Love this book! The recipes are easy to follow and delicious, and the stories she Jackie writes about her childhood make this cookbook a fun read. Takes me back to listening to my family tell stories of their upbringing in the South. I would highly recommend this book to any true southerner, or anyone that is fascinated with Southern traditions. I will be buying this book for Christmas gifts this year.

You wouldn't think there would be that many different ways to make biscuits, but this book will quickly show you how wrong you are. It is full of great, and innovative recipes, most of which can be customized to your taste. Ever thought of making broccoli biscuits? Or how about chocolate chip biscuits? If you are a biscuit-lover, this book will open a whole new world for you. And all the recipes are very easy to follow. You'll be cranking out world-class biscuits like a pro in no time at all. I can't recommend this book enough....

Guys: Self-rising flour. My first attempt in this cookbook was a total flop because I didn't read the recipe carefully enough. I tried the biscuits again today and they were amazing. And more--when the first batch failed, I emailed the author, and it was communicating with her that brought out my error. How much better does it get?

While I haven't tried all recipes for either the biscuits, or the gravies/extras, there is plenty of solid, quick recipes that I would recommend this book (even if the others don't turn out as good as the recipes look).

I made biscuits for the first time in years (I had not been very successful before) following the instructions in this book, and they came out fabulous. I gave some to my neighbor, and she called me after eating one to say she thought she'd died and gone to heaven.

I haven't tried all of them but the ones I have tried were very good. You will enjoy baking and eating when you want them.☺

These volumes are excellent for those who are beyond beginner status but not yet "grizzled" expert. In other words, one who is comfortable with buying grade "A" leather and making the sheaths with little waste. Likewise, I would not recommend for the beginner unless one is adept at tooling, dyeing, cutting, skiving, sewing, template usage, pattern making,etc.Knowledge of tools and techniques are essential in making the sheaths. For instance, the first project, The Mexican Loop Sheath, is somewhat complex. 29 materials and 24 tools are necessary for the project- although veteran leathercrafters probably might use fewer materials and tools depending on the level of expertise. However, I would take seriously the ability to use the plastic templates for measuring and drawing, as well as having elementary arithmatic skills. As metal and woodworkers know, correct measurements count. Leathercrafting is no exception. And every leathercrafter beyond the beginner level knows, a slight mm or inch off makes quite a difference in the project's finished appearance. But eventually when one feels comfortable using tools as an extension of one's hand, project's like this become less complex, and quite enjoyable. I love making sheaths because I love the huge variety of knives available. And if one is or decides to become a knife maker, making sheaths is an added benefit. Actually, it can become quite a lucrative enterprise, such as making custom sheaths for COS players, outdoorsman, collectors- and of course repairing sheaths is a viable side business itself. The best part of these volumes are the photo-illustrations, presented as one is walked through each project; and the respect the authors give to the readers by not becoming needlessly or overly "wordy", but staying within the technical parameters of using jargon and terms understood by the average knowledgeable leathercrafter. I'm looking forward to Volume 4. These books are very leathercrafter-friendly, and I'd recommend all volumes as an addition to your library as a fast and valuable resource. Enjoy and happy leathercrafting !.

John R. Ehrenfeld takes an ambitious, difficult path to move the reader's mindset from the current, consumer-crazed culture to the necessary mental model - the post-consumer-crazed, sustainability mindset.This is a necessary book for those truly interested in "true sustainability." The major use of the term sustainability in today's culture refers to incremental changes made by corporations to make their products, processes and services less wasteful (doing good) while also saving money and earning additional revenue (doing well). But incremental changes by companies, while necessary (to buy time) is insufficient if the consumer mindset is not also changed. Our current mindset or mental model drives growth, the true underlying problem behind sustainability. Technology changes make short-run positive benefits, but as every system dynamics modeler knows, without tackling the underlying problem of growth such technology changes merely enable growth to proceed further. To the extent that people believe "the hype behind going green" then the current sustainability initiatives by companies can actually make the problem worse, ... by diverting attention away from the necessary changes required in our own consuming and cultural behavior. Ehrenfeld lays out the deep intellectual basis for our future sustainability mindset. So, if you are not "up to" deep reflecting on our current culture, if you want a quick fix or the 5-steps your company can take now to be more profitable then don't buy this book. On the other hand, if you are searching for answers and want to have a better understanding of the true problem then this book should be a part of your collection. In fact, Ehrenfeld also goes a step further and supplies a path to change through the enhanced design of products (and institutional design issues). Both the underpinning of the current consumer mindset and the new path are well researched with a rich set of references. In summary, this is not your typical sustainability book. But, it will be found on the bookshelves of all of the critical thinkers who will help move sustainability forward.

I have to say that i read Fromm's "To have or to be" before reading this book and i feel like it really helped. Ehrenfeld builds on the Frankfurt school to create a theory that offers both an explanation and an out of the current situation. Flourishing is a concept tailored for design for sustainability and approaching sustainability through flourishing offers a lot of interesting insights.

This should be a "must read" for Americans. We talk "Green", we use the word "sustainable" but do we indeed know what it really means? If you read the ads for Black Friday, as it is the day after Thanksgiving as I write this review, even the oblivious can see that consumerism drives our world, both culturally and financially. The author does a respectable job of conveying this message. I have not finished the book as of yet, but am impressed by the thought that went into this and the research that was done. Fine job!

Ehrenfeld offers a compelling arguement that the post enlightenment orinetation of moderntiy toward "having" as opposed to "being" has not only metaphisical implications for the existence of humaninty but, also implies that unless their is a major shift in values toward an orientation toward "being" there will be little progress in achieving an ideal form of sustainability where there is a flourishing of the ecosystems of which human co-inhabit. He explains that the predomenant approaches toward sustainable development, that are in effect only efforts to make marginal reductions in the effects of growth and development based on consuming and "having" more material things, will not help us achieve a state of sustainability that will save us from the negative effects of climate change.

This is a good book. It can be a little pessimistic, especially in the first chapters, but I assume the current conditions are anything but optimistic, so the tone of the book is understandable...
