of red tape and bureaucracy in the face of a natural disaster. The authors could not have told it better. They mince no words and structured the book in a way that makes for a captivating read.It is a must read for anyone who likes a good story, who is interested in disaster relief, or is in the potential path of a natural disaster. Certainly, it is a must read for anyone who lived through hurricane Maria. It is a story that HAD to be told. This book also gives us the opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to José Andrés and to all those who came to help, to our relatives, to our friends and our friends' friends , who showed up from afar in more ways than one.¡GRACIAS, José Andrés!

Get the day to day reality of the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastating path across Puerto Rico. Chef Andres reports from his position of persistence and passion to feed hot meals to people in need without reliable water, power or fuel. His witness to the basic corruption and distance of large institutions is unsurprising and with good lessons to be learned.

Heartbreaking yet inspiring story of the power of a good meal during a dreadful crisis. Chef Jose ignored the word NO and fed 3 million meals with an army of volunteers. Whilst the NGO’s like Red Cross and government bodies like FEMA did so very little. In America . NOT a third world country, AMERICA ! If Jose could use his experience to retrain not for profits , imagine what a difference it would make. Eye opening.

Chef Andreas was an extraordinary man before Hurricane Maria. His story as told in this book makes him revolutionary. Amazing book and very relevant.

This book does a good job of covering the proper use of flash equipment both in the studio and in the field. If you choose to buy this book, be aware that a lot of the book is about studio lighting, so if you don't do or plan to do any studio work these parts of the book will be less valuable to you. There's enough about in-the-field lighting to be useful to you if you don't do studio work.If you study (and not just read) this book and endeavor to apply the ideas the author presents (and you're willing to do a lot of trial-and-error effort) you'll get a good grounding in how to use a flash, or multiple flashes, to create beautifully lit photographs. There are many recommendations on equipment to use and equipment not to use and these discussions are quite helpful. The good news here is that a good flash setup can be put together without breaking the bank. The reader will have to decide which equipment is a good fit for his or her photographic needs. That said, there are a few oddities in the book...On page 48 there's an odd and confusing discussion about adjusting the brightness of the flash by changing the flash power (no doubt about this) and by changing the f stop, which, of course changes the brightness of the flash and of the entire image. Also, there is a discussion about how to balance flash illumination and background illumination beginning on page 88, and another discussion of the same subject that begins on page 172. These discussions are for all intents and purposes the same. Good ideas, though.I recommend this book to the user who is willing to spend some time understanding and trying the techniques described.

This is an excellent reference for flash photography that addresses several typical situations. It provides several equipment options that will meet your budget. The only recommendation would be the addition of a one page checklist for each situation. This would be a quick reference for setup and also a quick reference for addressing specific issues.

Scott is probably the most prolific writer of our time on the subject of photography and Adobe Photoshop. He knocks out another winner in this new book which is an outstanding approach to flash photography that will change the way most enthusiasts approach lighting. Interesting, witty and an easy read for photographers at any level. Highly recommended!!!

I was reluctant to buy this after reading Scott's other flash book which really didn't apply to us little folks, but this hits the mark perfectly for speedlight users. Page by page you will improve your technique with off camera flash without needing a huge studio space. Instructions are to the point. Great job Scott, bad intro's and all:)

We should start with aperture 5.6 and exposer time 1/125... Sounds good, still. is not working for most circumstances. The best photographs (from National Geographic) like Joel Sartore, Bob Krist recommend choose on your camera 1 to 2 stops down of the ambient light... otherwise, we get that awful shadows when we use flashes... Don't make raccoon eyes (Joel Sartore) this means we go with our flashlight on the height of the eyes and not that stupid approach 45 degrees down from above the head because we need then a reflector or a second flashlight from the bottom up. Joel Sartore has for this case one softbox with a flashlight in one hand and shooting with the other hand... Or do you have always an assistant? And the biggest joke is when he recommends his configuration with 3 flashlights.. 2 flashlights left and right from the behind to middle and then one flashlight 45 down from above the head... And even his pictures from that configuration look awful... It is easier to write a book than to do awesome photographs....

If you aren't 100 percent confident with using your flash set up, then you need this book. Scott could explain anything technical and make it easy. Really. The book is a delight to read and it he makes it all make sense. His repetition helps it sink in, and his easy going style and humor makes it a joy to read. Probably the best how to book I ever purchased. Just get it.

Don't get me wrong, there is some useful advice in this book. However, it is mixed in with a great deal of useless blathering and many pages of set up for insipid "jokes." Most of the photographs are completely unnecessary, and there is a lot of information missing (like how to actually set up your light stands, attach items, etc. The author recommends a large number of items to buy, and yet includes on vague reasons as to why you should purchase these items, and what to use them for if one does.If you took out the pointless stuff, this book would be a pamphlet. If you can find a used copy for about $5, go ahead and pick it up. It is not worth anything close to the cover price.

The Flash Book is Scott Kelby at his best! In the past couple of years I have become more interested in portraiture and using multiple off-camera flashes. There is no shortage of equipment for this purpose, or recommendations on how to use it. Reading more advanced texts have led to confusion rather than clarity, but Scott Kelby's latest book has helped to put it all in perspective for me.It is written in layman's language, and includes lots of practical advice without overloading the non-technical reader. I will use the information provided in this book to make more informed choices about how to use the equipment I already own, as well as what to get next to achieve my flash photography ambitions. It is also a good foundation that enables you to easy into more technical tomes such as Syl Arena's excellent books on flash.I enjoyed the book tremendously. A friend of mine, a retired photographer, also bought the book on my recommendation but was driven to distraction by Scott Kelby's off-beat and humorous writing style. I enjoy the lighthearted style, but my friend clearly did not.Thoroughly recommended for photographers of any skill level who are still a little intimidated by their flashes.
