About the Author

Stephen Quiller graduated from Colorado State University and has been painting full-time in water media since 1972. His paintings are represented in many corporate, public, and private collections nationwide. Quiller has produced six books published by Watson-Guptill: With Barbara Whipple he coauthored Water Media Techniques and Water Media: Processes and Possibilities; Color Choices; Acrylic Painting Techniques; Painter's Guide to Color; and Water Media Painting with Stephen Quiller. Quiller conducts artist workshops throughout North America each year, and he has made a number of DVDs on water media and color, produced by Crystal Productions. He lives with his wife, Marta, and their two children, Christopher and Allison, in Creede, Colorado. His work is available at the Quiller Gallery in Creede and at the Mission Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.

Mr. Quiller is THE Color Instructor ! If you truly want to improve your painting & REALLY understand color , THIS is THE book for you ! I am now working on my own extrapolation of color theory involving the inversion of the Warms project / Cools recede model ! I KNOW by experience that it IS in FACT possible to make cools PROJECT because I've DONE so! I just didn't realize or understand at the time HOW I'd accomplished it ! With Mr. Quiller's help, I now believe I can accomplish this with full control & comprehension of what is happening ! My own big thesis has always been upon color TEMPERATURE ! Now, I am experimenting with that further to extrapolate into co9lor temperature based upon INTENSITY ! Watch my Facebook page for details ! I don't only love this book. I'm thrilled with it. I have not had a lot of practice mixing media other than watercolor pencils and watercolor paint. I love reading about his use of acrylic and watercolor, gouache and casein. I had no idea until I read this book how Quiller gets some of his effects. This is not a beginner book for someone who hasn't painted, and it may not be a book for someone who doesn't care for Quiller's work, but if you want to learn how to use different waterbased media in one painting, you will enjoy this book.

As a long time watercolor artist, I found so much great information in this book. Quiller has mastered acrylic, gouache and watercolor and shows his unique vision and method of application with clear instructions and demonstrations. If you are looking for the next steps beyond traditional transparent watercolor, this book is informative and inspirational. I'm buying all his books, and I didn't think there was much more I could learn from a water media book!

This book is a wonderful overview of watermedia , particularly for artists with a basic knowledge of (not necessarily skill with!) watercolor painting. Stephen Quiller's open, friendly personality radiates from every page. His extensive knowledge of watermedia is shared as if you are there with him, looking at his work as he explains the qualities of the paint and the surfaces he used. He discusses tools and how to use them, color, composition, underpainting and other basics as if talking to a fellow artist, with plenty of tips he's found useful in his extensive career. He develops a discussion of mixed media and one chapter discusses topics from en plein air painting to painting large and how to display the finished work. Throughout the book he references works from other watercolor masters he considers his mentors. Although he talks about the products bearing his name this is not one of those "paint my way with my products or else" books. Rather, the rationale for his choices is explained and alternatives explored. Stephen Quiller never talks down to his audience and there's no trace of the "you'll never be able to paint as well as this" undertone found in many famous name books. I found the chapter on composition to be one of the best discussions of this topic I've heard - sorry, seen! Buy this book and you can't help but share Stephen Quiller's enthusiasm for watermedia painting!

Great author and plain language. At times, the style and his writing feel like poetry: even if you have never dealt with art, he makes you passionate about it. Text is a guide on how to paint using watercolour, acrylic, gouache and casein. From the title one understands that oil paint is not covered. Highly recommended. I hope it becomes a best seller.

Stephen Quiller loves to teach, and I love to learn from artists like him. I not only like his work; I respect his ability and willingness to convey what he has learned to me, an amateur. When I evaluate an exhibition, it is very hard to keep his work out of the top five. This book takes me where I want to go!

Steven Quiller is a master colorist. His instruction regarding accurate complementary colors creates vibrant, clear paint mixtures. He has also researched paint manufacturers and recommends the strongest and purest water colors available. His many examples of color mixtures, as well as samples of his artwork , are valuable teaching tools for the artist, whether amateur or professional.

Stephen Quiller in this book has a little for everybody. I am a acrylic painter at present and plan to do some watercolor in the future. I really like his approch to these things and his knowledge of color. I also bought his color wheel which I use all of the time. If you are looking for a book that will give you a broad overview of Water Media this is the book for you. I think it inspires me to try something new and gives me ideas to do it. This book truly is brilliant! I have MANY cookbooks, and several bread cookbooks, but this one is truly unique. First of all, I read it cover to cover, something I’ve NEVER done with a cookbook before. And second, the book is in order from easy recipes to get the basics, and gets increasingly more difficult. And one of the philosophies of the book is that YOU can make all of your favorite breads at home, with the proper skills. Btw, I’m an American, and I find it VERY easy to decipher the ingredients (ie. strong flour = bread flour, etc.—just google things), and get a scale. You will soon hate Americans love of measuring cups when you see what it’s like to not need them. The book is funny, straight forward, and a delight! Recipes are pretty amazing too!

I have never given a five star review on any book, but Brilliant Bread by James Morton deserves it! What I enjoy about the book, is that it is well organized and well written. He takes you on a journey of bread making from simpler, easy recipes, to the more complex ones, with detailed explanations, so you have a better understanding of the science behind the process. All the extra details are jovially written which is a joy to read.Brilliant Bread has a clean layout and is filled with many photos that compliment the recipes nicely. I love how each recipe starts with the "Time spent in kitchen" and "time taken altogether" to make each recipe, it gives you an accurate idea of how much time you needed to spend at minimum before starting.I have the Kindle version of the book because I couldn't wait to start baking and will no doubt get the printed version later on. I am glad I got the Kindle version, as I always have the recipes if I am on the go. The digital version of this book is excellent. I read it on my computer, iPad, Kindle and mobile phone with ease. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn how to bake bread, this is the best book to have. I have tried many different recipes for scones, white bread, pita breads, focaccia and pizza dough, and none beat James' recipes. Weighing your ingredients like he says, really makes all the difference but not only that, the whole process he uses is fool proof.Five stars for me and I look forward to his next book and who knows, with a video or two?

Great book for someone looking to easy to moderate level bread and beginners. Makes every effort to cut past all the pretentious BS found in most books such as these.

This is the best book on bread of my enormous collection. His sharing of the most minute details would be so helpful for beginners. We've been a fan since GBBO, thought he should have won, and loved his self-confident personality. Buy this book, it's even better than PH's!

Best book on bread making I've ever seen. It's not only brilliant on bread making - very clear, concise instructions, putting in much needed details you rarely see - but an excellent read. Read it cover to cover. Something I've never done with a cook book before!
