Less about KLF and more about Higgs' attempt to contextualize intellectually and historically why they blew-up when they did, as well as ruminate on the relationship between the Situationists and those who play with or subscribe to Discordianism, a hilarious parody (or is it?) of organized religious belief. Frankly, I got bored with the long passages about the character of scientific inquiry, the "what if" possibilities that this or that KLF thing corresponds to some historical event, and so on. I found myself enjoying the author's personality at the same time annoyed with pages upon pages of rumination on current events and "in between moments." The biggest disappointment, for me, is the relative LACK of discussion about the music itself, the sound, the composition of the tracks, the musicians involved, and so forth. This is not a musical biography, really. Ultimately, it seemed to me as I was reading Higgs goes on tangents about the "what if" relations between R.A. Wilson and so on in order to make a book fat enough to publish. Much of the insight here could have been delivered in half the number of pages here. A good effort, but sorta boring to me.

If you know the KLF, you know what the KLF is about. I admire their methods and how they could subvert and use the established industry to fit their needs and expose pop culture. I often wonder if this could be replicated in the 21st century. I love the KLF do it yourself attitude and their ideas have had a tremendous influence. This book takes shape in the many connections, some overpowering, some unsuspected , that exist in the construction of their reality.

This book is one gigantic neuron cluster linking seemingly-disparate huge influences on my own career. So if you like me, you'll love this book. Higgs is the James Burke of music, magic and the inception of the 21st century. Holy Cow, and Wholly Chao!

Most of this book is not about the KLF but the entire book is about the KLFness of the KLF. Most of those who danced to their music in the 90s were blissfuly unaware of the influence & relationship of Robert Anton Wilson, Alan Moore, Doctor Who, JFK, and Cabaret Voltaire (the art movement, not the band) to the music we danced to. JMR Higgs takes the reader on a path of connections explaining the KLFness rather than merely documenting studio events. His understanding of certain aspects of religious philosophy and economy seems a bit forced into the narrative but this can be forgiven and does not reduce this from being a 5 star book.

I enjoyed this book and found it valuable in my continuing understanding. For me, an American discordian born in 1977, it really tied up a lot of loose ends. I love RAW, and Ken Campbell's reading of Illuminatus! amazes me every time. I've also followed the KLF since the nineties. I knew little of Dr. Who, so didn't fully realize the significance. I recommend this book to everyone interested in these matters. PS Nothing is true, everything is permissible.

I like this but I can't say it's for everybody. Are you a person who likes weird stuff, but is skeptical who likes rave bands from the late eighties and likes conspiracy theories just for entertainment value. Do you like Tammy Wynette? Do you like philosophical systems that seek to undermine philosophical systems by masquerading as philosophical systems? These are some of the questions you should ask before reading this. Do you like Dr. Who? Dadaism? If so then I think you will enjoy this bit of history(?). I think it captures a moment in a way-late eighties/early nineties- that was a transitional period. To what? From what? Note sure. Is what it is. The book is a fun read. Not sure it is more than that but it might lead to other things?

KLF are probably the only musicians/band in the history of modern music that did not sell out. Their story is truly original, their ways are ways of madness and they sure as hell had some serious fun along the way. It's clear why they are underrated, why more people didn't hear about them. The story of KLF's success and subsequent disappearance from the music scene is intense and unlike any other band's story. Highly recommended if you're into weirdness, originality and sheer madness.

Nothing I can say in this review will do justice to this extraordinary, thought-provoking, funny, fascinating book. Despite previously considering myself to be someone who "knew about" the JAMS, nothing could have prepared me for the experience of reading this. The closest I've ever come to feeling as mentally exercised and excited after reading a non-fiction book was after completing Godel, Escher, Bach; which whilst thought provoking in the extreme, never produced as many out-loud laughs on the bus to work as this.Whether you're a fan of the JAMS or if you've never heard of them before, this book will take you to some very odd places and introduce you to some fascinating history and ideas. A thread is sewn between JFK, Dr Who, Chaos, Money, Alan Moore, Ken Campbell, Tammy Wynette, Life, The Universe and Everything fnord; we even get to understand why two men would burn a million pounds on the Isle of Jura. Sort of.
