Why Isn't this book available anymore? I queried books on finger cymbals, and it was not listed. I could only find it among my purchases.Be that as it may, this book is excellent. I have been dancing and playing finger cymbals (zills) for 44 years, teaching both, for 42 of those years. This book is the best I have found. It is great for the musician and non-musician, alike. It contains many photos illustrating the hand positions when playing zills. It explores the many sounds which zills can make. Musical time signatures are explained, for the non-musician. There is a glossary of Arabic terms. For the next edition of this book, I would suggest that the photos of hands with zills, be larger. There is ample room on the pages to have larger photos, with greater detail. Secondly, the resources need to be updated, as some are no longer available.

An insperational and original work on the voice of the cymbal. An education worth the price of the book! As a musician,a dancer, an artist, and a human searching for expression, I was inspired. Thanks Jenna, It would take us a lifetime to learn everything you put together. I'm glad you shared what you have learned on your journey! ~HazeL

Very useful. LOTS of drills and detailed variations.

The Dancing Cymbalist is a wonderful book! Its loaded with photographs that are very helpful in learning to play the zills. Jenna Woods is incredibly knowledgeable and she has included a lot of extras that would even aid to drummers as well as dancers! Some of the Chapters included are...Understanding musical time...Learning rhythms...How to practice music and dance at the same time...Coordinating movement with zillwork...Coordinating arm movement with zillwork...Improvisation and Zill choices (to name a few). She even includes a brief history of zills, which i found very interesting and fun.It truly is a beautiful book, and i would recommend this book to anyone serious about their dancing...and even those just interested in dance itself! :)~Namaste

The Dancing Cymbalist is surely the most comprehensive book yet written on the art of playing finger cymbals and dancing. It ranges from profound details of musical rhythmic practice that any percussionist would find helpful, to a body-wise system to create healthy playing and moving, to inspirational words and ideas that spark the magic of the creative mind and motivate play and fun. After working with this book, I have already noticed a difference both in my playing and in my dancing, not just in the realm of finger cymbals and middle eastern dance, but in all the professional music and dance endevors that are my livelihood and passion. Thank you, Jenna! -Meagan

Jenna's book covers all the bases, including one that is close to my heart--zil playing for meditation. I recommend this wonderful book to a wide range of students: those who want a strong foundation, those who want to hone skills, and those who want to discover new ways to explore their playing. Excellent resource!
