Review

Beverly Donofrio portrays a world of babies having babies and children raising children. She acknowledges right away that she's not a conventional mother, that she and her son Jason don't have a traditional home life. She was seventeen when Jason was born and they spent eight of the next ten years on welfare. A spunky, spirited woman with a defiant streak, she wages a constant struggle with herself: is Jason an anchor pulling her down or does he provide ballast? At times he seems to grow in spite of her. Her love for him isn't in question, but will she ever be able to comprehend his needs? Motherhood is never easy, but hers was made more difficult by a society ready to cast judgment on young, single mothers, by a family who finds it easier to criticize than support her, and her own struggle to reach a long held dream of a college education. As Beverly's sense of self increases and she realizes her goals, Jason challenges and contributes to her understanding of life and their growth together. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Holly Smith

If you enjoyed the movie, the book is even more interesting bc it tells the full truthful story of Beverly Donofrio. After reading the first pages it seems Beverly isn't the sweet naive girl DrewBarrymore portrays on screen. As young as 12 years old, she's already made up her mind to squeeze everything she can into her young life. From smoking and underage drinking tolosing her virginity in the back seat of a car at fourteen to a boy she's only known a few short hours. The thing I liked most was that she tells the unvarnished truth unlike the sugar coated movie version. Everything from her drug use and promiscuity, to her blatant disregard and resentment of her son.Through out the book, instead of feeling bad for her circumstances, you wishshe would stop blaming everyone and thing especially her son, for her lifestyle choices. The beginning starts outinteresting and flows nicely without unimportant details and pauses to theflow. A very enjoyable and eye openingread.

Being a mother, especially a single mother is never easy and it doesn't come with how to guide. Beverly Donofrio beautifully writes her memoir about the struggles of life while raising her son not only as a teenage mother but a single mother. The book is more in depth than the movie ever was, I was truly able to feel and understand her struggles, heart ache, and joy on a personal level. And I fell in love with this book and will recommend it to all my friends and family who love books. I've got my husband started reading this book, that's how amazing it is, well done.

While I did like this book, I was disappointed in how short it was! My feelings may have been because of seeing the movie first. The movie was so unlike the book and that's understandable, they are usually different. I recommend reading the book first.

I grew up in Wallingford, CT so I can totally related to the story. My brother was a character in the book. It is a good read, especially if you grew up in the area. The author was definitely a wild child as were many of us who would hang out under a weeping willow tree.

I have always loved the movie and wanted to read the book. The book is a little different than the movie but you know it's true. Just wish it had been a little longer...i enjoyed it.

Very funny novel, as well as eyeopening. Glad I read it, Beverly Donofrio seems like a lovely person to have a conversation with about life. Unlike others I've never seen the movie so I went in blind reading this, but it was great. Touching and real.

saw the movie several times and happy with the book even tho I am sure the movie was dramatized but it was a good read

Great story. I wish I could find the movie somewhere cheaper though. On Amazon it's like $30-35. I'll find it though. I purchased the Kindle version.
