As a person who has suffered with ADD all my life, I was disappointed with the standard advice. It does not matter what the problem is, the standard advice always applies. There is nothing specific to ADD, but what do I know.
This is by far the worst edited book I have ever come across. It went back ASAP. The author uses voice recognition software, but apparently doesn't edit it to see if the words and grammar are correct. Within paragraphs, ideas are randomly presented and sentence structure, which is more like speaking than writing, make it extremely difficult to glean any useful information. I am extremely disappointed in Amazon for selling such a poor quality book. Don't they at least make sure the book is readable before selling? I now wonder about the quality of other Amazon products. Don't waste your time.
As another reviewer said, this book is horribly edited. The first reference given on the FIRST page of the first chapter is incorrectly listed. Really? You don't even have to read that far to find errors. Look at the back cover and you'll find this gem, "Did you away from high school [sic] ..." I wonder if anyone actually read it before they printed it. It only cost me $15 but it is going back ASAP.
This book has really helped me understand an ADD/ ADHD Brain and why it works differently than a "Norma;" brain. It has been very enlightening to say the least. The book was delivered in great condition.
I have read both versions of "The Stimulus Driven Brain" and "Eating for Cognitive Performance" and must say George Glade has developed two very helpful books full of helpful tools to cope and understand ADD/ADHD. I am now 27 years old and 2 years ago I graduated with honors from The University of Washington. I struggled through High School and half of Community College until I discovered I had ADD/ADHD. After being properly diagnosed I used many of the techniques described in this book, resulting in improved study techniques and resulting in much higher test scores. This is a must read for college students and people that want to understand how the ADD brain works and how to make the best out of the different chemistry in our ADD/ADHD thinking brains. I highly recommend this book.
The newest version of this guide contains practical advice on the feeding your brain that everyone should pause to consider - are you consuming sufficient protein, water, Vitamin B, and Omega-3s to produce an ample supply of neurotransmitters? I recently participated in a workshop on epilepsy and the brain, where I learned that many patients with drug-resistant seizure activity can be treated with a ketogenic diet. This high protein diet controls symptoms in over 60% of patients, and speaks to the sensitivity of our brains to blood sugar, pH, and the availability of the precursors to neurotransmitter production. Since reading this latest edition of Dr. Glade's Essential Guide, I have taken to carrying protein bars with me everywhere I go, and at the first thought of hunger (or every 3 hours, whichever comes first), I consume half a bar with 12 oz of water. The benefits have been fantastic - not only do I remain alert and focused all day, but I find that I am experiencing unintended (but welcome) weight loss and a heightened sense of emotional stability. With all the building blocks in place, I make better decisions, I feel consistent, and my performance is optimal. The advice in the rest of the book is also incredibly spot on. I teach in a college environment where many student are currently being treated for (or perhaps would benefit from being treated for) ADD behaviors. Those who are being treated have greatly appreciated the book and the strategies for success; those who are not being treated see how these strategies benefit them, and endeavor to apply the advice to improve their success, with or without the label. Educators - please take a read and consider how you might introduce some of these strategies as being for ALL brains, and I think we will do a world of good for all students. I was diagnosed with ADD my first quarter in college. My grades in school were fine so no one thought I had ADD prior to this. I wanted answers and tools to deal with it. I read many books. It was hard to find a middle ground. They were either too technical to understand or personal memoirs that I couldn't relate to. Then I read this one. This book provided a thorough explanation of ADD/ADHD in a way that made sense and gave me the tools I needed to move forward.After following the techniques in the book I noticed a big change. My anxiety went down, my depression lifted, my grades went up and most importantly I gained control of my life. I can enjoy my classes now and am able to focus at a level essential for success in college. It was the key to a puzzle I couldn't figure out.I learned that the author, George Glade, has a show "Host of The Stimulus Driven Brain" on webtalkradio.net. It has been a great companion to the book. Knowing that the author is a true professional who has focused on the ADD/ADHD issue for over a decade makes me feel confident in how I am dealing with my ADD. I know that I am getting the best current information on the subject.While there are many books out there on the ADD/ADHD this one has proven to be the most useful. It's not just for ADD/ADHD college students. The book is useful to parents, friends and any student regardless if they are ADD/ADHD.This book is an amazing resource for anyone.
