It’s good to have information on growing tea, if one is foolish enough to try it. (I Am That Fool!) However, this Book doesn’t give a lot of data in that respect. I had to comb over it to or three times to even find the scant, 3 or so, heavily illustrated pages dedicated to the topic.I suppose it does help, and will lead me in the right direction, but I was hoping for much, much more.And thus I am disappointed.But there doesn’t appear to be anything else on the market, so if you really have no idea, it is A BIT helpful.

If you love tea YOU HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK. This is the most essential book for anyone who loves to drink, make, gift, and create teas. Whether you're just having a drink of tea with friends, making a pot for a few family members, giving a gift of tea to loved ones, or trying to think of a new blend to come up with, you need this book. The amount of information it has on things to use in teas as well as the actual cultivating of the camellia sinensis plant itself is just amazing. It's a great read, keeps it interesting by giving facts about the seeds, fruits, leaves, herbs, roots, and tubers you can use to make teas. And it explains the differences between green teas and blacks and tips on how to properly brew teas. It's very informative.

good book but it would have been nice if the hardiness zones were included. you read about a plant think ohh i want that one then research it on the net just to find out you cant plant it.

I am not quite sure why i am so interested in teas/tisanes/decotions/infusions, i don't drink hot drinks. Though several do make excellant sodas, which i do enjoy regularly. I have always liked the idea of "teas". While it is not a weighty tome of botanical insight there is a certain pleasure to seeing such a list of plants as is discussed here. The book covers many different possibilities, most are common, some not so common. My main complaint against the book is the total lack of growing zones being mentioned in the "to grow" section of each plant. It is an oversight that is hard to understand as it is such basic necessary information on how to grow a plant. Otherwise it is an enjoyable book.

A very interesting read. It has tons of information on the different plants you may use for making tea and different methods as well. It explains everything in detail. Definitely a book to get for any tea lover. I got this book because I want to start making my own tea bags without all the chemicals that may be sprayed on commercial teas. This book gives me enough background knowledge to get started.

A good book for someone interested in trying to grow their own tea. It may not be as comprehensive as some other reviewers have indicated, but it is a very good starting point for someone new to growing tea.

Just what I was looking for! I am a beginner when it comes to tea, and this book makes it so simple. Though I'm sure the actual process will be a lot harder, I still can't wait to get started!

I would give five stars for the content, but I have to take off one star for the poor quality of the printing. My friend owns a pirate version of this book, which cost him only a few bucks for printing out the pdf. Guess what, the copyright book I spent over 100 bucks on looks like a photocopy of the pirate one. For example, most of the i's and j's in the equations are printed without those dots above them, which is a real pain when I'm reading it.

I first encountered this textbook when I used it to study for the analysis prelim at UT the summer after my first year of graduate school. I had been studying Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis during the semester, and while Rudin is elegant and beautiful, this book is far more comprehensive and, most importantly to me, systematic. From the very beginning, Folland develops the theory of Borel measures on the real line in generality (whereas Rudin's "construction" of Lebesgue measure based on the Riemann integral is, in my opinion, incomprehensible). The treatment of general measure theory in this book is worth the purchase price on it's own, but Folland includes lots of material going well beyond the standard course on measure theory and integration. The most valuable chapters non-measure-theoretic chapters for me are the ones covering point set topology and the rudiments of functional analysis (Hilbert and Banach spaces, and a little bit about general topological vector spaces, but not much).Graduate school is now behind me, but Folland's book continues to be my favorite reference for analysis and even point set topology. Admittedly I have not looked for analysis books in many years, but that's because Folland has met all my needs (in the interest of full disclosure I should say I'm a number theorist, not an analyst, but for what I do a good knowledge of analysis is essential).If you're interested in the book to supplement a course in measure theory and abstract real analysis, or for self-study, I would say that the only background knowledge is the material in a standard undergraduate introduction to real analysis (perhaps sticking to metric space topology and treating Riemann integration rigorously). More important for reading the book is a capacity to understand and appreciate abstraction, and a reasonable level of mathematical maturity. I took an undergraduate course in general topology (using Munkres) which covered the material in Folland (most of it anyway) over the course of a semester, and I think this did more to prepare me for Folland (and advanced mathematics in general) than any other course I took. If you are comfortable reading and writing proofs (general topology being an excellent subject with which to cultivate these skills), then I think you will enjoy and learn a great deal from Folland's book.

While trying to review and strengthen my foundations in measure theory and integration, I found this book.It is tough reading to be sure, but it is easier to work through than Papa Rudin, and feels more "up to date" than Rudin.I like Folland because he does not waste undue time developing the basics of measures. He sprints right through those (Chapters 1,2, and 3) and into Point-Set Topology in Chapter 4. I really enjoyed that chapter, since he goes into the applications to analysis (mostly locally compact Hausdorff spaces) pretty thoroughly. To compare with Royden (3rd edition), you have to wait until 2/3 of the way through to get to this point. By Chapter 5, you are ready for Functional Analysis, which is what I am teaching myself now. (I chickened out of Functional Analysis in grad school, and this has bothered me ever since!)I will have to edit this review once I have gone through the rest of the book. Unlike 3rd edition Royden (I haven't seen the 4th edition, so I can't comment on that), by the time you finish Folland it appears that you will be ready for research in various branches of math that depend heavily on analysis.Therefore, I would have to highly recommend this book. Just consult a more "basic" reference for your first look at measure theory. Jump into this book for a broader view of things.

The Folland book is, by far, my favorite book on the subject. The exposition is extremely clean and concise (perhaps "dense" would be a better word). The text requires a little bit of work on the reader's part (some small gaps to fill), aside from the exercises (which is a good thing, in my opinion, for a text at the graduate level). It contains a very hefty amount of mathematics, as it functions as an introduction to Measure Theory/Integration, Topology, Functional Analysis, and Fourier Analysis.Comparing with other books:Rudin's "Real and Complex Analysis" isn't quite as comprehensive, regarding real variable theory. Also, the exercises in Rudin aren't quite as gentle.The Royden, Wheeden/Zygmund, Stein/Shakarchi, and Kolmogorov/Fomin books are far less substantial, as texts and references.I recommend the Folland book, though the Rudin book is good to have. Also, Donald Cohn's "Measure Theory" makes a great supplementary text, along with the Folland book. If not Folland, then try Cohn.EDIT: 12/04/2015There are many other great books on "Real Variables." Let's face it: A one-year course in Real Variables, using this text, may cover only half of the book, leaving out much of the supplementary material on Harmonic Analysis/PDE's; and if a course does have time for some of the supplementary material, it might be preferable to go in a different direction (depending on the audience). For instance, the supplementary topics in Cohn's book include Polish spaces (and some of the beginnings of descriptive set theory), as well as the Bochner integral (none of which is included in Folland's text [for the exception of an exercise on vector-valued integration]). If you look at Halmos' Measure Theory or at the 3rd Edition of Royden, you'll find some very important and technical aspects of mappings between measure spaces which aren't in Folland's text. In Volume I of Dunford & Schwartz, you'll find the theory for finitely additive set functions, in general, as well as discussions of function spaces and spaces of measures (as Banach spaces).

I'm a good new York Italian style cook to begin with but I looked forward to receiving this cookbook and trying the recipes from the famous NY eatery. As I leafed thru the pages I noted the recipes seem fairly mundane. I decided to try the meatball recipe as it depicted a difference from the way I make meatballs. The recipe calls for adding plain breadcrumbs instead of seasoned and up to two cups of water to the mixture a quarter cup at a time as the final step before shaping in to balls. My fear that adding water to the mixture would result in a loose meatball without flavor was confirmed. After cooking I added the meatballs to my sauce. They disintegrated after 10 minutes of simmering. The book relies too much on remembrance story telling. Lots of other Italian cookbooks provide better recipes. I recommend taking a pass.

If you like Italian food and enjoy cooking, these are the books to own. Rao's recipes are easy to understand and consist of easily-obtainable ingredients. The directions are very clear and written to be understood by the home cook.

Great history, easy to use recipes...delicious food. I am gluten intolerant so just adjust a few things if needed.

If for no other reason....5 stars for the Radicchio Lump Crabmeat Cocktail.

“Proof” is an outstanding book. Neither too short nor too long for its topic, it crisply discusses various elements of the production of (ingestible) alcohol. The author, Adam Rogers, an editor at Wired magazine, writes in a compelling, engaging fashion, including enough science to be interesting and not superficial, without putting in so much science that the average reader gets bored.Rogers discusses in turn every major element of the process. First, he covers yeasts, ranging over their history in the happenstance production of alcohol, through the modern production of specialized yeasts for different processes. Then he discusses sugars, the raw material on which yeasts act, and then fermentation—the process of yeasts acting on sugar. This sounds very technical, and parts of it are. But Rogers manages to smoothly intersperse simplified scientific discussions with anecdotes and conversations with individuals tied to each topic of interest. It all fits together quite well.“Proof” then moves on to secondary steps in alcohol production: distillation and aging. Rogers ends with ancillary topics: the mostly subjective area of smell and taste, and then the objective, but poorly understood, area of the effect of alcohol on the human body and brain. Finally, Rogers caps off the book with a discussion of hangovers.Perhaps controversially, Rogers implies that he believes two heresies: that all vodka is the same and therefore perceived taste differences in vodka are delusional, and that much wine appreciation is similarly delusional. As to vodka, I have no idea, although a liquor company executive once told me the same thing and blind taste tests tend to prove delusion as well. Rogers faintly contemptuously points out that vodka has no congeners and is merely pure alcohol, and that while “die-hard vodka drinkers believe that the purest vodkas really do differ in flavor, on its face, that claim doesn’t make sense.” He notes that “one hypothesis for why they don’t says that [water] forms crystalline molecular cages called clathrates, trapping ethanol inside. . . . . [but] it’s not like there are taste buds for hydrogen bond strength.” He never quite comes out and says that perceived vodka differences are fantasy, though.As to wine, Rogers seems to believe, with long discussion, that most wine perception is purely subjective, although with training, experts can sometimes use the same language to describe the same wines—but they are likely perceiving things differently, even though they are using the same language, and nearly all perceptions of relative quality are purely subjective, both to the person and the situation. Yes, an expert can identify a specific wine—but only one that he is familiar with, in most cases. His own description of an unfamiliar wine will usually vary from the descriptions of others, even when supposedly using a common vocabulary. Rogers notes studies that wine tasters who are given white wines to taste, then the same wine colored red, report wildly different tastes, appropriate for red wines, for the colored white wines. Rogers notes studies that show that no human can actually distinguish more than four flavors or smells blended together, in wine or anything else. He implies that he believes that people like Robert Parker “are essentially making it all up. Or, like some storefront psychics, possibly they think they know what they’re talking about, when in actuality they’ve merely intuited their way into a con.” So this book may enrage the haute vodka or wine drinker.For the book as a whole, its net effect is something like watching “Modern Marvels” or “How It’s Made,” but in print and in more detail. Of course, if you hate shows like those, you won’t like this book. But if you do, you’ll love this book.

An OK read, I did mange to finish it. too much of the author in the book - where he is at, who he is taking to, how he got drunk as a skunk with friends to test hang-over cures. Not a whole lot of science, and it's watered down. I read a lot of non-fiction, I just don't like the chatty stuff in this book - lots of it is just page filler, chewing gum for the eyes. A much better book on 'booze' is "Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol" by Iain Gately.

While this is touted as a scientific text, it really is far more of a disjointed history of the science of booze. I was totally amused at the end when the writer talks about his editor not wanting a history book, but that he couldn't write what he wanted without historical context. This is an enjoyable romp through alcohol from start to finish, covering many topics - often well intertwined topics. It's organization is sparse, jumping back and forth between subjects sometimes seemingly at random, and it is filled with technical buzzwords. Often the author will have a whole paragraph of synonymous terms for something - not really necessary for a lay text, and while it sounds very CSI sciency, it really doesn't enhance the delivery or information conveyed.There is a lot of solid research and interesting material in here. Making it more condensed would have conveyed that information much more clearly, but would probably have upset the people who want page count. There are many anecdotes from personal interviews, some relevant, some not. The author's need to go into descriptions about the interviewee's dog or similar nonsense is sometimes distracting, but sometimes does help to add flavor to the cocktail. A lot of work went into the glossary and index.Overall, it's a fun book. It's not a science book. You'll get fun facts for use at your next trivia party, but not really much science out of this.I'm really glad I got the low cost Kindle edition. It was well worth $3, but would have been very disappointing at hardcover prices.

About the Author

Kasia Ehrhardt works and lives in Berlin, Germany with her boyfriend, daughter, and cat. She designs sewing patterns and writes tutorials for the DIY Sewing Academy.
