Another installment in this series, this plot seemed a bit less zany and a bit predictable. While it introduces some new American characters, they seem more like stereotypes and less like the hilarious eccentrics who populate the rest of the series.

Like all of the books in this series, the plot was not deep and multi-layered, unless I missed it (It was British, you know). But it was a fun read, and I hope the author keeps writing his humorous British stories.

There were times when the first four books got a little tedious interspersed with Some smiles and laughs. This one isn't tedious. The people and images are zany enough to amuse most of the time.

As always, I enjoyed this book. A good ,story and a quick read. I recommend all his Lost books!

I made the mistake of buying this a second time. Still no good.Edmcc2

I like the free and easy way that Mathews writes. He is funny, lighthearted, and clean!

Paul Mathews writes light British humor – which I define as “understated hyperbolic silliness.” His books won’t help you find the deeper meaning of life nor improve your interpersonal relationships. They might increase your vocabulary a bit. They certainly do provide several hours of smiles and relaxation. I like to read a few chapters before bed – this puts me in a good mood. This is the fifth of Mathews’ We Have Lost . . . series. (We Have Lost the President; the Pelicans; the Coffee; and the Chihuahuas.) While it is quite readable as a stand-alone, you will enjoy the humor and the characters much more after having read at least the first book. The books don’t cost much and they are quick reads, so the investment is well worth it. The We Have Lost stories take place in the 2040’s and there have been a few changes. The British overthrew their monarchy in theRevolution of 2029 and are now the British Republic. The Royals have been exiled to Florida, in the New States of America. The New States’ northern neighbor is now The Peoples Democratic Republic of Canada. Technology hasn’t changed much, though. It is still annoying, ill-tempered and disrespectful. The stories revolve around Howie Pond, Presidential Spokesperson, and his wife Britt, a secret agent for the National Security and Intelligence Service (NSIS’s main activity seems to be foiling plots by Royalists to return the monarchy to power). In previous books, Howie had been occasionally, and involuntarily, recruited as a temporary secret agent (“The name’s Pond. Howie Pond.”) while Britt was then his fiancée and an investigative newspaper reporter. The basic premise of the books is that something of national importance has gone missing. (Yes, I know, pelicans?) Howie and Britt are separately tasked to solve the problem and spend much of the time bumbling toward the solution without realizing that they are both involved in the investigation. In We Have Lost the Plot, set in 2046, the inaugural Film Association of Britain (FAB) awards show is about to be presented at Buckingham Palace. The government has gone to great lengths to make this the most prestigious awards show ever, even using Big Ben in the presentation. NSIS has received scant information (it may involve an escalope or maybe an antelope) that there may be a plot to disrupt the show, humiliating the Republic. Britt is assigned to foil the plot, if there is one, to stop the plotters, if there are any, and save the prestige of the Republic, which is questionable in any event. Meanwhile, President Zayn Winner, himself a former B-list (or maybe C-list) movie star, has written a screenplay, hoping it will propel him to Hollywood glory once again, as soon as he can get out of being president. While he is schmoozing an assortment of Hollywood film types in town for the FAB awards, the plot notes for the screenplay go missing. It’s a disaster, because Zayn has based his characters on world leaders he has met and hasn’t yet even changed their names. Howie must find the notes, partly because, if the notes go public. the embarrassment to the British Republic will be enormous. But mostly, as Presidential Spokesperson, he doesn’t want to spend the next several months answering questions about this diplomatic calamity. What follows, as Britt tries to foil a plot and Howie tries to find a plot, is a sequence of silly situations and encounters with off-the-wall characters that will entertain anyone with even a modest affection for British humor. The list of oddities is too long to recount but includes Hollywood directors, has-been and wanna-be actors, PR gurus, politicians, secret agents, eccentric receptionists, posh photocopy clerks, etc. I give the book five stars. I suppose I wouldn’t if I were comparing it to great, or even very good, literature. But it is well written and, as a chance to escape the dreary world of 2018 and land in 2046, where a muffin can be a motivational force, it’s hard to beat.

We Have Lost the Plot Paul MathewsWell, Howie and Britt Pond, President Zayn and Electra Winner are back once again! This time it’s a Hollywood extravaganza as the first ever FAB awards are presented along with all the things that go along with Hollywood. You know, the Actors and Actresses, Producers, Agencies etc. Then Zayn tells Howie he had written a script that kind of dissed a few of the countries leaders. The only problem is…..he seems to have lost it somewhere in his drinking and schmoozing during the night along with not coming home.So between Electra ready to kill her husband, and Howie trying to get Zayn to remember where he put the script, Britt’s by herself in the NSIS told to make sure no one is going to sabotage the FABs. Meanwhile, we all lose the plot between the bunch of them! You never quite know whats going on, but that's a good thing and honestly makes it even funnier.Mr. Mathews has a knack for creating characters that stick with you. They’re colorful, have huge personalities and are painted with aplomb. Descriptions are marvelous and you can just see them! This book is no different in that aspect. And of course both Howie and Britt are after the same thing, they just don’t know it!Enjoy! it’s a fun, laugh out loud book that you won’t want to put down!
