If you grew up like I did in the 1970s greater New York metro area, you will want to read Richard Neer's memoir of life at WNEW-FM during its hard-rock heyday just for the blasts of nostalgic recognition. Radio handles like "Rosko", "Scottso", and "The Nightbird" become vivid personalities, and you are reconnected to a time when people anxiously awaited the latest Moody Blues LP. But even without such attachments going in, you will find "FM" a pretty absorbing read on many levels.First, there's the gossipy behind-the-scenes aspect, of discovering who didn't get along with whom among a group of high-profile radio disc jockeys to whom the big shots of the day, like Led Zeppelin and Elton John, came a-calling. They called WNEW the place "where rock lives" for a reason.Then there's the aspect of WNEW-FM's place as an oasis of free-form radio while the medium was changing all around them, a period that ran roughly from just before Neer's arrival as a weekend jock in 1971 to the murder of John Lennon in 1980. The money still came in for a while after that, but as Neer writes, the dream was over.Finally, there's the fact Neer is a sensible, candid observer of all around him, who can describe lovingly and at some length everything from his first broadcasting experience on college radio to his initial trepidation when cornered by Jonathan Schwartz, a velvet-throated rock-jock mainstay at the time. With a voice like that, Neer thought, Schwartz had to be gay."I would learn later that my fears were completely unfounded, and that Jonno went through women like [fellow WNEW legend Scott] Muni went through scotch."I suspect Neer and Schwartz aren't on speaking terms today, not for that so much as a hilarious anecdote he shares about Schwartz, two willing bedmates, and Schwartz's idea of mood music, his own pre-recorded voice on the radio. But Neer's loss of a Christmas card is our gain.It's like that the whole way through, Neer explaining the unsavory as well as the heroic aspects of WNEW's rise to fame. Sex and drugs, yes, though more the former than the latter, unless ego counts as a drug. That the jocks had in spades. When Alison Steele a.k.a. "The Nightbird", sensed a new female jock WNEW had hired was a threat to her domain, she got the woman fired. Schwartz eschewed the disk jockey term for one he coined himself: "Jocque du disques". For a lot of jocks, the term "free-form" meant playing whatever they wanted to, and sneering anytime the word "Arbitron" came up.They're a great bunch all the same. Neer makes clear his overall admiration for their varying personalities and what they did. It's hard not to envy Neer his "Almost-Famous" style proximity to the entire gang and the world they represented, a world that arose greenfield-like in the late 1960s from the underused hinterlands of the FM dial just as rock music became polytonal, expansive and willfully reckless. Neer even fills in the details of the wider rock/FM scene without losing his focus on WNEW.He takes sidetrips to California, where free-form programming was taken even more seriously and crashed even more spectacularly than in New York. The last 100 pages deal with WNEW after free-form's heyday ended, and are far less vital reading than the 1971-81 section, as new wave and grunge began pushing hard rock into the oldies circuit.Draggy or not, Neer finds a way to bring it all together, not in such a way as to draw in the uninitiated (his prose is solid but never immersive) but to reward the curious. Radio lovers will enjoy this deep dive into a world, still a part of many living memories, that feels a million miles away.

Richard Neer has created a great accounting of the Golden Age of progressive free form radio. While this focuses a great deal on WNEW FM where Richard worked, it gives insight to the whole genre of radio as well as sister stations such as WMMR in Philadelphia ("the radio station") as well as similar stations in LA, Cleveland, etc. If you grew up during this period listening to progressive radio its a must read to get the inside scoop on your favorite DJs and how it all evolved and devolved. I was big fan of WNEW FM growing up. Richard Neer does a nice job discussing the music and the on air personalities that made the station a must listen to in the 70's and 80's. I enjoyed Richard's description of the internal politics of the station. I remember with sadness the demise of the station when I found I could no longer listen to it in the 90's. Of course by then it was only a couple of years until I could listen to satellite radio and now stream whatever music I like.As an avid sports fan I still make it a point to listen to terrestrial radio today and Richard Neer Saturday mornings on WFAN.WNEW where rock lives!

This is really two books. One is a memoir describing Neer’s career in radio, especially at WNEW-FM. Readers who were fans of that station will enjoy hearing stories about the various DJs, and also the many top-name rock stars who bonded with the station. Some of the stories are funny, and not all are flattering.The second book is what the title suggests: an account of how rock FM radio went from free-form to corporate, eventually imploding because of clueless management. The descriptions here were more balanced than I expected. For sure, some of the key players come across as arrogant jerks, but Neer also shows some sympathy for the managers who were trying to make sense of a changing world.Overall, the book reads real well, almost like a novel. He also does a good job of weaving in what was going on at progressive rock stations in Boston, California and elsewhere.What bothered me were the many direct quotes of conversations where Neer was not present. Presumably that info came from some of the people mentioned in the Acknowledgements, but he makes no mention of the specific sources or any suggestion that those accounts might be biased. It's all stated as fact.

Julian Borger is the diplomatic editor for The Guardian. He covered the Bosnian War for the BBC andThe Guardian, and returned to the Balkans to report on the Kosovo conflict in 1999.  He has also served as The Guardian’s Middle East correspondent and its Washington bureau chief. What made this book interesting to me was that I had travelled thru the Balkans by motorcycle in June 2015 and visited many of the venues mentioned. I saw photos of Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic on the wall of a café in Gacko Republic of Srpska (Bosnia). It was akin to seeing a photo of Nazi war criminals on the wall of a bar in Bavaria. Quite disturbing. The book could use some reorganization as it jumped around quite a bit and at times seemed to assume the reader was already up to speed on important factual background. I am giving it 3 stars because I did like reading it, but it could use an update to reorganize and flesh out some of the factual background.

The Butcher’s Trail describes how, over a period of nearly two decades, war-crimes indictees were tracked down, apprehended, and transferred to The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. Julian Borger, who covered the conflict in the Western Balkans for the BBC and The Guardian, tells the story with authority and insight.Borger describes how Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte and her predecessor Louise Arbour shamed and cajoled governments into cooperating with the ICTY, noting that while Biljana Plavsic, a former leader of the Bosnian Serbs, was the only female indicted for war crimes, “the two people who did more than any other individuals to ensure the suspects were all tracked down happened to be women.” He also describes the toxic cocktail of nationalism and sexism that prompted politicians and media in Croatia and Serbia to shower Del Ponte with derogatory epithets. During the conflict the same mindset fuelled sexual violence on a horrific scale.There are other paradoxes. When German peacekeepers in Bosnia were wounded during the October 2000 arrest of a man indicted for running a wartime centre where detainees (many of them teenagers), were raped, the troops became “Germany’s first combat casualties since 1945, wounded in the course of bringing a concentration camp commander to justice.”The process of apprehending suspects in Serbia and spiriting them into Bosnia and Herzegovina to be charged and then flown onward to The Hague prefigured the practice of rendition that followed 9/11, although those involved in these operations in the Western Balkans insisted that “‘what we did there was underpinned totally in terms of legality . . . It had nothing to do with what came later’.”Borger provides excellent portraits of the principal characters. Of Slobodan Milosevic he writes: “Like many tyrants past their peak, he seemed to be the last person in the country to realize his day was done.” He gives a vivid and compelling account of the days preceding Milosevic’s downfall.Radovan Karadzic, he writes, “wove his own legend, drawing on a life immersed in a cultural tradition in which mysticism, epic storytelling, warfare, and politics were all tightly enmeshed”, yet “he cut such a plump, vainglorious figure, with his trademark vertical quiff like a gray cockatoo, that Western reporters who witnessed these performances initially had trouble taking him seriously.” A perceptive and accurate description.Despite the ICTY’s successes, the number of those who have been tried is small compared to the scale of the crimes that were committed. People in the Western Balkans have had to live for a generation in the knowledge that guilty men remain free, in many cases residing in the same communities they once terrorized.“There are too many graves containing the bones of all ethnicities for international justice to cope with, given finite resources,” Borger concludes. “Such inadequacy does not discriminate against Serbs in favor of Bosniaks, Croats and Kosovars. It discriminates against victims in favor of perpetrators.”This is a well-researched and valuable account of events that have a huge bearing on society, and not just in the Balkans. The Butcher’s Trail documents the resolute effort to bring those accused of war crimes to justice and by doing so to uphold a key principle of civil society, that crimes cannot be committed with impunity.

I now have since began reading The Butcher's Trail.That said, I can say without reservation the hunt for those indicted and those yet to be indicted, but well known to the locals commenced long before 1997/SFOR (Stabilization Force)were, but rather spring of 1996 by IFOR (Implementation Force). That said, several American military provided information on the movement of named individuals who may not have been on the indictment list, but were well known killers during the reign of seige in northeastern Bosnia, but in particular in and around Brcko to include the infamous camp on the Sava River/Brcko.The Bosnian special police in G. Rahic were often contacted about these movement for "security" reasons. Often times in the days following, that individual was taken down by Bosnian special police units..and possibly those special operators from the US or UK..but, I have no knowledge of the tier above the meetings in G. Rahic.The book provides insights that few of us knew in particular to the days "on the run" by the most infamous killers and implementer's of ethnic cleansing or genocide in Bosnia or Croatia for that matter. I used to pass the grave site of those murdered in Vukovar almost each day..and each time, I hopes that those who planned and executed those mass killings would meet those who they killed. Unfortunately, many who pulled the trigger are still leading "normal" lives somewhere in Serbia.As an American military officer with nearly 45 months in the Balkans, I find even today and with the references in the book, most Serbs simply do not believe or wish to believe their countrymen committed such horrific acts...this is most unfortunate because within the international community, this bleak reality only reinforces the division between the west and many of those in Serbia. And, until the country comes to reality about the atrocities committed in Bosnia and Croatia in reference to mass (emphasis added) killings, Serbia and its people will never integrate into the west..and will always and forever feel attached to their Russian comrades. If so, let it be!And lastly, how was it that the Europeans let this genocidal war take so many lives...Bosnia and Croatia are within half day driving of Austria. And to the end, the real culprit was the UN..for their in-action and in-decision which directly led to the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Both the Europeans and the UN must take some blame for what happened in the Balkans. Unfortunately, it took Screbencia and the murder of 8,000 men and boys to bring in the US military. Our rules of engagement which I personally had the opportunity to explain to the Serbs near Brcko was the following.."if your soldiers raise their long guns above 45 degrees, we will fire on you..if you un-holster your side arm, we will fire on you."RH/11A-05Haiti/Bosnia (Brcko)/Croatia (Vukovar, Osjiek), Nuba Mts, Sudan, SE Afghanistan, Iraq, Juba, Sudan & Uganda

Johnson-Martin, Ph.D., has been a consultant for assessment and early intervention following her retirement fromm the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she held positions in the Division for Disorders of Development and Learning and in the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center (now called the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute). Hacker, M.H.S., OTR/L, is an occupational therapist with more than 25 years of experience working with children. She holds certifications in Neurodervelopmental Therapy, Southern California Sensory Integration Tests, and Sensory Integration and Parxis Tests. She is currently the director of Emerge—A Child's Place, a pediatric clinic in Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, that provides children with occupational and speech therapy services.

However, people need to be aware that it is NOT a formal assessment tool and should be used as a guide. The great thing about the Carolina is that it is very user friendly, making it a great tool for parents to use with ease.

The manual gives you a chance to evaluate your students with special needs. Additionally, the manual follows the new trends in assessment and evaluation process through linking the assessment results with educational or intervention purposes. By using the Assessment Log and the Developmental Progress Chart, you, as a teacher, can link the ongoing assessment information with the IEP information for your students.This manual will help you understand the developmental level and deviance for your students, as well as how to plan for age appropriate and functional interventions.Thanks Amazon for the wonderful book.

Alan Balmer has done it again! Written in the same style as his previous 100 Day devotional book, Alan includes a new vocabulary word for the day, and builds a devotional around that word. It is an excellent way to learn "academically" and grow "spiritually". Leading the reader to reflect upon their personal relationship with Jesus Christ, consider His atoning sacrifice, and gently guiding into what the response to that sacrifice ought to be, this book takes the reader on a deep journey between their own heart and the Heart of the Father. One sentence in particular captured my heart and caused deep introspection regarding my own views of Jesus, “Despite all the miracles that Jesus performed, the good deeds He displayed, and the life of excellence that He lived, at the end of Jesus’ life all the soldiers saw of lasting worth were His clothes.". What a hook to the heart!! Thanks, Alan, for your heart for the Kingdom!

I liked this book for the same reason I enjoyed the 100 Day Vocabulary Word Devotional; it combines my love for words and for Bible study. Alan Balmer is gifted at writing with a strong command of Bible knowledge while remaining humble and relatable. Each day has thought-provoking questions to stimulate self-examination. The chapters are brief yet rich and engaging, perfect for a busy person's schedule. Excellent devotional for the reflective Lenten season.

With his unique way of approaching devotionals, Alan is quickly becoming one of my favorite Christian authors. As someone who is passionate about learning new words, I have very much enjoyed the opportunity to learn a new word every day that I can add to my lexicon. The bible passages listed have been very applicable to my daily challenges and celebrations.

Another inspiring book from Alan Balmer! These 40 devotionals which focus on Christ and His redeeming work caused me to dig deeper in my understanding and resulted in a greater sense of awe at the meaning of His sacrifice for us. Using his unique approach stemming from vocabulary word studies, Alan informs both mind and spirit, facilitating a meaningful devotional experience.

I recently purchased the 100 day vocabulary word devotional in paperback and love it! This is another great devotional that is a little more in depth with vocabulary, daily scripture and I really like the "Bottom Line of the Day", that sums up the whole study at the end of the daily devotion. Great devotional just in time for Easter!

This is the third book I've read by this author. I am very impressed. I have not quite finished this one yet, but I have really enjoyed it. Thanks for the inspiration and insight!

This 40 Day Lent Devotional is a great book. The scripture passages and devotions help us take a closer look at our own spiritual lives as Resurrection Day approaches and anytime. I love the wrap-up of each day's Devotion in "Bottom Line For Day" with simple application to our daily lives.

Mr. Balmer has done it again. His style of writing is both intuitive and thought provoking. The daily devotional are both practical and insightful. I encourage anyone looking for a daily reader to give this book a try. You will not be disappointed.
